Strong to Texas

Word is that former UK head coach Joker Phillips is a finalist for OC at Texas.

1.Players will attend all of their classes and sit in the front two rows of all of their classes. GAs, academic folks, position coaches will be checking constantly now.
2.No headphones in class. No texting in class. Sit up and take notes.
3.If a player misses a class, he runs until it hurts. If he misses two classes, his entire position unit runs. If he misses three, the position coach runs. The position coaches don't want to run.
4.No earrings in the football building. No drugs. No stealing. No guns. Treat women with respect.
5.Players may not live off campus anymore, unless they're a senior who hits certain academic standards. The University will buy out the leases for every player currently living off campus and put them in the athletic dorm.
6.The team will all live together, eat together, suffer together, and hang out together. They will become a true team and learn to impose accountability on each other. The cliques are over. 7.There's no time for a rebuild. "I don't have time for that." The expectation is that Texas wins now.
8.Players will learn that they would rather practice than milk a minor injury.
9.The focus is on winning and graduating. Anything extraneous to that is a distraction and will be stamped out or removed. 10.Strong met individually with seniors and key leaders and re-emphasized that the plan is to win now. They can lead the new culture or be run over by it.
11."I don't want to talk about things. I'd rather do things. We just talked. Now it's time to do."

All good stuff. We'll see how it works out for him.

How is this allowable under the NCAA? If the player signed a lease and the school is buying out the lease that is a financial benefit - forgiveness of a debt essentially.

Another article says players get a stipend for rent, and many of their players live off campus, because it's cheaper. so they pocket the difference. I guess it's legal, or they wouldn't publish it.

The statements of them having better talent than say Baylor and OSU is frankly antequated thinking. The rising of younger agressive coaches and more parity in college football with the 85 rule has evened the playing field. These factors combined with many teams investing more in football so they can get their share of the revenue is what is causing the rise of these other previously noncompetitive programs, ie Vandy.

Both UT's struggle with the similar problems and many traditional powerhouses are now having to adjust their paradigms to remain relevant.

I do agree with Red and would not have hired Strong. Most certainly would have delved into the pro ranks as the job has more similarities. I will be shocked if Strong can weather the storm there if things go poorly and Texas talent has very frequently been misjudged by recruiting.

Granted, recruiting rankings aren't everything but on paper Texas is lightyears ahead of OSU and Baylor in "talent". The difference is how you develop that talent, which Briles and especially Gundy, have proven they're great at. If CCS can get Texas back to winning, they will still have first pick of the litter in TX and there's no way he won't snag a few from Broward and Dade County. If he can convince a SoFL kid to move to Louisville, surely he can convince them to come to Austin.

Good luck on the recruiting trail Charlie. With those rules in place you're going to need it.

Texas 2014 Schedule:

UNT -Home (win)
BYU-Home ( tossup)
UCLA-Arlington (loss) (preseason #14)
Kansas -Away (win)
Baylor-Home (loss) (preseason #8)
OU-Cotton bowl (loss) (preseason #7)
Iowa St-Home (win)
K State-Away loss
Tx Tech-Away (tossup...always plays Texas tough at home)
WVU-Home (win)
OSU-Away (loss) (preseason rank #12)
TCU-Home (tossup)

If this happens, Red MC Combs will buy up billboards to say " I told you so..."

I'm really starting to like this Charlie Strong guy:

Sam Khan Jr. @skhanjr 21m Confirmed via a source that 4-star DB John Bonney, a #Longhorns commit, is officially visiting #Baylor this weekend. Football Recruiting - John Bonney - Player Profiles - ESPN

I guess running off the best DB coach in the country, Duane Akina, doesn't heip the cause.

Hope this heavy Longhorn lean doesn't like the changes in Austin:

:17 PM -22 Jan 2014 RB Soso Jamabo (1/21): Will be attending this weekend's first Junior Day in Waco. Is the #1 running back in the country for 2015 according to 247Sports. HAS OFFER.

Strong will finish off the destruction Mack started. Horrible hire by UTjr. Love it.

If it doesn't work out he can always come back to Gainesville.

"Not so fast, my friend". Mack got 15 years in Austin and so should Charlie. We won't kill him with fire, we'll tickle him with a feather duster (he'll like it too).

I'm Sam Houston State and I approve of this message.

One of their top commits just committed to A&M. Rip Texas football. Even Dooley landed players in his first few weeks.
