"It was fun actually," Williams said about his basketball career. "I just realized it wasn't for me after this year. I felt like it just ran its course."

"I've already been released. I'm finished up at MTSU, made the Dean's List there," Williams offered. "I'll probably take a class in July so I can go ahead and move out and start working out. Because, you know, I've been out for two years and I'm a little behind. The quicker, the better."

"Man it's like a blessing. Because, a lot of guys pray for this opportunity and a lot of guys wouldn't get the chance to go somewhere like Knoxville," Williams added. "This opportunity right here is like a dream come true, you know, going back to the sport where it all started it."

This kid is walking on at UT this year and will be here in school in July.

He has been playing basketball for the past couple of years at MTSU, but has decided to go back to football which alot of people conisdered his best sport.

He was only a 2star in football but did hold offers from Orgeron at Ole Miss, Spurrier at USCjr, Troy, and MTSU so it isn't like he's your normal walk-on. Just wanted to play bball instead.

He had over 1,000 yards and 17 TDs his senior season.

According to this quote from the VQ article, he will NOT have to sit out this year. I'm not sure why.

Tennessee is settled on its top two wideouts of Gerald Jones and Denarius Moore, but only Marsalis Teague truly stepped up and grabbed a spot in the rotation behind the senior duo. The lack of established depth, although the Vols have a deep group of incoming freshman receivers, gives Williams a chance to see meaningful reps in fall camp.

This jump-ball receiver has some great hands and concentration on the deep ball and willing to go over the middle for a catch. While he does have a tendency to jump for every ball, even when not necessary, he does show the ability to outleap defensive backs on a consistent basis. Could work on getting a little more separation, but shows a little burst of explosion trying to catch up with balls thrown a little long.

As a junior, Williams made 27 catches in seven regular season games for 445 yards and seven touchdowns en route to receiving All-Region and All-Midstate honors. As a sophomore he caught 33 passes for 571 yards and six touchdowns while earning the same honors and was named as a finalist for Mr. Basketball in Tennessee.

"I received an offer from Ole Miss early last week," added DeMario Williams.

How did the Rebels extend their offer?

"They told my coach that I was exactly what they were looking for. They liked my size, height, and the way I catch the ball. They said I would be a perfect fit for their system. They want to get me down there."

- May 2007

Ole Miss assistant coach Hugh Freeze also has been in hot pursuit.

"They have already offered too and I hear from them almost every day," Williams said. "They are a good program of course and they are in the SEC."

- July 2007. Amost every day? Jesus, O is relentless.

"I like everything about Ole Miss," he said. "Coach (Hugh) Freeze is my recruiter, and he has been on me pretty hard."

- August 2007

"I still talk to Ole Miss pretty much all of the time. I use to talk to South Carolina all of the time before they quit texting us. But since the rule came out, I have not talked to them as much lately. South Carolina has talked to my coach a lot lately though. Ole Miss will email my coach, and I just call them back. They are telling me to come in for an official visit so I can check out their campus. I am going to wait on my decision until I take all five of my visits."

- November 2007

Sounds like Orgeron wanted him pretty bad. He stayed on him hard his whole recruitment.

This is not a normal walk on. This kid has some huge upside. There is some athletic potential here imo.

Im sure glad Ogeron wanted this kid, if not we would hear the constant crap about Dooley not going after elite talent.

I think it's because he's changing sports. Could be wrong though.

I'm sure its like Paulus from Duke going to play QB @ Cuse. Doesn't hurt to be in 2 completely different conferences either.

theres a rule where you get a 5th yr of eligibility when u graduate on time and changed sports. the QB from Wake Forest (before Skinner) Brent Hodges did this too when he transfered to UCF.

I think Tennessee is on the verge of becoming "Wide Receiver U" once again. With the veterans of Jones, Moore, and Teague.... You have the likes of Rogers, Hunter, Milton, and now Williams. I believe the guy that will make the most impact in this group is a toss-up between DaRick Rogers and Justin Hunter. With all the future playmakers coming in, Rocky Top will be heard nationwide! And then, we will praise Coach Dooley and think to ourselves "LANE WHO?!"

1 yr

Could it be because he is going to walk-on?

the ncaa allows an extra transfer yr without sitting out if u graduate in 4 yrs

He said he is finished and was on the dean list.

I took that as him being finished academically.

It's because he played basketball. If he was playing bball at UT he would have to sit out a year

This thread was started yesterday on the young man. Maybe the mods can merge? He went to a high school that was rural and had no football... played basketball at (Culleoka) He co-oped with Columbia Central to play football. Apparently he is a superb athlete but came up in a bad situatuion. His mother was murdered in December 09 so he missed alot of basketball at MTSU and apparently needs a fresh start on life.
