But the Vols are even more shorthanded this weekend. The Vols will be without tight ends Joseph Ayres and Alex Ellis. That leaves the tight end position to Brendan Downs and Woody Quinn and A.J. Branisel. Ayres is expected to be out a lengthy amount of time; Ellis is apparently multiple weeks away from a potential return.
The other offensive concern is in the slot position. Obviously, Devrin Young is out with the broken hand. There's also concern with Pig Howard who didn't practice with the team on Wednesday or Thursday. Also, Johnathon Johnson might not be 100-percent. He's been in a walking boot a couple of different days this week after apparently twisting an ankle in practice.
That would leave wide receiver turned defensive back turned back to receiver Vincent Dallas as the healthiest slot, and Dallas did indeed work with the second-team offense at times this week. Tennessee can ill afford to have any more injuries at the slot position. If there's an emergency situation, Cody Blanc could be someone the Vols' coaches look at in an spot role.
