'10 JUCO QB Cameron Newton

He was pretty solid as a Freshman in replace of Ainge versus some pretty good teams. What changed since then? I'll tell you what changed. David Cutcliffe is what changed. Something tells me if Cutcliffe were still here, Crompton would be performing better.

Didn't Cutliffe make a comment a few years back about crompton? Saying something like if he was the qb than they wouldn't win in the SEC? I remember he made a comment like that...just not sure as to the specifics....

I think it was something about how Crompton would never be his starting QB. I'm not sure either though.

It was something along those lines....

Here is my thought on Newton....

Every coach and player has an ego....i think CLK came in thinking he could improve the qb play...the season is still early...but I don't see Crompton improving...Our qb's for next year will be a Lamaison, career backup, and Bray...

I really believe that CLK (unless he just thinks he can't play here after evaluating Newton this season) will offer Newton...

I'm not big on Newton, but I do think we should probably take him. Lamaison just isn't good and there isn't much potential there.

Stephens has proven to be mediocre at best.

Bray is an unproven commodity with a ton of upside who may not start right away.

Taking Newton gets us in that 1 QB per year thing (NS-Sr, CN-Jr, NL-Soph, TB-Fresh), and he gives us a possible starter, or backup plan at worst. Plus he's more mobile than any other QBs we have, which will be a plus behind our OL next year.

In a normal situation, Im not sure I would be that big on him either.

I think we need another option for next year, if he measures up to that.

Maybe the staff is waiting to offer him with the fear they may end any chance of getting another QB they are trying to convince to change their commitment.. It seems like they don't give up on a player until they put their name on the dotted line...

Guys, don't get me wrong, I would love to see him running UTs offense. However he wants a starting position handed to him. The staff doesn't want to do that right now. They may later if they don't get another system QB, but they are trying to get another signal caller right now. They want to take two qbs this class if they can.

This just makes sense. I agree. As for his comments about starting immediately, I think he's a pretty confident guy who knows he will earn the starting position on a team that is in UT's above cited situation.

I agree with all this...

I agree. There's no way they think Bray's the man fall 2010.
Negative...thinking he MAY prove to be able, and being convinced are two different things entirely. Please don't get them confused. The staff may very well feel that Bray has the goods, especially with Spring practice, summer voluntary workouts and Fall camp to get acclimated to the system. I don't think that is the ideal scenario, but it may well be what they are faced with.
If Stephens cannot supplant Crompton this season and come on strong, odds are he will not be the starter next year either.

Cam Newton, if he can impress the staff, seems to be the best short term remedy for our infirmity at the QB position. Otherwise, we're in for another year or two of growing pains.

i now think we need this guy he is a great short term solution, i would not feel comfortable with niether a true fresh or NS playing quarterback. I think certaintly we should offer and bring this guy in cuz he is mobile which will help the poopy Oline next year and cmon he has to be better than crompton. i say offer him and sign him

good post, bb. having a quarterback that can get a few first downs with his feet, could really change the compexion(sp) of our offense next year.

I believe in the coaching staff. I believe they will turn this program around.

But IMO this needs to get done. Newton just seems like the answer. Not that he is going to win any championships for us. But we need someone the next couple years. If they plan on Stephens playing next year I just don't understand why he isn't playing now. I do think Bray or 2011 QB whoever that turns out to be is going to be very good. But it is very hard if not impossible to win with true freshmen in the SEC.

I know this staff has to lay eyes on any prospect before they will offer. Maybe that is the hold up. I don't know. But I just hope we don't wait to long again on another QB. This just seems like we have been down this road before.

The thing is they have tons of footage at their disposal.. If they haven't offered yet, I'm afraid they wont offer..

Has Mississippi State already offered?
