Some more notes worth sharing from scrimmage ...

Justin Coleman was back from his breakfast banishment last night; indeed Coleman and Mike Williams started at corner for the first-team defense.

Williams apparenty had a monster hit. We've been telling you about him in War Room for some time, and I noted this week he has carved a starting spot on some special teams units.

Also am told Michael Palardy had a really good evening scrimmage, especially on field goals. Palardy didn't miss a kick.

Vols first defensive unit was solid and recorded a few three-and-outs early. But the reserves didn't fare as well and Riyahd Jones continues to be challenged by coaches. I think he worked with the 3s in both sessions.

Marlin Lane was a bit nicked up but it wasn't seen as serious.

No surprise on Dylan Wiesman losing his black stripe today. Everyone i talked to last night and today said he mauled people and has surged into that mix as the Vols' 7th OL. He worked at right guard, with Kerbyson at RT.

On Neal's run, it was well blocked but he did break a Brian Randolph tackle attempt.

Dobbs and Ferguson split the twos. Don't sleep on Ferguson in that battle for the two.

Jalen Reeves-Maybin continues to get his feet under him. He had a PBU in the end zone.

Marquez North, Pig Howard and Vincent Dallas opened at WR in the nightcap. Coaches continue to challenge Jason Croom to show more.

Haha. " I will not freebase cocaine during the sermon!!!...... Unless I've heard it before..." I was conflicted on whether it was terryp or tide, but it was an Alabama rehab vid so...

I agree. But our defensive players won't face a better OL than they do in practice everyday. They'll get better.

UTV02, serious question.

What point are you getting at with your "Our (UT's) defensive players won't face a better OL than they do in practice everyday" statement?

I'm not disagreeing with that statement at all. I would agree. But I'm curious how that relates to UT's defenders' tackling woes?

Thanks in advance.

In the spring Riyahd had all but locked up a starting CB spot. Now running with the 3's...ouch!

I think Butch is sending the message that you work everyday for your job. That wasn't the case with the previous staff, imo.

I guess it doesn't relate all that much, thanks for pointing that out, flowd82. :hi:

Said it before Croom is not an every down receiver. 3rd downs and red zone will be his specialty.

Been away for a while. What is the black stripe I keep seeing referenced? I assume you "lose it" for good play?

Freshmen have a black helmet stripe. It is removed when you are deemed worthy of having worked hard or played well...I think.

I guess this settles the debate on whether or not North's stripe had been taken off or not.

Butch Jones ‏@UTCoachJones:

2nd stripe of the night was Marquez North! #VFL.

I think Coach Jones is sending a message to Jones at CB. I also think Cam Sutton basically showed up, out played him, and then never looked back.

I believe Jones is still important to the secondary as all true freshmen CB have their growing pains, and I think if he has not handled the demotion well that running with the threes is a way to wake him up and make him fight back.

Coaching Motivation 101. My college coach did that all the time. Within a couple of practices people stepped their games up.
