Why everyone is so down on the VOL's defense? IMO they really haven't played that badly.

If you watch the games, they have held their own pretty well given the circumstances dealt to them.

I believe that if they had an offense that could at least stay on the field more than 3 plays per series (sometime 1 play ie. fumbles and picks), we would see the defense in a whole different light.

When they've played badly its usually bc they have been on the field for most of the half. Tend to agree to an extent.

IMO, because they couldn't stop UF's back-up qb who had never taken a meaningful snap before. Considering the week prior they faced the most dangerous DT qb in the country, they should have stuffed him...but didn't.

Next, factor in 2 Sunbelt teams moved the ball with relative ease and consistency against them.

Except our offense is actually ranked above our defense . Take away a couple of pick 6's and they're pretty even . Neither is nothing to brag about

What are they if you take out Oregon? Oregon would make 95% of all FBS teams look silly and hurt their defensive rankings. That's a short-sighted argument, IMO.

Edit: just looked it up. Tennessee's defense would rank 35th without the Oregon game.

Over the next 3 games to you see them improving on that 78th ranking?

About the same probably if you took out Austin Peay . Heck we played Oregon why would you take them out ?

You take out Oregon because they have the best offense by far. You can't say "take out Austin Peay" because everybody is playing Austin Peays. Not everybody is playing very prolific offenses.

Considering they are ranked 80th for allowing 410 yards per game, yes, absolutely. For them not to improve they would have to allow at least 410 yards over the next three games. Do you think that'll happen?

It is a domino effect for us. So far our poor offense has killed our depth depleted defense. Do I think our D is that bad when fresh? No. Although when our offense struggles to move the ball and goes with a few 3 and outs our D shows its colors of what we are. We are a D that is depleted of any quality depth.

And to state again, in case you missed my edit, without the Oregon game, we would be ranked 35th in the country. Our defense is leaps and bounds better than last year. I'm curious why people are upset as well.

They really looked good in the 2nd half against S. Alabama, barring the last play in the endzone.

Considering Sunbelt teams put up almost 400 against UT, then absolutely UGA, USC, and Bama will eclipse 410 yards.

If we could get our offense and defense to both show up in the same season double digit wins would be guaranteed...

We will see. You may be right, but I don't see it. This defense looks bad because they spend so much time on the field. Western Kentucky and South Alabama both put up big numbers in the second half. That wouldn't happen if we could keep the offense on the field. The offense will only get better.

An offense can put up decent numbers of they're given ample opportunities to do so.

I would say the extremely high % of 3rd down conversions against us is a major concern for most.

It is not an argument. That is our rank.

I personally think they are playing much improved considering the injuries.

Georgia will beat that number, but we should hold Bama and SC under. Sounds about right. We need to keep up with the turnovers.

Not GET better...LOOK better...Thats my point. If they have an offense on the field that can give them a rest and keep the opposing offense off the field, they don't look or play nearly as bad.

This all day long. Three and outs will kill a defense with little depth. Did everyone read how many plays AJ and Sapp were on the field for? The corners? Too many people get caught up on stats and have no wholistic view of a game.
