Much like Curt Cignetti with Indiana last year, fi rst-year
head coach Fran Brown made an electric debut with
Syracuse, leading the Orange to a 10-win season, their
best record since 2018. But with just 50% of last year’s juice
returning – lowest in the ACC, 90th nationally – the roster
is thin. The new starting quarterback is Steve Angeli, who
spent three years at Notre Dame, beating out Rickie Collins,
a four-star transfer from LSU. Angeli started the Sun Bowl
for the Fighting Irish in 2023 after Sam Hartman opted out
of the season’s fi nal game and completed 15 of 19 passes for
232 yards and three touchdowns in a blowout win. Today’s
‘High Noon’ rendition of the Kickoff Classic takes place
at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, but that shouldn’t
matter to Tennessee. Vols have chewed up and spit out
non-conference foes in regular-season games of late, going
12-0 SU and 9-0 ATS the previous three seasons, while
outscoring the last fi ve foes, 306-16! Check this out: SEC
teams are 17-2 SU in the Kickoff Classic while ACC teams are
3-15 outright. SEC teams are also 14-1 SU all-time against
ACC teams in the Kickoff Classic by an average win margin of
16.1 points per game. Looking ahead for Syracuse, a savage
schedule awaits with road clashes against Clemson, SMU,
Miami, and Notre Dame, making this the contest the fi rst
of a treacherous fi ve-game road trek. Two things keep us
off the Cuse: a 1-8 ATS ledger in lid lifters, and the fact
that Syracuse went 5-7 in 2019 and 4-8 in 2002, following
its last two ten-win seasons. We seal the deal with THE
CLINCHER: College Football Playoff losers have gone
26-4 in season-opening games the following year by
an average win margin of 24.3 points per game.
