'10 JUCO QB Cameron Newton

I haven't seen anyone say Newton or Simms for that matter is going to be a Savior. But I think it is clearly the best option we have....

From your post I guess you feel like we aren't going to win many games next year?

7-9 wins. Tennessee is going to be rebuilding the OL and they lose Dan Williams who is a huge part of the D. The schedule next season is brutal.

What is a normal JUCO prospect then? For every Josh Huepel there are a hundred Brent Schaeffers.

I'm not saying they suck, but a QB is a long term investment. A guy with two years of eligibility is not someone you are going to invest much time in.

I don't give a damn about stars. They're irrelevant once the game starts.

All of this back and forth about relative merits of a JV QB made me stop and think, let's stop comparing apples and oranges. How many 5 star QBs have been available as JVs and how have they done in their Jr/Sr years? Looking at Rivals back through 2002, the list looks like this:

Cam Newton

So I would surmise Mr. Newton presents a unique opportunity. All past precedents need not apply. Our coaches will still make a decision based on his perceived ability to run the pro style offense.

I am sure the irrelevancy of stars would be news to the recruiting coordinators of all the major NCAA programs that are all recruiting the same 4-star and 5-star kids. Yeah, measurables aren't everything, but they are something.

Exactly. You can't compare Newton to any other Juco QB I have seen. His talent is obvious. I don't know if it translates to success at UT. I don't think anyone does. But to lump him in with all other Juco's is a very narrow point of view.

I also think people are assuming if he signs a Juco Kiffin is expecting that kid to start. Which is what I thought as well but the more I hear people talk about Kiffin liking Simms more the more I believe Stephens is going to be the QB in 2010.

What? Check out Sam Bradford and Vince Young. Both lost one game as redshirt sophomores. They could have left had they wanted to but both decided to stay for their junior seasons. You think Texas and Oklahoma were wasting their time had they only gotten two years out of them? I'll spend two years on a quarterback if he'll lead my team to a 12-1 record. That's just me though.

because...

  • Slow twitch muscle fibers
  • No fluidity of the hips
  • Stiff upper body when running
  • He's an athlete playing QB, not a QB that is an athlete
  • Kind of player that is a "coach killer," will never live up to his hype, a la Jeff Luc
  • He has a hitch in his throwing motion
  • He is a thug
Don't doubt me. I went to the Sab school of talent scouting.

Sounds like Tebow minus the thug. Does being a Christian really change that much though? Hard to say. If so then Newton should become a born again Christian. Voila... he will have all the traits Tebow has.

All of your points are opinionated and hold no validity.

If he's a redshirt sophomore he's had three years in the system.

Plus neither of those were JUCOs. Try again.

+1. Simms would represent another guy on the depth chart, much like Lamaison (although I still think NL has enough potential to surprise a lot of folks)...whereas Cam would only be brought in for one thing...the expectation to win the starting job and help get CLK's wins sooner rather than later.

I think Bray can very well make a solid bid for the starting job, but there would be more growing pains involved than leaning on Newton, IMHO.
Newton is a slightly used Lexus, whereas M. Simms is a Chevey Lumina, if you will.

You would think that a Lexus wouldn't have to steal a laptop.

Newton is currently a JUCO because he left Florida. You act like he is currently a JUCO because he was a bad player coming out of high school. You don't get ranked five stars and a scholarship from Florida if you're bad. If you think having that extra year learning the system was the case then what's your excuse about Sam Bradford as a rs freshman in comparison to Newton?

Bradford(RS FR) completed 69.5% of his passes for 3,121yds 38tds 8ints and was sacked only 12 times. Oklahoma finished 11-3.

So... try again?

Pearl You think they offer him? If so I think he comes here.

I bet he would absolutely jump on the offer and commit. He'd get to play in the SEC and against his old school, plus we would be the biggest program to offer him;

Here are his offers:

Arizona
Kansas State
Mississippi State

For the Matt Simms vs Cam Newton debate I want the staff to make the conclusion and offer the one they feel will get us the most wins next season if they start.

You do get kicked out of UF if you steal a laptop though.

I have yet to see what Sam Bradford has to do with JUCO QBs generally sucking when they get to a big time school.

Let me type really slow so maybe you can understand it: JUCO QBs are stopgaps. They are never looked at to lead the program to new heights. This is my point. A coaching staff is not going to spend valuable time teaching a JUCO guy when they think that what they have in a 4 year guy is just as good.

The staff doesn't think very highly of either of Simms or Newton or they would have offers. QB isn't really a spot with a lot of depth here at Tennessee.

A great athlete does not make a good QB. Newton is such a stud he'll be sitting in Starkville next year. Wow, what a QB.

Simms or Newton, either QB, is nothing more than a tackling dummy until Bray is ready to go, if Tennessee offers either. I highly doubt Newton gets an offer from this staff.

I can read just fine... thank you for your concern though.

You're missing the part where Cameron Newton is not your conventional JUCO player. He isn't playing JUCO because no school wanted him. He is playing JUCO because he didn't want to sit out a year. How you can say nobody expects a JUCO player to "lead their team to new heights" makes no sense considering he isn't there because he is bad. I didn't know that stealing a laptop equates to how you'll perform on a football field.

You don't know what Bradford has to do with a JUCO player and I don't know what playing Junior College because you're transferring has to do with not being good. So I guess we're both confused.

And I was talking about Bradford because you said something along the lines of "The staff isn't going to waste their time on somebody who only has two years". Bradford a three star quarterback accomplished plenty as a redshirt freshman so I'd take my chances on a highly rated recruit that'll be 21/22 with two years of eligibility and is only playing JUCO because he made a mistake. If he were playing JUCO because he sucked, that's a different story. That's not the case...

And he left Florida because he was 3rd string.

I'm not against bringing Newton to Knoxville...probably beats the hell out of having Stephens behind center.

But comparing Newton to Bradford and Young is just silly.

Well he said what can you do in two years... My point was that you can do a lot. Newton was a five star recruit and Bradford only three. Obviously the star system doesn't mean anything(to an extent) but neither does sitting behind Tebow and Brantley who is suppose to be amazing. After seeing Cassel in the NFL, are we suppose to believe he sucked just because he didn't get off the bench at USC? Florida is currently on top and that's not an easy depth chart to make a dent in at the moment. Especially when you're in the doghouse.
