Totally agree, but the only problem for Couch is they have paper proof that he took money...so he can just play the he said she said game everyone else plays.

... but if it is true that the NCAA cannot access that paper trail, as is claimed by Yahoo, then they cannot build a case. No one wants to talk, nor are they legally bound to, and they can't do anything based on what is posted online. I know some true gangstas in the hood who can photo shop someone's name onto a Western Union slip.

Not saying this is right, but I am just arguing about what the NCAA could legitimately do here.

It wouldn't surprise me that when Butch came on board, he sat down with each player to have a 'here's what I expect, is there anything I need to know about' type conversation. He would've granted amnesty for anything revealed at that point, but probably would've made clear that going forward the new standard applied. Anything not divulged under those terms that subsequently came to light must be treated as a new offense, and forces Butch into a most unenviable position. If character really matters, he has no choice but to drop the boom. Under such a scenario, the failure wasn't accepting money to feed a baby, it was in failing to admit that he had done so.

Purely speculation of course (a fine VN tradition)...but were I a head coach for a program I was trying to clean up, I would probably do something like that.

Why can the NCAA not access the paper trail? I missed that part.

They don't have the ability to seize anything or anyone. It's has to be given by choice. Of the people with the documents don't want to talk then the NCAA has nothing to base a punishment off of. Right now, the Yahoo! Article alone proves nothing. The backup documentation that they allegedly have, is the damning part that will be the glue to the case.

Yahoo won't send them the documents. They would have to do their own legwork to get the evidence. That's why it's doubtful that they even bother at this point.

Author has supposedly said he wasn't going to turn his info over to the ncaa

Yahoo is after the NCAA more than the schools/players. They are doing a good job because their investigative reporters are making a mockery of the NCAA's enforcement staff.

Yep, they do some of the best investigative journalism in the business.

They are not doing these investigations to assist the NCAA, which is why they never turn over their information. They are doing the investigations to expose the NCAA. That is where the reader interest lies.

And I love what they're doing (just wish we'd gotten left out).

Yeah, the more I think about it, I don't see what the issue is, quite frankly. As far as the NCAA is concerned as least. The receipts could be made up, and the only way to verify them would be for Western Union to cooperate with an investigation. They won't; probably a violation of customer privacy since this is not an actual criminal offense. I don't see what they could possibly do here. In that regard, dismissing Couch would be a shame. The only rationale I could halfway buy into for dismissing him is if Butch uses it to set an example early in his tenure.

If I am CBJ this is very simple to handle. Consider the report as it was given about the players taking money. Sit down with Couch and ask him directly if he took it. If he did, he is gone. Simple as that. I don't care if the NCAA can prove it or if they even try to do so. The kid has known his entire career that you don't take money. It's pretty clear he did. Yes, he could lie and hope to hold on long enough to finish up at UT before anything was proven as it would take some time if anyone tries to prove it. The kid broke one of the easiest rules to avoid. Don't take $$. It's not hard to understand or to follow. What he did with the money means nothing. Accepting it should end his UT playing days.

Lol this is pretty funny right here. Saban's press conf from yesterday after the story broke. He gets pissed off at the reporters asking questions. It doesn't get good until about the 3:00+ mark. I don't know about y'all but I love watching him squirm.

Here's the link. Just as a warning, this is from Clay Travis' website. Just saying bc I know some can't stand him and would rather not visit his site.

I disagree 100%. If he took it, make him pay it back to some charity, own up to it and apologize for his mistake, suspend him for a couple games, then give him another chance. As far as we know, Mo does not have a history getting into trouble.

Not saying what he did is right by any means, but if his season is over, then that is a shame. Manziel gets suspended a half, Cam Newton gets a NC and Auburn gets a slap on the wrist, and Couch misses the last 10 games of his senior year for taking A LOT less? Now, if his season is over because Butch makes the call, not the NCAA, in order to make a statement to the team and future players, then I'm fine with that.

Preach.

Opens the door for more problems IMO. It more less tells kids to go ahead and take all the cash they like. IF..IF they end up getting caught, just repay it and we good. Maybe this time UT skates by and the NCAA does not hammer us again. What about next time? Make a very clear statement now it will not be tolerated. JMO

There's a cash limit applicable to a payback, as I understand. So a player wouldn't just be able to take all they want and get away with it if discovered; they wouldn't be able to possibly pay if they took loads and loads of money.

I think being humiliated and suspended for a few games will deter others from taking money as much as kicking him off the team would. Plus, players want to know a head coach has their back. Butch has created a family atmosphere and kicking Mo off the team for accepting $1350 seems to go against that. Disciplining him by making him repay the money, suspend him for a few games, and do some additional internal punishment would suffice. I'm glad my family didn't disown me when I had a few lapses in judgment during college.

Frankly, I don't care what he used the money for. He made a poor life decision, and he's utlimately going to hurt himself and this football team. UT's AD pays compliance officers to teach players about these situations and how to make the right decisions.

If he was having issues feeding his wife or daughter, that's a family and personal issue. IMHO, that's when you reach out to family and friends, not some NFL "concierge" or agent.

this is much easier for some people to do than others - not quite at the same level but this comment reminds me of when mitt romney said if a student couldnt get a loan they should just ask their parents for 30,000 - well &$% Mitt wouldnt that be nice but not everyone has those parents

it could very well be that Mo didnt have a lot of friends/family at that time who could give him the money for what he needed

or he could have bought a few jerseys and a new phone and a night out on the town - truth is we don't know but i wouldnt crucify the man as if my family really needed it and someone was willing to give it, and I had no other way to earn it i would take the money

fortunately i wasnt in those positions but we should assume we "know" his position inside and out and judge him too harshly

if he has the money to pay back now i would be happy to see him back after a couple game suspension he would likely get after - if not, hope he makes the league and wish him the best

exactly - this isnt exactly like Cam and a few hundred thousand - much different scale imo

Just wanted to add how crazy it is that saban didn't get the first question about the biggest game of the year in cfb vs A&M. I lol'd at the end where he got mad and said "thanks for your interest in the game" and stormed off. Funny stuff haha.
