There is a reason he's not been a head coach in the 17yrs he's been at V-Tech. I can't even remember him being rumored for a job.
That being he works for a head coach who is an icon for the VT university. As for him being lured away loyalty is a commodity these days it seems.

1. John Gruden - I know he's set in TB...but he'd fit like a glove.
2. Bud Foster - a defense 1st guy that is as good as it gets in making a defense outta whatever he has.
3. Bill Cowher - the next Parcells who actually knows what he's doing, sooner or later he'll be tired of leisure.

I know I'm new, but I had to chime in...
My first choice has gotta be Stoops, possibility he would leave OK for a chance to coach in the SEC.
-Enough with Skip Holtz, he is unproven, and we need a name with a championship ring, see what Saban's done in two years.
-Enough with Chris Peterson, one trick play a few years ago is not enough to warrant a HC job in the SEC.
Just my two cents, go vols

Jim Leavitt. Started with Bill Snyder at K State. Coached with Mangino, Kansas HC, Bob Stoops, OKy HC, and Mike Stoops, Arizona or Ariz State HC. Very firey, but mentored will under Snyder. He knows how to build from scratch. USF cannot feed his ego enough to stay there forever. He could be money whipped out of USF to almost any big program, IMO.

All branches of the Hayden Fry coaching tree, might I add..

Please no coaches from the NFL

Just being silly because I don't see Fulmer leaving UT anytime soon. He's to much of family for this administration to ask for his resignation. Also it would cost big bucks to buy him out.

Spurrier is too old. If we hired him, chances are he wouldn't be there too long. I want an up and comer who's hungry and motivated.

But we could get a Spurrier family package that includes Jr. To be Coordinator, and then take over when Steve Sr. is done. They both have championship experience, and Steve is born and raised in Kville. Everytime I think about who i want most as a new coach I think of Spurrier in the Head phones, orange visor, and running up the score against UAB, not looking horrid against them, and not losing to Florida every year.

I like Will Muschamp. My dream hire would be Bob Stoops but that will never happen.

Yeah I would like a guy who has lost five of his last six bowl games too!!!!

Sheesh, reading this tread has been th biggest waste of my time that I can remember.

"On February 22, 2007, the Idaho State Board of Education approved a new contract for Petersen, paying him $4.25 million for five years"

Just look at his stats: 25-3 in his third season as head coach.

I know some people are complaining on here about him inheriting players but look at Urban Meyer. He was HC at Bowling Green State and Utah for two seasons each and look at what he has done at Florida.

Peterson runs a wide open offense and isn't afraid to let his balls hang when the time calls for it. We need new blood, someone who has a fresh offensive mindset. With our recruiting budget and history Peterson would thrive.

People need to wake up and see that the SEC has had an awakening in the past 4-5 years. New coaches (Miles, Meyer, Saban (all three have their teams currently in the top 10)) and new offensive mindsets, not just the old style of run up the middle and simple pass routes. Fulmer has been a great coach but the train has left the station and Fulmer wasn't on board his style of coaching and playcalling are dinosaurs in a new era.

Tennessee will only be great again when the AD realizes this and brings in someone like a Peterson who is innovative and has proven themselves on a smaller stage. Bring in a proven coach from a small school and they get excited and become dedicated to the program. Bring in a so-so coach from a bigger name school and they feel its their right to be there.

Actually..... Spurrier is an ole ball player from Johnson City (Science Hill).

Here's an idea I haven't seen floating around that would make a heck of a story. Why not go for a current head coach of a powerhouse school? UT has proven they can play ball, recruit, and (probably very important to the coach) pay the big time 3 million plus salary to feed the ego. So, with that in mind, here are four coaches that I think could be lured away from their current places.

Tommy Tuberville: Remember a few years ago when AU tried to burn him and hire another coach under his nose. He could really get back at the school this way. Not to mention he could keep up his rival with Alabama and keep his winning streak intact along the way. I like Tuberville's current coordinators... especially the OC's spread attack. He's not afraid to clean house if the system is broke and bring someone else in. He can recruit and is fairly young.

Mack Brown: A little older, but it wouldn't be the first time he left a good team and program for greener pastures. this is more of a stretch since he's in a gold mine of recruits at texas. But hey, coaches are all about testing the waters to see if they can succeed at "the next place." Why court Brown. He has set deep texas roots the past 11 years in texas (that's gotta help recruiting), it would be easy to match and raise his current salary of nearly 3 mill., and he knows what it takes to face a hated rival like OU.

Bo Pelini: It times to get back our SEC son and let him loose on the comp. He has a few things going for him. He is still quite young-40ish. he would be the cheapest to woo away because his salary is still low and so is the buyout clause. Think about it. IF you could go from making 1.1 mil a year to 3 MILLION doing the same thing, wouldn't you do it. And perhaps the best thing going for him is his pedigree. His tenure at LSU is a big plus and this year at NEB will give him head coaching experience that could shut the naysayers up.

Norm Chow: I know he is not a head coach, but to me that is splitting hairs. He has everything Ricky has except the salary and title. UT could give him the money, the title, and the facilties that are superior in all the land. Chow could give us the "Midas" touch he has on recruiting that we desperately need. Imagine the Qb's we could bring in with him at the helm. People could be saying, "Manning who?" in 2015 if he were to invited to coach at Tenn. Plus, he owns California in recruiting. The only knock i see is that he is 55. Not old, but how many more years does he want to keep coaching. Also, would he want to pack up again and come back out to the Southeast? Would he be too sour on the state of Tennessee for what the Titans did to him that he snubs the Big Orange? It certainly would be worth a try.

OK, I gave you four names. Just trying to think outside the box a little. Here is a list of other names I wanted to throw out.

Rich Rodriquez: things are sour in Mich. He is a great coach and great at recruiting..not to mention his offense.
Jeff Tedford: nothing needs to be said. We saw what he could do last year.
Butch Davis: a very good scenario
Jim Harbaugh: impressive record... not sure if it would trickle over to the SEC though.
Troy Calhoun: his work at Air Force is impressive. His pedigree is more so.
Bret Bielema: Wisconsin's head coach has youth (38), wins (80%), and enthusiasm. However, his inexperience and recruiting are still not developed enough to tell us what he could do at UT.

All right, there you have it. 10 names thrown out. Discuss, dissect, and diss. I want to hear what you guys think.

None are realistic choices. Norm Chow wouldn't be able to recruit and evidently wasn't good enough to coach Stanford. Bo Pelini is in his first year coaching his alma mater. Mack Brown is making plenty at Texas and has accomplished even less than Fulmer with much more talent and in a crappier conference. Auburn isn't going to let Tubbs leave after the 2004 and 2005 seasons.

I have some friends who are Texas grads/fans who would gladly give us Mack Brown.

Can anybody tell me why Skip Holtz is not a good choice? This is a honest question! Seems to me... I would be scared to play ECU right now. They look pretty good. Just asking!!

Seems they just got beat by a team that had their teeth kicked in by an awful South Carolina team. Holtz has done nothing but beat up a couple of overrated teams that used to be good. Virginia Tech has been a joke for years. West Virginia ceased to be respectable as soon as Rich Rodriguez left town. Those are by far Skip's two biggest wins. He's done nothing. He is nothing. His offenses at South Carolina sucked. At his last HC gig, he was 38-23. At ECU he's 22-17. There are plenty of better coaches out there.

Great! I just wanted an honest response. Because, I don't know much about the guy. I really don't know who would excite me to be head coach!

Just wikipedia some of the names dropped in this thread. You'll get an idea of who's been successful.
