To me it was fair game as she willingly posed. I guess UT and TV had a duty to keep it off camera and not allow children to see it. Students held them up as he shot FT's.

He admitted that he said something that he now regrets. Hell, that could be nothing more than, "Hey Marcus, try not to take it out on the chairs this time".

I imagine that after having his face blasted across national news, he would preemptively issue an apology for anything he said. It is obvious he said something derogatory to Smart, so he is apologizing for doing so. Whether or not he said anything "really bad", however, is known by about five persons (him, his wife, some other fans right there, and Marcus Smart).

You are asserting that it is impossible that is what he said? Him saying that...not in the range of possibilities? You must have been there and heard what he said, then. What did he say?

I believe you're taking this too far. Calling someone a ****** to their face in no way leads to a stagnant, innovatively lacking society (I understand that's not directly what you're implying). But you're attempting to use the ideal of suppressing meaningful rhetoric and it's consequences to justify, in essence "slander" (note the quotations to discern it from the legal definition).

What is meaningful rhetoric? I suggest a reading of Mill's On Liberty to understand that suppressing slander entails suppressing what you probably man by meaningful rhetoric.

Being called the n-word is a really crappy situation. If you go to fisticuffs on you are only feeding the behavior they expected and likely hoped for.

If you walk away, you feel like a punk and weak.

Both times it's happened to me I've walked, partially out of shock. Both times I somewhat regret not confronting the person physically. I know that it would never end well though.

Good on you for walking away. It's not weakness.

As for what Smart was called, now Orr is on record as saying he called Smart a "piece of crap".

I am still amazed that confrontations between fans and players aren't more common in basketball. The fans are super close, and they say some really mean stuff. You can't go hitting fans though. However as a fan, why should you be surprised if you get hit for saying something to a player that would certainly get you hit in a bar?
