'10 GA CB Marcques Dixon

Well, let's be honest, I agree that a coach's impressions are often much better than any ranking service. However, there does need to be some clarification on this guy. First, only Rivals has him as a 3* player; ESPN has him as a 2*, and Scout has him as a 1* (although that often just means they haven't evaluated him yet). Additionally, saying other top programs like UGA and Bama were after this guy isn't exactly true... neither of those schools actually offered him a scholarship. When these ranking services list schools of interest, that means the player is interested in the schools, not necessarily the other way around.

Other than Miami, the only other major program to offer him a scholly was UT. His other offers were from the likes of UAB, Southern Miss, and Central Michigan... programs not exactly known for corralling top talent.

I agree with the poster above who said, more than star rankings, a good measure of a player's talent is by who wants him... so this commitment is a little strange for a program like UT.

If you read the thread you would know why he isn't rated higher..his film just got out less than month ago and TN and Miami both verbally offered within 10 days of watching film...Bama also started coming hard but they already have a few DB commits and just got Fulton as expected so there was no need to officially offer being full...nice try troll

the rating system is important but it isnt everything... the last couple of articles are all talking about he is a sleeper and a dangerous return man and corner... who would you rather have dennis rogan a 3 star or brent vinson a 5 star or d. moore a 3 star or kenny o'neal a 5 star???? rivals and scout strike out a lot and miss a whole bunch b/c they focus on top talent

It isn't uncommon for players that haven't been fully evaluated to have 1 star. I'm saying if you think it is "spin" to say he would be a worthwhile addition to this class because scout currently lists him as a 1 star, your thinking is flawed. I am not big on stars, but he will probably be a 3 star after he is looked at. Even if he is not, he still had enough measurables and tape to make the staff think he is worth a scholarship, and whether he is a bust or not their opinion means a lot more than yours. That isn't spin.

Question. Is it better to not click "Post Reply" and for it to be assumed incorrect or to make trollish posts and remove all doubt?
Well paraphrased. Yet, I am far from incorrect. As a matter of fact, I am the exact opposite - what is that? - oh, yes. I am correct. All your cleverness will not change that.

As of today, January 5th, Dixon is a 1-star prospect.

I am not saying he won't be a good player. If he joins the Vols, I'll pull for him. But those who speak of Orgeron pulling a coup by offering this guy are conveniently ignoring or repressing the reality that the Vols are missing on their prime targets and settling for 'diamonds in the rough'.

But your comment was cute. Though we both know to insult someone is easier than to provide a cogent counter-argument. Nice try, though.

He is a 3 star on rivals, and hasn't actually been evaluated on Scout. Jesus Christ.

Not far from a 4 star on rivals. His RR is 5.7 and 5.8 is 4 star. Not necessarily on the verge of a fourth star, but still ranked ahead of most 3 star players, and that's with a tape only newly released.

The Scout guy who rates the guys in the south just received his film and has not had a chance to watch it yet. He did tell me that Dixon is definitely getting some stars. Check your facts. kthxbai...
Great, LV. I don't check facts (other than his current 1-star on Scout). I speculate.

So this guy has so flown under the radar that no scouts who went to see Stripling, Malcome, Mincy, or Terrence Smith and other SW DeKalb prospects (or any players on their competition) play live offered him or requested film until this week?

I hope he gets 5 stars. I hope he becomes an All-American for the Vols. But signs like offering this guy so late in the recruiting season seems like we should temper our expectations for this current class.

(Very convenient of you to leave out other sources of recruiting ratings to make this pitiful argument attempt to hold water)

(Prime targets like Chris Donald and Brent Vinson?)

Your lack of ability to understand how the recruiting process (and ranking process) works is what makes you incorrect. No one's saying this guy is going to set the world on fire, All-Conference, All-NCAA nominations all over the place). We're saying the coaches by accepting his commitment now believe they have a good player. Your blatant obsession with stars (especially when the one source rating him as a 1-star has "yet" to even evaluate that player per their typical standards) is what makes your argument weak and your disdain for our recruiting tiresome and purely drivel.

