Basilio Said It Best

EXACTLY

It took 4 reported turn downs from other coaches(which probably means 7-8 offers were thrown out) off the top of my head before Jones was hired.

I hate to think what #8 would look like for the basketball job.

I would be the #9 hire so #8 isn't good at all haha

The list of the "Best" college coaches is, imho, Coach K, Bill Self, Tom Izzo, Roy Williams, Rick Pitino, John Calipari, and Billy Donovan. I think they are the "best". Now we all know that none of them are leaving their current jobs for UT.

Then we could go great coaches, who MIGHT be better hires than CBP. In no order, Tom Crean, Jamie Dixon, Gregg Marshall, Fred Hoiberg, Buzz Williams, Shaka smart, Brad Stevens, John Beilein, Thad Matta. Again, I don't see any of these guys leaving their jobs for UT, in fact, allegedly, a few of them turned UT down last time.

Then I think we have CBP. He is a proven commodity.

After him, I keep reading guys like Lawrence Frank, Rick Byrd, Mick Cronin, Richard Pitino...etc. I believe that CBP is the "best" available. Not saying that others shouldn't get a look. But, CBP will end up coaching somewhere, and I'd hate for our next hire to be another flop, when CBP could have been hired.

Again just my opinion, I'm by far more in tune with football. Most of my BBall knowledge is gained from reading various forums and articles.

Why is that surprising? If you didn't want Pearl rehired before, the fact that Cuonzo sucks shouldn't change anything.

You need to go to sarcasm school. You take about every post on this site too seriously. Really. Lighten up, Francis.

The Deon Thomas thing? He didn't commit a violation there. He tried to bring one to light. Did he poke his nose where it don't belong maybe, but other than pissing off Ill. how is that a strike against him?

It's not. They just like to use it against Pearl.

You know better than to use logic, most on this site can't understand it, it's like a foreign language to them.

The problem I have with that proven commodity though is that part of what he's proven is a propensity to do ill advised things.

Also, what do you do if you need a coach this year, but Pearl can't even work until August?

You comsider Pearl for about 30 seconds. Then you realize it's program suicide when he gets loose with the NCAA again and you have to look elsewhere.

I really do understand why people would want him back, but from a realistic standpoint, I just don't think you can let that happen if you're in the administration of the school that his actions caused turmoil in in the first place. I just don't think we have to roll the dice on the downside of Pearl to achieve results that we want.

Hiring coaches like Wade Houston, Buzz Peterson, and Cuonzo Martin were program suicide. The NCAA is now a shell of what is was 3 years ago and Pearl's punishment did not fit the crime. Pearl will either be coaching for or against UT next season.

The thought of facing Pearl on the opposite bench Just doesn't bother me. Just is what it is.

YES SIR! It's not Pearl or nothing....we need to see whats out there and there is plenty!

Yeah! I can't wait till another three years have passed and we are wanting another coaching search. We have the best coach we have ever had sitting here in our backyard, but rather than say we were wrong three years ago let's send him down to Bama and have them kicking our butts in both football and basketball. Now that makes sense, doesn't it.

The Nike money isn't what I would consider a big reason why we decide to get rid of him. It's the fact that he will have to get an extension if he isn't fired. He has to. A college coach cannot coach with one year left. I think Hart's decision not to extend him last year ends up helping him make the decision to fire him. May not have been that big at the time, but it was. JMO.

2 things:

1. He is petitioning the NCAA to shorten his penalty to end in March iirc.

2. The season doesn't start until November, he can coach his team before then, just couldn't recruit.

Wait until Pearl shows up at at TBA in a Bama red sports coat with his new red team and beats Martin (or whatever hack that gets the job) until the faces of Vol fans are red enough to match Pearl's red coat! If that doesn't bother you, then nothing will.

I agree. If Pearl is rehired and screws up again, several people would lose their job and Tennessee basketball (and possible athletics in general) would be ruined. I would imagine Cheek Hart and others would lose thier job and that could affect any athletic program with the UT name.

There is so many good coaches out there.......

God yes and we have hired so many of them. Can't wait to count again all the elite eight banners again the men's team have put in the rafters at TBA.

Right. Getting smacked around next year will suck no matter who is on the opposite bench. It wouldn't bother me either if we had a great coach sitting on our bench.

I am a huge Pearl fan and would love to see him back at UT. But, if for whatever reason we can't get him I hope the AD gives Rick Byrd from Belmont a look. It seems like his teams are winning close to the 30 games every year. And his teams play really well on the road. In the past few years I have seen his teams play UT very well and I believe they beat UNC on the road and last year Duke just barely inched by them. I am shocked nobody has snatched him up from Belmont.

Agree but not so sure he would leave Belmont now for any job. I think he was ready to come to UT 3 years ago.
