#1 Reason Freeze should NOT be hired!

Freeze won't take a head coaching job outside of the SEC. If he does, everyone would be extremely shocked. Coming to UT as OC and waiting it out for 2-3 years positions him best to get back into the SEC. And yes, he would very much take the Vandy job if offered unless he was getting other SEC offers at the same time. He took the Ole Miss job and there isn't much separating those two.
Ole Miss could almost have been considered a dream job for Freeze. He grew up an Ole Miss fan. He had always wanted to be Ole Miss head coach. Besides, when you're coming from Arkansas St, any job in the SEC would look good.

That's the risk hiring any high-performing coach, which is what we want, right?
There is no indentured servitude in college football.

Saban has a high turn over of assistants almost every year. That is because they are successfull

Don't hire a coach because he will probably be successful and attract other schools, instead make a mediocre hire because he will be here until we fire him....................... Makes a lot of sense

Sounds like our MO for the past decade to be honest.

I agree with OP.

It's the unpopular opinion right now; everyone wants the "sexy" hire. I'd be shocked if Freeze doesn't leave after 1 season for a head coaching position. At best, Freeze is a 1-year stop-gap in a year where we have no conceivable chance of competing for the SEC.

If you think of it along those lines, do we really gain anything?

Fwiw, if we do hire Freeze, I think he'll do great for the 1 year he's here, but it's not clear to me that the trade-off is worth it, if we're just out searching for another OC a year from now.

Hope I'm wrong (and I may very well be).

As a sufferer of BVS, I will take short term happiness and hope for the best.
OP point is valid but I agree to take the best guy on the board whoever it is. Then JG could set a guiness book world record for having FIVE OC’s in 5 years!! Only in vol country.

Never go for the second best in anything you do. Only the best is sufficient. The best oc I know is Lane Kiffin (my opinion and I respect yours). I understand why not many want him. Therefore, I understand taking the second best OC, Hugh Freeze !!!

Since we are throwing ifn's and mights out lets try this. If'n we get Freeze and ifn' he turns into a number 1 OC after 2 years. Saban might retire and ifn' JP goes to Bama we might have our new head coach already on the staff. No new head coach perfect.

Hugh is a one and done OC! We will sign at least 3 OL that will play next year and they will be better than what we had this year. The entire team will be better. The bottom is 7-5. He will get offered HC at AU, FSU and we'll be doing this dance again. Lindsey will be here a few years, his numbers are almost as good and we need continuity!
If we do not hire Freeze the i hope we hire Dan Enos from Bama. He is the asst head coach and QB coach. If Bama's OC leaves he probaly ends up with the OC job at Bama. I think for the long term Enos would be better.

This is rich. Hugh Freeze has zero chance of being a 1 year OC for us unless we go win the SEC. Even then, Saban likely has a heart attack and retires with Pruitt taking over and Freeze taking over Tennessee.

I'm just glad I'm not the only one that's had this thought. Let's say the offense turns the corner with Freeze we win 7-8 games in 2019 and 9-10 games in 2020. Saban retires, Dabo gets a 15m/yr deal to stay at Clemson. CJP has to start looking good to Bama. They throw the bank, we go cheap. Freeze starts to look good for UT.

Not likely, but not impossible.

At this point I don’t care if he can help get the ball rolling that’s what we need. Look at Bama most good OC’s there leave as well. You just need to not botch the next hire. I say bring him we have been down for so long we need a good coach like him on staff.

I don't quite understand your logic. If we're afraid to hire someone because he may be so good that he will leave after one year, then we should just be happy with anyone and stay in the middle of the pack. You should always hire the best available and roll with it. I'm sure everyone who's interviewed for this position has aspirations of moving on to a head coach position.

I disagree. Now I don’t think he would be here 5 years but I think it may take a couple even 3 years for the stinch to leave him for head coaching job

No, he has too many past issues that he skated with boosters. As an assistant he may be OK, as HC, no.

Saban is not gonna retire soon.
I made a joke.

Also- Dabo isn’t going to Bama. Clemson has just as much money and Bama gives Dabo nothing Clemson can’t give him.

Only way Pruitt goes to Bama is if we start winning big and others tell Bama no.

Also, if Pruitt is winning where Bama wants him, we aren’t gonna go cheap on him.

OC’s come and go. Players come for the head coach.

I think Auburn will face the same thing next year with a massive buyout. Plus Malzahn is the type of coach who may go 10-2 again. Just never know.

There are people, if there is a deal to be made with Freeze, who write up contacts for a living; folks at TN who know best how to handle the tenure of his coaching. Bottom line, if they are good with what is included in a contract; who am I "not to be!" Now that I've visited this thread, I'll kindly see myself out. Go Vols!

We don't have a good recent history with coaches and contracts. See Fulmer, Kiffin, Dooley, and Butch.

Anyone can be one and done. Helton was. You just never know if someone will stick around or bolt - so why not hire the best and lock them in with a contract that will hurt them if they try to leave.
The problem is with a hot commodity like he apparently is, getting him to sign a punitive contract will be difficult.
