We're Weak

To take nothing away from Jaccques, 565 lbs is the cutoff on bench. Albert Toeaina could rep this 3 times while at UT.

Edit: Benching 565 is unGodly for a human being

That might be true (which would be amazing on Toeaina's part) but I have seen nothing that would indicate that. Everything I've found on the subject states that McClendon is now the sole owner of the heaviest weight ever benched by a UT OL, hence the use of the word "record". Are you privy to something the rest aren't saying? Also, in case you know, who holds the actual "all position" bench record? This only specifically refers to OL so it might be a DL. I know Darwin Walker was hoisting some serious weight while here.

The problem is not individual strength, it is the fact that we have a real lack of depth on the defensive line. Until that is fixed, we will be sucking wind in the second half.

I think this may be a good observation.

yes, mathematically, we have a chance to win the East. Im not disputing that. What I want to ask you is do you think realistically we will?
at this point, yes, it's realistic. we're currently no. 1 in the East, with the easiest, supposedly, part of our schedule left. it can't set up any better than it has this year, given how it's gone. if we don't get to ATL now........ cause it's basically been handed to us on a sliver platter despite all the shortcomings.
I think that the "Weak vs. Strong" debate is really chalked up to quality of talent and depth. We went round and round about the strength and conditioning program article before the Georgia game, and I think the entire discussion was a red herring. The real difference between the program in the mid to late 90's and now are the number of superhuman athletes.

The problem is not individual strength, it is the fact that we have a real lack of depth on the defensive line. Until that is fixed, we will be sucking wind in the second half.
agree 100%.

i honestly have no idea what to say about the rest of the season. we could lose another game, sure. but hell, the way the season has gone so far, so could FL, so could GA, so could SC. each of us has games left on the schedule that have throw up ??? given how this season has gone. and we still wind up in the title game. whacky season to say the least.

we got KY and ARK
FL has SC
GA has Aub and KY
SC has ARK and FL
KY has TN and GA

i'm leaving out Vandy....for now.

I think that win over SC, is going to bring a little swagger back to Tennessee.

Just think back to last year and '05 when teams came back on us, and we didn't respond and lost.

All we need to do is recapture that winning attitude, and beating a Spurrier team is a great way to do that.

It wasn't too long ago that winning out in Nov against Vandy, KY and Arky was a gimmme.

The games are going to be tough, but we should win out.

Does this Rex fellow EVER say anything positive about Tennessee?

From Houston eh, I wonder if he has the wrong UT in mind.

I'm not so sure about the premise of this statement being factual. Strength, in and of itself, does not guarantee football prowess any more than speed does. Being very strong (or fast) is a great asset but there have been many sprinters and "weight room warriors" that haven't done well on the football field. I think that is the case here. In fact, the strength part of our program seems to be doing quite well. Consider:

Jacques McClendon set a new OL bench record at 565 lb.

Nick Reveiz power cleaned 362, a new LB record.

Luke Stocker set a new TE squat record at 525.

Ja'Kouri Williams set the WR bench record at 415.

Heck, even our new kicker Lincoln set the power clean mark for kickers at 300 lbs.

I've also included a link to a John Adams article that addresses this issue.

these types of records are for football yesteryear. football today is about explosiveness and we don't appear to be developing a lot of it. I don't care if every WR on our team can bench 550, it ain't helping us a bit.

Im positive that I am a Tennessee alum. Im positive that some of the best days of my life were spent on the Hill. Im positive that your fanship does not rival mine. Im positive that my blood runs orange. Im also positive that Tennessee fans derserve better than we're getting from Phil Fulmer. Any more questions?

I'll ask and find out about Darwin Walker.

Jacques repped 565 more times that Toeaina, thus giving him the record, which is insane if you think about it.

I alluded the same sentiment in that original post when referring to sprinters and "weight room warriors". The original post of this thread seemed to question the UT strength program. There are issues with this team but evidence does not seem to support that our strength program is the problem.

Brother, I have enough trouble wrapping my head around squatting 565. Repping benches with that weight just knots my head up.
