#1 qualification for new coach

This makes no sense. Who have we hired that had a good reputation that got destroyed once he got here? Butch didn't have a good reputation, nor did Dooley or Kiffin. If you have a good reputation the only way to ruin that is to start losing, not do your job or burn bridges with people.

Jason I think that is the reason we were stuck with Butch, Kiffin and Dooley...

Debbie and some others had great post on lateral moves of P5 coaches and Nick Saban and others and the reasons for their moves....
I dont think Mullen will budge...he has a lot of people coming back next year and may win the west and play for a championship...I dont think Mullen is going to leave that

These so called big time coaches worry about their reputations as great coaches being diminished if they should fail at Tennessee....Lots and Lots of pressure to win right away at Tennessee....These big time coaches prefer areas of a safe bet....for instance lets say a great recruiting base to choose from...they fear failure so they want to make sure all the components are in place for success first before they consider the job...no lateral moves for a big time coach....Look for the Mike Norvell type

No big time coach fears failure because they don't believe they will fail. No coach sits around and worries about coming to TN then failing and losing their reputation. If they fail it's because they failed and nobody else. They have every resource available. There is no such thing as a safe bet. A great recruiting base does not guarantee a coach will win. If that was the case Texas,LSU, Florida,GA would be playing for Championships every year and not going through Coach's every 4-5 years. And lateral moves are very possible if the coach is being failed by his administration. Exactly why Jimbo and Gundy are looking to leave. The elite Coach's tend to have a god complex and don't look for the safe bet. They believe they can win no matter the circumstances. No disrespect but nothing about this post is close to being correct.

I do not stress one qualification. It is a package deal for me. I'm looking for a marriage and not another hot date. Some of the qualifications/requirements for next UT Coaching search:

1) All of the positives we had with CBJ like recruiting, program building, grades
2) All of the things we did not have with CBJ like wins >> losses. Believe it or not McElwain actually meets this requirement until he lost half his team to criminal activity.
3) Keeps the program clean, players out of jail, NCAA out of Knoxville
4) Can speak to fans and media without repeating himself and "footballisms"
5) Isn't interested in a couple years and return to alma mater. This is his end game.
6) If losses > wins after three years, terminate without payout.
7) Will pick up the recruiting network CBJ built and start bringing in bigger, meaner, tougher, smarter, and faster recruits. No criminals or injured projects.
8) Has experience beating Bama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, and top tier SEC teams.

Like I said, it is a package deal. We need to do more than one thing at a time.

I honestly don't want Mullen. He supposedly does not interview well and is very hard to work with. Which is one reason he gets interviewed a lot but never offered a job. You seem like a good guy and definitely don't mean to disagree with this post but I do think the elite Coach's believe they can win anywhere and won't take the safe bets. Let's be honest there really is no safe bets or given when it comes to recruiting.

Since we have such a knowledgeable football crew on here this morning let me ask you this....
if Florida passes on Chip Kelly do you think we take a look at him...does he carry toooo much baggage....does his personality trait hurt him

You mean the fact that he's kind of a douche? I think it's hurt in the past with some as far as interviewing. Patterson was definitely passed over BC he didn't present as well as Kiffin. Tennessee has to get past that and hire the best coach though. Saban, franklin, Meyer, harbaugh, Leach, etc, all those guys are quirky to downright abrasive and yet they win.

Absolutely true. Then you have to understand why they are pissed off. Very few schools piss off a proven winner unless he's a real *******.

Texas, LSU, southern cal, Florida and Oklahoma haven't attracted a proven "big time" winner in recent years but Tennessee is going to.....Gotcha

I hope so. He needs to have a great medical staff of healers with him.

The new coach absolutely must have Monday Night Football booth experience. This is make or break criteria in my mind. Graduate assistant experience on the hill would be a close second. JMO and OMO.

Please don't hammer me too hard for this, but I have a close friend that works for ESPN and has mentioned to me all year that when the college coaching positions come open not be surprised to hear Rex Ryan to be a legitimate candidate. Just curious to hear thoughts as him as a college coach.
