The Bruce Pearl Thread

Would you be for Bruce Pearl's return if Martin is fired after next year?

If you are truly a student, wait until you get out in the real world. We all have multiple tasks to perform and cases to handle for jobs. It is the job of an AD to hire a coach.

I've said along BB is a back seat rider at TN.
Think they'll let Martin ride one more, no matter what.

What more can Hart do besides hire a coach? The rest is out of his hands.

Do the coaches not directly report to him? Does he not have expressed expectations of the programs and the coaches? I'd think he has many tasks and functions to perform but he is the ultimate head of the programs.

Why is Pearl gone forever? Sports for the university is all about butts in the seat and eyes on t.v. Pearl would bring that back, and if the boosters got behind Pearl you're kidding yourself if you think that couldn't happen. I wish the best for Martin but it's time we get our guy back at the helm! I will put his name out everywhere I can. Yeah I'm one fan I get it, but I can try to get Bruce back on as many message boards, e-mails, you tube, etc. as I can

The team has been very profitable even with Cuonzo at the helm...don't get your hopes up that Bruce is the only man for the gig. Its a business and there's plenty of fresh blood out there not Bruce Pearl who could be an option...we just choose to ignore them.

The basketball program and athletics as a whole are not very profitable right now. With the exception of the Florida game TBA has looked like a ghost town the last several games.

Still think it makes more financial sense to fire Cuonzo. Buyout is only $1.6 million. It drops to around $800k next spring. If you think you'll do it next year, the extra cost to do it now is only $800k. How much does fan apathy cost in the long run? How much does it cost to let a recruiting class get swallowed up by a lame duck coach?

The ticket sales loss alone is over $2 million, makes no sense financially to retain him just to fire him. Like I said the other day, if Hart doesn't make a move after the year that tells me Hart thinks deep down that Martin can get it done here.

Football should be first priority from an AD standpoint at least, it's the money maker. Football helps pay for all the little sports we don't discuss here on Volnation.

Not only that, but I think you have to extend him if you bring him back. If not, then you are just setting him up for failure, and basically telling him that he is our coach for a year to reduce the buyout. You can't operate like that. It would be miserable for recruiting and set the program back another year or more. Either fire or extend.

Yep. Kind of at a crossroad.

Personally, I think it's a no-brainer for Hart to fight to get Pearl back. He'll automatically be a hero in the eyes of Vol fans. If Pearl comes back and gets back to winning like he was, then we all win. If Pearl comes back and for whatever reason never gets his "mojo" back, then it's not like UT fans are going to be mad. The attitude would be "hey it was worth a shot."

So does men's basketball. The rest of the sports lose money.

Yeah but the football team brings in a lot more revenue than the basketball team. This is basically exactly what I said. Football makes somewhere around $35 mill a year in profits, and basketball probably makes around $7 mill. Based on numbers I've seen.

Not often can an AD make a hire that's win/win, good point.
