NFL Network: Did Peyton Choke?

I was at a restaurant when this discussion came on the NFL Network a bit ago so the volume was down. Anyone who caught this, could you provide a summary?

I personally feel that he did not, so please don't shoot the messenger. I really just want to know. I was also surprised by Skip Bayless's and Steven A. Smith's comments that I heard today.

Peyton did everything humanly possible to win that game. If Eric Decker keeps control of the ball they score a TD on that play instead of a FG and Peyton marched them right down the field to the 2 until Hillman's fumble...turn both of those into TDs and Denver wins the game.

Not to mention he took them down into FG range to even set up the onside attempt.

None of the fumbles were his fault and there isn't much he can do about the strip sacks or deflection pick. He correctly diagnosed the Colts D gameplan although it took him longer than it usually does do the protection issues and the very (read: borderline dirty) tight coverage their corners and safeties were playing.

However, starting last week and carrying over into the Colts game, I don't think he's 100%. Something is bothering him, not sure what.

This is how I feel, but the discussion on TV (NFL Network) was no longer going on when I got home. I've seen mixed responses overall. IMO, he in no way deserves much blame (if any at all) for this one. Your analysis seems spot on to me. I just wanted to know if anyone did catch that on TV and could recap that segment. It's almost like the Broncos completely forgot how to play as well in the first half. I can't count how many times these "big" games have gone similarly for him.

WTF? He was the best player on that field. The D was terrible, special teams were bad, the RBs didn't do anything, and both his starting tackles were out. He was running for his life and his team completely let him down, but the passing game was still good enough to have the Broncos in it at the end. Yeah Manning had 2 turnovers, but neither are on him. He was blind-sided on both of them.

BTW, this was a classic Manning loss at Lucas Oil. Whoever Manning plays for is inevitably going to have a terrible D, it seems. Broncos can't stop anybody if they can't get to the QB (and they aren't doing that very well). That's pretty much how the Colts always were. Also, Broncos are like 3rd in the AFC in turnovers and they only have 3 picks. Yikes, that's a ****load of fumbles.

Who was the best?

I don't think he played his best in the first half but he did everything he could to get them back in the game. When they got it within one score and a defensive stop I thought he would win. Then the deflected INT.

Credit to the Colts defense, they got after him and slowed Merano down too.

I was kinda suggesting Luck was but an argument could be made Vontae Davis was. I agree, when they were only down 6 I though well here goes Peyton down the field to take a 1 point lead.

Why is it any time Peyton loses a game it's asked if he chocked? Good grief that annoys me, can he not just get beat?

Luck had his moments, his scrambles were his real highlights. He did wonderful work when presented with the short fields after the turnovers but when he was backed up he didn't drive the Colts and plus he had that awful, awful Euro-soccer dive.

Not to mention he missed Reggie on a wide open throw that ended up costing Wayne his season.

Modest numbers + all of the above...he looked good because his team won. If the Broncos had pulled off those two scores I mentioned above people would likely be saying Luck was nowhere near as effective as he should have been, blah blah blah.

He made 2 bad throws, neither cost them in the end (I know the Wayne throw cost him the rest of the season) Bey had at least 2 drops I can think of that would have helped his numbers. Peyton looked good and they lost. Luck had a good game, that could have been said even if they had lost because the Broncos would have had to hit at least 40 to win.

Yeah, you're right about that. I do agree with you that any time Peyton's team loses it's somehow always his fault.

The context of the game is this:

Luck couldn't drive the field to put the game away in the second half and also it should be pointed out...

A lot of ifs in your statement. So if we want to go there Bey had a drop inside the 2 that would have likely sealed it anyway.

I would be more upset with the defender (who also punched our center on an extra point and got a way with it) if I were you, the play was clearly over why in the hell would you go any where near a QB in that situation? Peyton would have got the same call.

Oh no, that I do agree. Vickerson got like 45 yards of personal fouls in that game by himself. Absolutely amazing.

Look, I like Luck. I like Peyton more. But I don't think you can say that either of the QBs outplayed the other...it was a total team win/loss thing.

To call that a choke is a horrible misuse of the word.

Besides in the end, it's one regular season game. It was big only because of the circumstances surrounding it, otherwise it was just a regular season game. It was hardly some huge season shaping game.

I can agree with that. From a Colts fan perspective it is a relief to see our 2nd year QB come in the place Peyton built and stand toe to toe with him. I like Peyton a ton and believe he did more for the Colts franchise than any other player could have.

Dropped picks don't count. Lol I understand what you are trying to say but it comes across as dismissing what Luck did. Neither QB played to their potential. Too the people say Luck couldn't move the ball late, didn't the Broncos have 8 or so.possessions with no first down? That being said, Manning had the better passing day, he looked like he was pressing a little early. He settled down and considering his oline couldn't block me had a good day. IMO But Luck had some good scrambles threw some good balls and had a couple wtf balls and played well considering the return of the saviour and Irsay causing a s**t storm.


But to the original question, no PM didn't choke and anyone who thinks he did is an idiot.

Edit: also the d didn't play terrible in the second half, they only gave up 13pts and had a big TO late. The offense did stall a lot. The first half they were terrible though, like turrible.

So Luck had no part in getting that lead?

Played bad enough to throw 1 pick? What does that even mean?

Luck has played 24 career NFL games, Manning probably well over 200 so if you want to say he made worse decisions (one bad pass does not mean he played worse) then that would not be anything to be ashamed of.
