The Official NASCAR Talk Thread

On second hand, this is really stupid. So Jimmie Johnson can go win all of the first 35 races, but if he DNF's the last race, he is out? That seems to reward pure luck instead of consistent work.

Wouldn't even have to have a DNF. Someone could technically win the first 35 races and finish 2nd at Homestead and not win the championship.

Maybe just me but from what I understand of it. I kinda like it?

The one thing I would change is make the Final 4 over a two race run and not just Homestead.

Yeah but in that situation, you would have to consider the races before the chase as qualifying races for the chase rather than standard rounds. A team can go 18-0 in the NFL and slip up at the Superbowl. It is the name of the game.

I really wish their was a driver's union where they could bargain against dumb crap like this.

I would be okay if they reset the points in the chase halfway through. But to make one race to decide it all is a joke.

I hate the idea of having one race decide a championship. That makes the other 35 races a complete waste.

Which is pretty much the reason I don't like the NFL. It's system just rewards the teams who get hot in January and basically renders the regular season meaningless. The streak will end tonight, but it's been 9 years since the best team in the NFL won a championship.

I've found myself gravitating more and more towards sports that actually reward the best teams with titles. Soccer actually has the best way of crowning a champ, but the best of 7 playoffs the NBA uses is pretty fail-safe as well. College football used to almost always get it right too, but people couldn't stop complaining about it so they've sold their soul (and their regular season) to the devil and gone to a single elimination playoff.

NASCAR isn't the NFL.

Correct, but it is as much about the drama and show as the NFL.

True, but you know racing is very different from football. Would it be fair if they changed up the 24 hours of LeMans so that after the first 23 hours they stop the race, then put everyone on the same lap, and have a one hour sprint?

With 36 races and 43 competitors winning is super difficult, and it should be handsomely rewarded, BUT we have to reward consistent results throughout the season.

I did hear an interesting suggestion from the most unlikely of sources in PTI's Tony Kornheiser. He said he would like to watch a 50 mile sprint with ONLY the 4 final contenders. I think that would be a hoot! Maybe make the distance a bit longer, perhaps 100-125 miles, so you can have an hour or so of great racing. The teams would not go for it, nor would the sponsors, but it would be fun.

But the difference is that the races leading up to the chase decide who gets into the playoffs.... Le Mans is a stand alone race.

Ultimately I don't mind either way. The only thing I think needs changing is the amount of points. I am not so keen on having hundreds of points....

Bk Racing isn't worth much, but I can't wait to see this.

Eight guys running for rookie of the year, although only one of them is in solid equipment. Sadly, we still have to see guys like David Ragan and David Gilliland on the track. It's also sad to see the Terry Labontes and Bobby Labontes of the world clinging onto their racing careers in subpar equipment. Let it go, guys.

Eventually you're going to melt down, and it'll be epic.
