What concerns me about Mason is that he is the respected guru in the industry at stopping the spread offense... the very offense Butch is installing at UT!

He also runs the 3-4, which Vandy is years away from having the personnel for. They also lost ACS, Boyd, and Matthews. Next season is going to be very rough for them.

Mason and his staff are going to try to get as many wins in the next two years as possible before that class truly leaves a gaping hole in the roster. Then they'll jump ship and Vandy will be screwed.

I have a feeling Mason will regret going to Vandy. This recruiting class is almost a deathblow.

If Vandy gives him at least four years, he might have a chance at fielding a decent team.

The only problem with that is that the rest of the East is on the way up as well.

Missouri has shown it can compete (even though it was a down year in the East). They should be at least a perennial mid-pack East team.

South Carolina will be good as long as Spurrier cares to stay. Heck, they might even luck into a decent coach once he's gone.

Georgia will always be at least decent and are usually competing for the East Title.

Florida has too much talent to be down for long. If Muschamp doesn't get things right, they'll find a good coach who will.

Even Kentucky has a pretty good recruiting class on the line. If stoops can keep it together and show any semblance of decent coaching, they'll be able to give ole Vandy fits.

Ole Miss, Vandy's permanent Western foe, is also on the way up and looking to be out of Vandy's reach already.

We all know what's going on at Tennessee this year. They could drop every player left on the board and still have a better recruiting class with what they've already pulled in--by a mile.

Not only did Jimmy Frank leave just before the proverbial hurricane season, he cut the anchor rope and left the boiler room burning.

They have 23 redshirts they'll have you know . The east is theirs for the taking.
These 23 redshirts will also ease the pain of underwhelming class they will sign this year.:loco:

In case anyone was wondering this is Vandy's new DC.

David Kotulski - GoStanford.com

He was ILB coach at Stanford last two years. Previous to that he was Lehigh's DC for 6 years and before that stops at Holy Cross, St. Mary's, Bucknell and Utah in his 35 years of coaching.

Vandy has the whole "proof that recruiting rankings don't matter" thread going on over there. Apparently they redshirted the best recruiting class in the country this past year because they are completely convinced they are going to be awesome. They may be getting another commitment from a WR from North Gwinnett. He has offers from App St, Furman, MTSU, Kent and Air Force. He does have one from Mizzou however and they are convinced this makes him a top prospect.

They may end up with one of the lowest ranked recruiting classes in the SEC in several years.

Wouldn't you think that some of these recruits would want to go because of guaranteed playing time and the education? It's just getting weird at this point.

I guess it's like all the good players wanting in on a top-5 recruiting class.

Except, you know, the opposite of that.

No - they are just screwed period - look at Tenn. when coaches left or were fired and the resultant fallout in those recruiting classes. You wiff on a class in the SEC and it takes forever to catch up. Mason has stepped in a huge pile of crap - and it will be on his shoes for years.

Heck there were years where we lost assistants and kept the head coach and we still sunk dramatically. I don't like Mason's chances. Perhaps after one year - his dream job will open up on the West Coast and he will quit - that's always good for the health of the program. :)

Mason's doing it for the money and to build a resume. Vandy will keep him around if he gives them a .500 season and a bowl every third or fourth year anyway. With the dumbing down of their schedule they just need one other SEC win besides Kentucky every few years.
