    Trade Wars and Tariffs

Ok, then by your logic the bragging by Trump that the tariffs would help reduce the debt was always utter b.s. and those who defended it are idiots. Correct?

    Trade Wars and Tariffs

No, everyone should pay towards debt reduction. But it should be transparent. If they end up taxing one segment too heavily, that segment votes those in power out, and it balances over time.

I think that in principle its a good thing that tarrif $ could be used to reduce the debt. My complaint is in dressing up what amounts to a tax increase for that purpose into something else. Just call it what it is. Say we are increasing taxes to pay off the debt. Then be accountable.

Sure, and this has been talked about at length. There are other ways to do this. I don't think, however, that he can retroactively reach back and "check the right box" and have the Treasury keep the money. Not that he won't try.

Got to think it through but certainly Trump will promote that even more. Probably get some mention in the SOTU.

    Trade Wars and Tariffs

Interesting issue is whether the companies that upped their prices to pay for the tariffs, thereby passing them on to the consumers, get to keep the refunds. I cannot think of a mechanism that forces them to pay it back to the consumers. We all got taxed. The companies now get the windfall...
