A lot of teams would cut football and many other sports entirely. Maybe half of the 125 teams could afford to pay players what people are suggesting. Obviously you'd have to have equal pay regardless of where you went to school, so the smaller schools that don't have huge money couldn't foot the bill. The BCS conferences would probably be the only teams left in FBS, and not even all those teams could afford it.

Basically what you said, the big conferences split away. No decent player would go to a non paying school, so those wouldn't have a chance at being competitive. I'm not saying that's necessarily a horrible thing, just something to consider. Some people wouldn't have the stomach to effectively ax dozens of programs.

All good points but to say it is inevitable that half the programs would have to close up shop is to ignore the fact that all major sports in N. America have gone to a revenue-sharing model. Each of these sports did so to address unequal revenues throughout their leagues that threatened competitive balance, knowing that this balance was instrumental in the popularity of their sport. I see CFB making a similar conclusion

The ability to pay players rests in the ability to cut waste from the AD's of the schools involved as well as the NCAA and its myriad of compliance requirements as well as adding the increasing TV revenues, which go higher as the increased playoff teams format kicks in. Seriously, it is long past time for the top collegiate programs to break away as a separate division and not be shackled by the wannabes. Set reasonable criteria for participation as a lesser program to join the big boys to give a path for citizenship and get it done. They could even mandate one or two games a season to be played against the lower division for them to build a case for addition to the top.

FWIW IMO to use a baseball analogy, pay the players for their minor league development - since that is what they really are. If it is proven that they accept money outside of the rules, they should be immediately barred from participation permanently, the school penalized, and the coaching staff fired if it is proven they had knowledge. A big part of the AA rulebook and cheating go away. Spend the dollars on enforcement of that issue at AA level and in the schools.

Here is what we all hope for today:

1. OL: The offensive line looks Florida's defense right in the face and says, "We are better than you, and we ain't scared." They proceed to tear open Lanes in the trenches for...

2. Lane: Lane finally shows up on the big stage, after two years of finding his feet. He gets yards that aren't there, and puts in a gutsy performance, aided by...

3. Smith and North: Josh Smith got surprising separation last week, but had trouble catching the ball. That was an aberration. He has great hands, and gets to show them off today, becoming a dependable 3rd down target. North shows off big play ability and overpowers the FL secondary, receiving passes from...

4. Worley and Peterman: Worley will start, and I would guess, he does not finish. If he does, it has been a good day, if not, then maybe Peterman has a solid enough debut to prove...

5. The Worst is Behind Us:
Oregon was the bottom. You have seen the worst of these Vols, and while they will not win every game, you will not see them look worse than last week under Butch Jones. Oregon 2013 becomes a measuring stick for years to come to say, "look at how far we've come."

TN 20
FL 13

This thread is not based on realistic probabilities, but they are possibilities, and if they go our way... it's a great day to be a TN Vol.

To be accurate in these details its more than scholarships, you have to look at revenues and expenses of the whole athletic department. For example in 2009/2010 FSU had a revenue of 74 million and expenses were 75 million. Do you then force the kids to pay back the loss?

I'm actually trying to drop out of this debate having already attested to the fact that I am close minded but since you asked this question I'll reiterate my perspective. The reason FSU, imo, operated in the red and the reason most BCS programs operate in the red is because they pay the CEO's and assorted staffs as much as they can get away with. If you change the dynamics of the market this too will change. The stipend would be part of the scholarship therefore it would be honored before the grownups could make off with the leftover revenues. It's curious that you seem to suggest putting the loss of profit on the kids and seem to give all the greedy bastards presently hording the big bucks a pass.

I'm simply suggesting that this is going to come down to everyone taking a hard look at where the money generated by the performances of the athletes is now going and make some adjustments somewhat more favorable to the performers.

No, life long fan having to work today. So all of you drink for the ones that have to work. Here's to a win in the swamp!

Saw on the bottom line on espn where Tiny is rated the 3rd best Oline prospect behind someone from A&M and Cyrus (however you spell his last name) from bama.

Let me ask you a question. Do you think this is going to change? I mean do you think in the near future (<5 years) we will be paying athletes in college, particularly big money sport athletes?

I hate to pass up a good argument and you're a worthy devil's advocate (though I normally try to avoid the devil and his advocates :)) my motivation is simply because I see the money in collegiate athletics going to the pimps while the athletes are treated mostly like whores. I just think it's fundamentally unfair so I'll never be open minded enough to side with the pimps.

No, not in less than 5 years. The people who make the rules stand to lose a lot of money. That and title IX male this a 15 year or so process.

I think it'll take the equivalent of a strike by basketball and football players across multiple big time schools.

Look for byron moore and dontavis sapp among #vols 4 captains. Lots of chatter about 12 at QB.

Smokescreen, IMO.

70% chance Worley starts
29% Peterman starts.
1% Jones says, "screw it" and puts Neal, Lane and Summerhill in the backfield.

As a fan I'd rather watch the 1% over the 70%. I've seen enough of Worley to know what will happen if he's the starter today. We would stand a much better chance at winning running with the 3 back system.
