Utah State

Jones did make an announcement about it after Peterman was hurt and didn't make an announcement of anything different.

Huh?? The point is no announcement needed to be made. How he handled the roster/traveling squad with regards to which QB traveled and which didn't told anyone paying attention who was 3rd and who was 4th.

Sorry but that's an absolute cop out and completely false. Dooley wasn't a very good HC but many of the coaches who worked for him were just as good as the ones on this staff if not better.

And YES.... as in YES... you should be able to see some impact from the coaches IMMEDIATELY if they are good. That doesn't fix everything but again absolutely NO ONE here has demanded that. What we have criticized this staff for is not fixing much of anything or accomplishing even minimal goals.

What were people here saying before the season? Some were saying, "six wins and a bowl" will prove we are on the right track. Others didn't even have that much courage. They just said "be competitive". The staff accomplished NEITHER. Others minimized it even more and said they'd be happy if there was discernible improvement over the course of the season. THAT didn't happen either.

I am not making a final conclusion. I hope as much as you do that this is all part of some grand "process" that will show improvement next fall. But their "coaching ability" relative to the competition in the SEC is DEFINITELY very MUCH in question.

Are you serious? They beat a ranked opponent, something we hadn't done since 2007. Our special teams were vastly improved. When was the last time we blocked a punt? The last one I remember was 2007 against Georgia. The job they did with Palardy, both place kicking and punting, was extraordinary. We rushed for more yards than any Tennessee team since 2004. Turnovers were improved, and for the first time in years, our teams came out and competed hard. I saw that whenever they played, and I haven't seen that in a Tennessee team since at least Kiffin.

Just the fact they beat a ranked team shows improvement. That was a goal that was met. I wish the team did better, but none of us expected for Auburn, Missouri, and even Vanderbilt to be as good as they were. Overall I think that our defense was improved, our offense played as well as the experience allowed it too, and our special teams were so much more improved. If you didn't see that you are blind.

All I know is it's gonna be a long 8 months until football season. I wonder how many qb threads we'll see before the season.

It's really unfortunate to have to open the year in 2014 against them. They are a good football team that knocked off NIU last night and pretty much shut down Lynch. Win, and it will be no big deal to anyone outside of Knoxville - you're supposed to win your home opener against a non conference team. Lose, and there will be a chernobyl like meltdown on VN and BJ will lose much of the fan base before the season even gets started.

Thoughts?

I hope he has them ready, but we are going to be very young next year. I see improvement later in the season, and a big improvement in 15, but next year may be tough. Hope they prove me wrong.

USU is a team that has a tendency to sneak up on people. They did it to Auburn a couple years ago and their game against Wisconsin is basically what got Gary Andersen that job. They've never finished those out of conference games (unless you include Utah a season or so ago), and we'll need to hope we aren't their first. It wouldn't surprise me if we have a very close game against them, but if the QB play is at all improved this off-season we should win. If the QBs play like this past season we may be looking at a loss.

I'm on your side but to say we haven't competed in years isn't true. We competed last year with SC, with UGA, even with Florida for most of the game. We showed up flat footed against Miss St but fought back on the second half.

We still got blown out several times this year just like last year. We still almost lost to a nobody (Troy & S Bama are comparable).

I think we've improved because as you said we pulled out a big upset and we matched last years record with far less talent on the offensive side of the ball. Only knock I have on this staff is they should've beaten Vandy.

I should have clarified that a little bit. I meant that they didn't quit when things didn't go their way, and competed for all four quarters. I didn't really see that all the time in during the Dooley years.

Need I remind you guys that before the 2013 season the consensus on VN was that a win over Auburn was almost a sure thing? How'd that work out?

Unfortunate for them IMO. I like Butcher and his staff and although young , I think we will be vastly improved .

While I doubt anyone on here predicted they would be in the NCG, I think most on here looked at their past recruiting numbers and knew it would be at best a toss up. The one that truly surprised me this year was Mizzou. I knew they'd be tough when healthy (see last year's game against UGA that was close all the way into the 4th) but they really turned a corner.

Yes, what a wacky year it was. Maybe 2015 or 16 will be our year after some of the younguns get a couple years under their belts. I think the future is bright. Seems like most things especially in sports are cyclical.

I'm not too worried. Utah St. is losing 7 starters on O, and 7 starters on D...FWIW

Been a loooong down cycle for UT. Damn I'm tired of waiting.

The Utah State game is no gimme. Not by a long shot. I don't know who will win and I would not be surprised if either team won. What I can guarantee you is that Utah State will have the best quarterback on the field and in college football that goes a long way.

May have been posted multiple times by now, but I believe Utah State will not be a factor. Yes, I agree we cannot over look them but I believe the new recruiting class will add some great depth/playmakers, as well as the hype that will push the team into the season opener. Furthermore, I think Utah State will get a cultural shock when they run out of that tunnel into Neyland Stadium and see 100,000+ Vol fans. All of that plus what they are losing for next year, makes me feel better about the outcome. Go Vols!
