I guess my point is maybe a Josh Smith, Cody Blanc, or Jacob Carter would star for other schools. We use them as an excuse where as other programs may have them making 50 catches and gaining 800 yards a year.

If that's you point, its a bad one. Those guys wouldn't be star at any SEC school, ever, period.

Idiotic.

It's called confidence. Smith has lost his.

Isn't that something the coaches should be working with him on? Is that not part of "coaching"? It may also be in part that alot of times only 1 pass is thrown in a given players direction during a game. A player drops a pass, you go back to him so his confidence is not shaken. I'm going to guess he is making the plays in practice or he would not be on the field. Of course last night the coaches were not going to throw it to anyone. Our kicker converting a 4th and 19 seemed like a better idea to the staff than our starting QB throwing a 8 yard seam route to a TE. It is what it is I guess.

I struggle to understand why we need a top 2-3 type player at every position to be competitive. Why is it that other schools take WRs ranked in the 50's-60's and win? Mathews was a 2* recruit. At candy he is a star, at UT he would be another excuse. If the coaches need the top rated WR in the 2012, 2013, 2014 classes, and 2 top Jucos to field a good WR group, we have the wrong guys coaching them. JMO

Lmao dude it's clear Matthews was underrated and a major miss. He was good before Franklin. Smith is nowhere near his measurables. Not every two star is going to be Matthews and cobb

I would agree with 1 thing. At Tennessee they would not. It seems clear that unless the kid is rated #1 or #2 at his position out of HS, we can not win with them.

In 1 HS season he caught almost 100 balls and gained almost 2000 yards and 20+ TDs. All a sudden he can't catch a single pass. IMO, it comes down to coaching or lack there of. JMO

It's confidence. He doesn't have any right now.

If a guy can catch a ball, coaches aren't going to coach him out of that. You can catch or you can't.

He'll get out of this slump, but it's really frustrating watching him on the field.

You're making a big deal out of something that doesn't happen much. We are of course gonna get out fair share of highly rated WR, so that will come with hits and misses. Diamond and the roughs are good stories, but don't happen very often... We simply have missed a bunch the last few classes at the position.

Makes perfect sense. Our coaches can teach players how forget how to catch the ball. Not every freaking thing that happens during a game is the coaches fault. Most overused term in College Football is is outcoached.

Getting these players pumped and ready (including mentally) for the game is something the coaches should already know how to do and I think they do a pretty good job at it. The problem is that the players have to do their part as well. It is not fully on the coaching staff if Smith has lost his confidence and wont gain it back. The coaches can not do everything for him. It's a give and take system. I'll do my part and you have to do yours.

Finally, somebody that gets what happened on those plays. All these expert coaches on these forums killing the QB for other peoples mistakes. Any recruit that really understands the game will be comfortable coming here to play with Dobbs or as I predict, Ferguson as the next QB.

Definitely not all on the QB. There is lots of blame to go around. Remember when this OL was excellent at pass protection? What happened? I for one think our OL play gets better next year. As far as the WR's, remember, a lot of times the QB throws the ball before the receiver breaks or is in position. A lot of blame falls on them. Anyway, Saban went 6-6 his first year and lost to La. Monroe late in the year with more talent than us. As good as Saban is I think we can at least give Jones some slack this year. Next year I expect much more.

What they can do is drop his ass to the bottom of the depth chart. I don't care what the kid does in practice, we now have a season's worth of sample size to know that he simply cannot catch as pass on Saturdays...... Period.

I expect Butch will give us more IMO

Overcome? He's a contributor to it at this point.

You're so insightful.

Easily toughest Vol football schedule in 30+ years and its all Butch's fault.

Most preseason predictions had UT @ 5-7 or 6-6. None of those predictions had Auburn or Mizzou ranked, much less in the top 10.

Butch inherited the first group of incoming Vol seniors that have never had a winning record.

If you don't understand that the players that are here right now have become accustomed to losing then you are in denial or you simply want Butch to fail.

Nonetheless whatever happens with CBJ and his staff going forward your boy Kiffin ain't coming back.

Many of the incoming freshmen/Juco players will start next fall...we will be better whether you like it or not.

5* post. Agree 100%. UT football will come back. It's a matter of time. And the way Butch is recruiting, it will be sooner than later.
