I think you can expect an announcement by next Friday and the fact that it is being moved up is a good sign for USC if you ask me...

Thanks for letting me post on your board BTW!

i'm not sure about that. pete has been pushing kids to do silent commits to try to combat negative recruiting.

1. My gut says JS goes elsewhere. My gut, though sizeable, is often known to be a dang liar. But sometimes it's right on the money. You don't ever know which it might be until the issue is resolved. It's better suited for hindsight, but it still says JS is not a Vol.

2. Tennessee's needs OL's about as much as a QB -maybe even more. I find it interesting that we get two OL commits on Monday, though they were offered at camps some time ago. Why this week and not last? Why not next week, or the one after? Is there any significance to the timing of their announcements?

3. Florida and USC have something that UT doesn't when it comes to JS's commitment - time - they can easily wait, and UT could least afford to do so. Considering that their efforts at recruiting on the offensive side of the ball are stalled until he signs, UT would not have wanted to delay his announcement.

4. CLK not only took recruits from CUM....he snatched them....and then convinced each to be, let's say, less than forthcoming in their decisions to switch allegiances. CUM would no doubt like to return the favor in similiar fashion. If JS were in my pocket so to speak, I'd have him drag UT along for as long as I could....before breaking their hearts. If I were a player who intended to play for CUM, I'd gladly play along.

5. Interesting that JS specifically mentioned meeting BB at the UT camp. Rumor has it that BB had to oppose the wishes of one or both parents to ultimately choose UT. JS's dad reportedly wants JS at USC. Wonder how long these two talked, and if they still do?

6. It's been well-documented that JS's father developed his own poor-man's QB-training regiment because the family could not afford to do otherwise. I wonder if he'll get used to his life-long project playing on the other side of the continent? I wonder how he'll afford to travel back and forth to Knoxville? His dad was quoted as saying that a single trip to Orlando was so financially taxing on the family that, ""It took us a while to get from under that,". Imagine the cost his parents would incur if they had to fly in and out of McGhee-Tyson, instead.

7. Of the three (3) schools remaining, its hard to believe Tennessee wouldn't see the greatest benefit of his making an announcement next week.

8. How cool would it be if we offered his cousin a scholly - which we all well know that MH would require that we honor - and then JS signs with Florida. Imagine the PR nightmare that CLK would face if he kicked the guy off or revoked his scholarship, thereafter, if he kept his nose clean? Imagine is CUM used him as a mole into the program?

9. Of late, JS has indicated that a packed depth-chart is not a prohibiting factor to selecting his school of choice - removing the single greatest knock against his signing with USC - but this wasn't always his stance. Recall Feldman's blog (ESPN) from June 3rd, when he said, "He says the biggest factors in his decision will be the depth chart (he'd be fine with redshirting but doesn't want to sit behind some starter for three years)...". I wondered what changed his mind in only 30 short days, if it has at all?

10. Feldmen also mentioned in the same blog that JS also listed a program's stability as being very important to him. CUM is most persistently rumored to want to jump to either the NFL or the Irish - and he just hired a new OC. The NCAA just combined the on-going investigations into allegations of USC's violations in both basketball and football. The Trojans just lost their OC and DC's. Remarkably, though CLK and co. have yet to call a single game, and depsite all of the controversies they've encountered, one could argue that they are the most stable of the three programs.

11. Do you think that dad put all of this hard work and effort in to JS's development, only to see him stop at the college level? Do you think that he likes the thought of JS being buried on a depth chart and (likely) only starting for a single year? Do you think that it's worth his son playing on the opposite side of the continent for 3-4 years to advance his chances of making the league, thereafter? Do you think that he likes the idea of his son playing in a system which they themselves admit is not welcomed in the NFL? How about playing in that same system as they attempt to "adapt" it to a more pro-style one, instead?

12. BB's "friend" had pics of him on his visit on her FB page. Then she removed them. Then she cancelled her entire account. He still signed with us. JS taking the rock off his FB might be of equal (or even less) significance to that.

wow that about sums it up. But after all that I think its USC and Pete is throwing Lane a bone by having Scroggs commit early. In fact Pete and/or Scroggs may have already told Lane the deal and that is why there is movement with Tommy Rees. I expect Rettig and Rees to both come in and battle for the starting job in 2011 with Stephens/Lamaison and maybe Newton in 2010. Crank up the running game boys.

I just know that SC gave him a bit of a timeline and him picking on July 25th is far to long away for Kiffin or Carroll.

I also have heard that Boston College is really starting to lean on Rettig and the sooner Jesse decides, the faster either UT or USC can get Rettig.

I know the SC coaches liked Bray as well and he has SDSU and Fresno waiting

Wonder why Rees would have an offer and Rettig not? I was under the impression...especially if you take Chase's own comments at face value, that we have him at #2...not Rees

Fulton commited on a visit.

He moved up his announcement did CUM tell him to do that?

So, we either get Scroggins or Rettig. It sounds like either one has NFL potential.

It does seem like Pete is doing Lane a favor by asking Scroggins to move his announcement up (speculation on the most probable reason for the date change).

