Duke rarely plays home and home nonconference series anymore. The only time they do is when they have a chance to play a team in a recruiting market they want to get into, like Georgetown or Villanova. The Devils generally schedule good non BCS conference teams at home and neutral site games with name opponents. I see no reason for UT to agree to any series that doesn't include a game in Knoxville. It's not like we have any problem getting on television these days.

What was the deal with the NIT tournament at the beginning of the season? Was that a one-time thing? Were we invited, but won't be again? How does it work?

The preseason NIT, like Maui and other early season tournaments, work on 4 year rotations. So, it will be awhile before we can go back to NYC. However, we can go to Hawaii, play in the Coaches v. Cancer, etc. The NCAA removed the restrictions on those tournaments. We can play in a different one every year now, if we can get the invites.

Tennessee can't go to Maui, because Buzz Peterson's last team played in that tournament. They could conceivably play in one of the other tournments in Hawaii, if those fields aren't already full and Tennessee has room on their schedule. Vanderbilt isn't the first mediocre team to ever reach the Sweet 16. All you need is a Charmin soft draw like they got. They're still the team that lost to Furman, Appalachian State, Auburn, and twice to Arkansas. Georgetown will bring their little charade to a crashing halt next week.

How can you list a team's bad losses without considering their quality wins?

Florida, GaTech, Kentucky x2, UT, all the other SEC teams, now GW, and your favorite: WSU.

Anyways, listing Ark with the rest doesn't seem to fit in, as they made it into the field of 64 (granted, somewhat controversially) but definitely on the top-half of the league.

I'm not trying to say I think Vandy will beat the Hoyas, it just frustrates me that you will not relent one bit. You continue to say wait until next game when they will be revealed by the better opponent. I'm sure you considered WSU the better team before (probably even after) then game.

No, they are probably not going to beat Georgetown. Does that make them mediocre? I don't think so. I would say they are near the top 20-30 teams right now, which I would classify as "good".

As I said earlier, I labeled Washington State as probably the least talented 3 seed in tournament history. No great kudos for beating them. As for GW, that's a team that finished 3rd in a year that the A10 was as bad as it has been in 20 years. The only reason they were in the tournament was that X took a night off against Rhode Island. GW should have been about a 14 seed. The fact they were an 11 was an absolute joke.

Arkansas wasn't in the top half of the SEC. There were five teams in the East better than them and both Mississippi schools finished ahead of them. We all saw what they were all about in their first round game.

No, I did that earlier this week. Unlike a number of posters around here, I don't engage in revisionist history. Their losing to Vanderbilt simply proved I was right.

All I know is you made some very disparaging comments about Vandy throughout the season. Your usual blanket statements, regarding anything that didn't fit your predetermined view as either a fluke or an overrated opponent. You spoke as if getting beat by Vanderbilt this year meant you amounted to nothing (and still do - see Gdub and WSU).

Duke Crews said they were probably going to play in the Maui Invitational next season.. We'll see on that I guees. But if not, they'll schedule us a tournament somewhere in November..

If you can show me anything on GW's resume that indicates they were a quality club, I'd love to see it. Wazzu got by all season on coaching and style of play. They have maybe 4 guys who are legit high major players. Their lack of overall talent and athleticism was apparent to anyone who watched them play.

Looking at the teams that have already reserved their Sweet 16 spot, it does seem Vandy had the easiest go at it. My question is, if they were so terrible shouldn't it be the other way around - with us wondering how WSU got so lucky in their draw to face the Commodores in the second round?

There's a difference between being "down on" a team and realistically evaluating what they are. Wazzu should be exceptionally proud of their accomplishments this year. There's a reason Tony Bennett will get a number of votes for National Coach of the Year. However, they didn't beat either of the two most talented teams in the PAC 10 this season. They used their style, which is extremely tough for teams without solid point guard play, like USC, to play against to their advantage. They also won an inordinate number of close games. Their PAC 10 record could have easily been 9-9.

I've seen next years Maui field. Unless someone dropped out after I looked in January, UT isn't going there next season.

You're correct. I just looked at the abysmal field they assembled.. Not near as immpressive as last November's crop. We'll land somewhere else next year.

Most of those twenty teams that could have been .500 in their conference are done for the season now. Margin of victory is extremely instructive in evaluating the overall talent on a given team. If you're consistently blowing people out, that means you're just plain better than your opponents. If you win a bunch of games by 5 points or less, that most likely means you've gotten an inordinate number of breaks going your way. Those things even out over time.

Alaska and Maui both generally book a year or two ahead. We won't be playing in either of those events in the next couple of years.
