I get the gist of this, but can someone give a definitive explanation, and the origin? Is the original post still up?

Kinda fun.

All you need to know is that @DougAtkins91 risked permanent brain damage from excessive alcohol consumption, in order to ensure that only positive statements are posted on these forums, and his seal of certification can only be applied to posts that meet his standards.

Just ask yourself WWDA91D?

The answer is always "nite your post or don't post".

Okay, so @tnutater in post 97 of the "Negavols must shut up. Nite your post or don't post" thread explained it thusly ... and I quote ... "Nite the post is the new standard reply to a negavol post that all the cool kids are using.
However.... to be official, it must include the Doug Atkins 91 seal."

So, there you have it.

there are certain words in the lexicon which eschew definition. These words are ambiguous thus giving the speaker (or writer) vast contextual leeway. We see this phenomena with swear words, slang, and words which have been intentionally altered to be reclaimed by specific groups.

Nite, niteing, nited, et al is one such word. While originally coined by a single person, it quickly permeated our language by its rapid adoption by others. The adopters are not homogeneous; they can be found in all socio economic strata, schooling and education, and even among the serious and the comedic alike. While there remain steadfast adherents to a single definition, it is more widely accepted to mean whatever you wish it to mean.

I hope you have found my reply niteable.

So you're saying it's like "Cree" (however you spell it) from Stargate.
Any Stargate fans will immediately understand.

Has anyone checked on Doug lately? Haven’t seen him around much since he started that fateful thread....

Here's what I need clarification on. Do only Negavols need to "nite their posts or not post" or does this apply to everyone?

It was pure gold Jerry - and Vol Nation is not a group that will let something like that slip quietly by :) - may land in the lexicon of many future Vol Nation threads - much like "pocket presents" and a few other classics. Anyone who posts under the heading Doug Atkins is, I am sure, someone's nice little grandpa - but not sure I or anyone else needed his lecturing, and other than Doug, we were all scratching our collective heads at just what he meant.

Nite is sometimes used as a replacement for Night.
I took it to mean something like "put your post in the dark" or repudiate your earlier post.
"I've seen the light and I reject my past negativity."
I could be completely wrong though.

Mr. Atkins knows.

He's not talking, though.

You know how sometimes you drink one too many fifths of Jack, then you have to spend a week with your kids using the car battery to shock you awake every morning, and you mostly just sit around on the back porch listening to the wildcats fighting up in the hills, trying to get your head right?

We figure that's what Doug is doing right now.

He may come back soon to define it for us. Then again, he may come back and completely ignore all the excitement that has arisen around his famed post.

We'll just have to wait and see.

Go Vols!

Then let's hope, for his sake, that he doesn't have to go back to the dark side to remember what he meant.
