They seem like they have the lowest football IQ's. They almost never set the edge and leave room by collapsing inside for the qb to escape the pocket often. Especially Jacques Smith. Great physique, but his football IQ is low as heck!

We're just slow overall on defense. Mentally and physically.. They're going to have to purge a lot of these players from the system before it gets better.

I agree the previous coach just did not leave a lot of team speed on defense and it really shows when we play the elite teams.

Not only did the DEs not set the edge, the second level didn't contain either. Christian Harris allowed a TD that never should have happened.

I thought another big play late in the game was when we were down by 14 with 10 minutes to go and Florida had 3rd and 10 and Jaron Toney misses a tackle that would have forced Florida to punt.

what we need is a d-line full of #2 for florida.that dude has a motor.and he looks under sized.he can't weigh more than 285.reminds me of billy rattliffe that played at tennessee in the mid 90's.

I was at the game...actually AJ, Brewer and Sapp played well...most of the tackles were made by them...we had poor tackling and containment was bad...but some of that had to do with the Gators WR downfield blocking on our DBs and safeties. Coleman is still the weakest link in the DBackfield.

The Vols continue to have a problem stopping good teams on third and long...Florida hit every one of there big plays...that was killers to a chance to win.

Not slamming him just making a point of plays that need to be made and there were several other big plays that needed to be made. I do like that the players are in position to make plays unlike last year when they couldn't even line up.

That's where he'll play at the next level, if he makes it there. He is way to slow for a linebacker, always has been..
An no you're not the only one who has thought that. I've mentioned it several times and got ridiculed for it. Right up to the point when the RB or TE runs by him again..

His pass coverage skills are atrocious. I agree if he makes it to the next level he will have to play end. I think he is our best option at the MIKE right now is why he is still there.

I have watched out de's for several years closely because I coach that position. To say they are bad is an understatement. Physically they have okay tools, but they are either really dumb or are taught some new technique that nobody else in the world plays.

Pass Rushing
They Rush the whole man
This means that they try to bull straight through the guy. Instead of pressing the edge and getting the corner shortened, we try to run through the guy and we are small.
(Jacques actually had one decent speed rush but missed the qb and he ran for 45)
They do not understand lane integrity
When they rush upfield they abandon their lanes and chase at the wrong time. their positioning for a counter underneath versus a mobile qb isn't the same as a statue.
You can quickly counter move against a statue qb or one that is running away and trail, but against a really mobile guy an instant inside move when he is free otherwise in the pocket is a big scramble waiting to happen.

They don't seem to know if its run or pass before the play.
75% of the time a college fb player should know if its run or pass before the ball is snapped. we seem unsure and tentative.

They have non-aggressive hands
Decent linemen lock us up and we do little to nothing to get them off. We just try to run through the blocker.

Agree I swear every third down they crack down so far in the online u can't even see them. Really pathetic

You are right on all counts. They get sucked in more than a crumb to a vacuum cleaner. Damn can any of them just wall off their side by taking three steps straight ahead?

I agree 100%. We are very slow. But on the bright side, we got a talented young secondary. These guys are really gonna get better as the year goes on.

At this point play Latroy Lewis and develop him. Jacques Smith has 8 games left in his career and is not getting any better...

Are you implying that we actually have defensive ends????

If you are and we do, did any of them get on the field yesterday? Looked to me like we had no one making much more than a meager attempt at containment.

Nothing different from the OU game!!!!!!

The good that came out of the game is that there in no way our team can play any worse the rest of the year than they did for the first half yesterday. It will get better.

If I had to chose the player that has been the most disappointing since their arrival to UT (and there has been quite a few as of late),Smith has to be my pick. Looks like a body builder, speaks very intelligently, but seemingly just don't know football.
