Here's my 2 cents on the whole sin debate.
Are all sins equal in the eyes of humanity? No. Society doesn't dish out equal punishments for murders as they do someone that lies on their tax return (and gets caught).
Are all sins equal in the eyes of God? Yes. All sin takes us away from God and every sin is forgivable.
That's where the Grey/Gray morality of life comes in. To me there is no real Black or White or Good or Evil.
My mother is one of the nicest ladies you'll meet, her mother was arguably a modern day saint. Both of them truly feel interracial marriage is a sin and an abomination to god. I think that's a terrible closed minded thought in every way. They believe that way because the bible says so, and nothing else.
All sin is forgivable.
As in "no sin out weighs the glory of God."
All unforgiven sin will be punished.
As in "the wages of sin is death"
Its up to you to ask for forgiveness.
You see why it doesn't make sense.
If it had said "all forgivable sin is forgivable" and then went on about unforgivable sin, it would have made more sense. Then, that would bring up the question of forgivable vs unforgivable sin.
Then again, not believing in the face of no evidence, believing falsely, or believing in a false God/prophet are supposed unforgivable sins (regardless of Earthly deeds) but murder, mass murder, rape, theft, etc. are not only on equal footing with white lies but forgivable. Makes believing all the more difficult of a task for a skeptic.

You might not, but there are many Christians who feel that way.
They should read what Jesus said here.
I promise you that any of the sinful things you say or do can be forgiven, no matter how terrible those things are. But if you speak against the Holy Spirit, you can never be forgiven. That sin will be held against you forever. Mark 3:28-29 (CEV)
I think an interesting question about sin would be, "do you believe your preferred deity punishes sin, and if so do you believe it is punishes during or after life?"
One of the most interesting parts of the bible is the dramatic change in this aspect. In the Old Testament all sin was punished during life. Then in the New Testament the concept of hell and punishment during the after life emerges.
Choosing not to believe in god, in other words, exercising "free will", will get you a one way ticket to Hell.
Meanwhile, murdering and raping a kid will get you to heaven as long as you say you're sorry.
Seems logical.

My friend is Muslim and strongly believes in Jinns which are basically Muslim demons to an extent. He says, whenever you see one, you should say "bismallah" and they will go away. Then I asked him, what if they are not Muslim and they see a Jinn? He said he doesn't know. He says you have to be really religious for Jinns to come to you. He then told me stories about how Jinns will come into your room while you sleep an start doing things, even laying on you, and your body cannot move whatsoever. Then the premed student that I am investigated this, and came across the concept of sleep paralysis. Which if anyone want to google, fits the criteria of what my friend was talking about through a scientific explanation. I came to the realization that if someone was not exposed to the idea of Jinns or Demons(my friend is really religious), there is a much less likelihood of them going through vivid dreams involving demons in comparison to a priest.
Anecdote over
Relating to the conversation, I think the idea of sin at a global level is arbitrary.