If I'm not mistaken someone cited a source at Scout that specifically said they hadn't rated him, right?

FWIW, UT's staff has held off on offering 3* players and even 4* players because they thought someone better was available. They treat scholarship offers as a valuable commodity and ONLY offer them to guys they really want to accept them... because they just might do it.

They evaluated this kid, loved him, then sent one of their two closers to make the offer and get a commitment.

He could be a dud but the staff apparently thinks otherwise.

Some players are just good. Some players need some development and solid coaching to reach their full potential. Orgeron found Mcluster and he's good enough to start for any team in the SEC. Some times you take a chance on some kids. Brandon James was a 2* recruit and one of UFs assistants practically begged Meyer to offer him and look how that turned out. UF didn't need to take James but they did. I'll trust Coach Os evaluations.
Welcome to Big Orange country Marcques!

Montori Hughes wasn't even ranked until he committed to us about a week before signing day. Now he's our best DT and a future 1st day draft pick

How shall we phoenetically attack his name?
"mar-cus" or
"mar-kez" or
"mar-kwez" or something else?
Your welcome in advance for asking the question that breaks this thread wide open. I'll hang up and listen.

You're an idiot.

Rankings are usually based off of previous seasons. I believe he didn't play his junior year. When he moves up on Scout after they watch his film will you insert your foot in mouth.

You honestly seem to have no clue how to 'star' process works to be putting so much stock in them.:peace2:

Marcques Dixon's commitment to Tennessee doesn't mean his recruitment has finished.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound defensive back from Southwest DeKalb High School in Decatur, Ga., committed to UT defensive line coach/recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron on Monday.

Dixon made the commitment but plans to visit Miami and Southern Miss this month.

"I want to see how I like everything around there and make sure Tennessee is the right decision for me," Dixon said. "Hopefully I'll be set."

Dixon said he's "85 percent" set on his commitment to UT.

He plans to visit Southern Miss on Jan. 15, UT on Jan. 22 and Miami on Jan. 28.

Dixon said he told Orgeron about his plan to visit other schools.

"He said he's going to try to talk me out of the Miami visit," Dixon said. "He said he knows I would like Miami but he didn't mind me taking that visit."

Dixon took an unofficial visit to UT on Oct. 31 to watch the Vols play South Carolina.

Dixon said he was impressed when the Vols switched from orange to black jerseys before kickoff.

"That was nice," he said.

Dixon said the same about UT's on-field performance during Lane Kiffin's first year as head coach.

Dixon said he liked how Kiffin's team exceeded expectations by finishing second in the SEC Eastern division.

"I saw a lot of potential from them as a team," Dixon said. "With it being their first year you weren't expecting them to do as well as they did. I feel like in the future I could contribute to their team."

UT has been looking to improve its depth in the defensive backfield with the 2010 class.

Dixon, who said he could play cornerback or safety, said Orgeron emphasized UT's immediate needs in the defensive backfield.

"Being able to come in and play right away played a big role in me making my decision," Dixon said.

Going Green: Offensive lineman Chaz Green from Tampa (Fla.) Catholic High told The Orlando Sentinel he's favoring UT.

The 6-6, 290-pound Green is also considering Florida, Ohio State and Southern California.

Green, who visited UT in October, will take official visits to Florida on Jan. 15 and USC on Jan. 22.

He plans to announce his decision on National Signing Day on Feb. 3.

Green credited UT offensive line coach James Cregg as a reason the Vols are standing out.

"He sat down and showed me where I would fit into the offense and how they would use me," Green told the newspaper. "We run a lot of the same stuff so I picked up on it quick and it was a good fit."

Vols Out: UT is no longer in the running for linebacker Josh Shirley from Kaiser High in Fontana, Calif.

The 6-3, 220-pound Shirley told Scout.com he's considering USC, Washington, Arizona and Miami.

Shirley told the News Sentinel during the fall he likely would visit UT but never made the trip.