I can get excited about either one of these guys and I think either will help us move forward with OL commits. Also, I still like Cam Newton as a JC option, whether he plays QB or moves out for us.

Me too...I wasn't too hot on taking Cam, but I'm starting to warm up to the idea. If we miss on Jesse, I think we need to get Rettig in here, and go with the #'s by pulling in Cam as well (not to mention Lamaison for this 09 class). Rettig probably redshirts and then Cam and Lamaison can duke it out with Stephens for the starting spot.

This is a scenario that may work better with an elite 2011 QB prospect. And, it sounds like that's the better QB class.

I read some comparisons of Rettig to Cutler. That's high praise.

I believe Nick starts over Lamaison.

Lamaison is a definite need, for depth.. They don't want to go to spring practice with just Nick and Mike Rozier as the QBs. With Rozier being a walk-on, not 100% he is still here in spring.

Have to have an assurance of at least 2 QBs and really need 4 in spring.

Larry, it's truthful statements like this that make us a little anxious to sign a QB.

Has anyone ever played QB for both the Orange and White teams in the spring game?

Great post! But now I'm more torn/confused than ever...

As some have already said it feels like PC is doing LK a favor and having him announce early. Kiffin could be doing the same, but in a different way...

My gut/heart keeps telling me he's a Vol!!!

Either way... the suspense is killing me.

Personally, I wonder if he (Rettig) isn't getting some crappy coaching. He doesn't need to have his feet bouncing around/happy feet...just stay on the balls of his feet so he can move them quickly when needed.
Secondly, where he holds the ball must've been coached, cause it's a very unnatural position to hold it up by his ear (instead of around his chest/shoulders). Thirdly, as mentioned on Rivals, he wants to put heat on every throw. If he got coached up good, I could see him being another underrated/under the radar, clone of Cutler.

If the staff feels that way, I'd sign 'Cutler' and be damned with the rest.

Jesse Scroggins to playing in the moore (passing) League football today at 5pm Pacific time! Full report tomorrow =]

TONIGHT: High School Football Passing League
Poly, Jordan, Cabrillo & Lakewood
5pm @ Poly High

All across the country during these hot summer months high school football players are all doing two things: dreaming and practicing. They are all dreaming of that magical season that seems so possible right now. But first, they have to prepare and practice to be ready for the grueling ten-week schedule that awaits them at the end of August.

For the quarterbacks, running backs and receivers, that practice and preparation is all about passing league. In a seven-on-seven battle (everyone on the field except the lineman) schools challenge each other to sandlot-type games that help teams with mental repetitions and timing. We covered one of these passing league tournaments a few weeks ago in Dana Hills (click here for the story).

When I was in high school, these huge passing league tournaments were just gaining momentum and getting bigger, both in size and importance. But my head coach made two things clear: (1) it’s not about the result, it’s about getting better everyday, and (2) We will not play any league opponents in the summer. He wasn’t trying to hide secret formations or plays, but when we skipped tournaments because the cross-town rival was going to be there, he’d say, “we’ll play ‘em when it counts.”

Some Moore League coaches feel differently, however, and that’s good for us fans. Poly, Lakewood, Jordan and Cabrillo will all be at Poly High tonight at 5pm for a little round-robin play that has this reporter chomping at the bit.

I mean, I’ve been jonesing for football since the Super Bowl, so this is perfect timing. Plus, these four teams are the four biggest question marks going into next season. Can Poly really reload like that? Is this really Lakewood’s year? Can Jordan build on last year’s success? Can A.J. Luke build some excitement in Jag Country?

Those questions won’t be answered at Poly tonight, but who cares. The build up is the best part. If you can make it out to PCH and Atlantic, then by all means come check out the action and say hello, but if you can’t, I’ll have the full report up tomorrow.

If you do make it out, here are four things you should keep in mind…

1) Who is the featured ‘Rabbit?

The Jackrabbits graduated a senior class that won back-to-back CIF titles, so reloading might be an understatement. But the most important thing will be the backfield. The line will be big, the receivers will be fast, but will the running back be a bruiser or a speedster? And how will that change the personality of a Poly offense that will have a microscope on it?

2) Is there enough ball for Lakewood?

The Lancers are so stacked at the skill positions that the question becomes, how do you get everyone involved? Yes, running back Jerry Stone needs to get his touches. But quarterback Jesse Scroggins is so good and has so many weapons on the outside, how can you not have him throw the ball 35 times a game?

3) How sneaky can the Panthers be?

Last year Jordan football experienced unprecedented success. Or as coach Scott Meyer put it after his team beat Lakewood, “the program turned the corner tonight.” But like their defensive secondary strategy, can the Panthers sneak up on teams this season like last year?

4) Is that a Jag D or a Poly copy?
Coach A.J. Luke learned to coach at Poly, so obviously he’s taken the ‘Rabbit defensive philosophy with him to Cabrillo. I mean, if it ain’t broke, right? But if the Jaguars are going to win a Moore League game this year, do they have to start looking like themselves, in strategy and attitude?
