New F.D.A. Nutrition Labels Would Make ‘Serving Sizes’ Reflect Actual Servings

The Food and Drug Administration for the first time in two decades will propose major changes to nutrition labels on food packages, putting calorie counts in large type and adjusting portion sizes to reflect how much Americans actually eat.

It would be the first significant redrawing of the nutrition information on food labels since the federal government started requiring them in the early 1990s. Those labels were based on eating habits and nutrition data from the 1970s and ’80s, before portion sizes expanded significantly, and federal health officials argued that the changes were needed to bring labels into step with the reality of the modern American diet.
. . .
The proposed changes include what experts say will be a particularly controversial item: a separate line for sugars that are manufactured and added to food, substances that many public health experts say have contributed substantially to the obesity problem in this country. The food industry has argued against similar suggestions in the past.

forcing change for the sake of change is stupid and wasteful. Besides, the labels still require math and we all know how the education system is doing these days

At least they use the metric system.

It amazes me that America still uses an Imperial system.

Is Murica too dumb to learn the metric?

I'd rather not.

Also heard the other day now they want to remove advertising for thing like soft drinks from schools. Like a freaking coke sign over a football score board.

America actually does use the metric system; especially in industrial and commercial applications - we still tend to express it in imperial format, however.

govt regs run amok? Someone having to justify their govt paycheck thought this one up

Seems like a stretch...when has anyone ever had to justify their government paycheck.

No, I realize that but by and large outside of industry and science we don't. The average person couldn't tell you how a kilometer relates to a mile etc..

very true - you can thank our government (and our beef with France in the 1800's) for this.

When you combine the ACA, this labeling change, Let's Move, the gardening, school lunch upgrades, etc., the Obama administration has arguably done more to improve the health of Americans than any administration in recent history.

Do you think the average European could? I've worked closely with German engineers and they couldn't without using conversion apps on their phones.

Top Gear (UK) expresses speed in imperial measurement, if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for all.

I only know it because I was a runner and my mom was a math teacher. I didn't really have a chance

This is evil. They FDA, via their influence from the USDA, is clearly trying to make the consumer think that as long as. it isn't "added" sugar, its - ok when everything all the non-fiber carbs are the worst thing on that label. Your body doesn't really care if where the carb came from.

How about some useful information like the actual caffeine content or the level of free-form glutamate.
