I think your right. Used to be:
Center 50
Guard 60
Tackle 70
End 80
Since players played both sides of the ball that translated to defense. DT's were 70's, DE's were 80's. The Guards tended to be smaller because they pulled alot in those days, so they would be Line Backers on defense.
Good point. If Boo were to keep #23 for his entire career, that number could be retired. (I hope he plays well enough that it would be a consideration). But you could never retire a single-digit number. If you retired #1 it would kill recruiting, because every kid wants to be #1. Fortunately...
Ok I’ll go in a different direction. Any cool numbers? That maybe remind you of any former Vols? I’m always excited when the jersey numbers come out because it means football season will be here soon!
First thread start ever for me. Jersey numbers are officially posted for the fall season. All of the single-digit numbers are duplicated. Including the magic number “0”. I don’t think we have a starter on defense with a number higher than 29. Does this bother anyone else, or is it just me...
Should someone start a thread about the new jersey numbers? Every single digit number is duplicate, including zero. Not a single defensive starter with a number higher than 20.
And these annoying kids are playing on my front lawn again…
Even better. Josephs will play a lot at SDE which gets us more Jordan Ross and allows Bailey and West to play inside. I agree less depth than last year, but do we really need a full 3-deep at every position on the DL? I think the DL will be just as good as last year.
Yve Pons took a long time to get in the swing of things. Maybe a better comparison?
Santi was our only option at point guard when he arrived. So he had to play, good or bad. I would say mainly good, but that year was the worst team we’ve had under Barnes.
He was supposed to replace Travis Hunter. So he must be better than Travis Hunter, i.e. a top 2 pick. Not sure why some of y'all can't follow the logic.
Great read. I enjoyed catching up with our old players.
Since this is the Jakobe Thomas thread. I was reminded how many DB’s have transferred. Guys like Denieko Slaughter, Brandon Turnage, Wesley Walker, DeShawn Rucker. So many of them went from being back-up / rotational players here to...
They dont have to “funnel” the money. Just tell the boosters, instead of buying us a fancy new weight room, will you buy us a couple offensive lineman?
No one has mentioned that he started every game for App State in 2023 and 2024. That experience has to count for something, considering we have zero starts amongst the QB’s on our roster.
