2014 F Kevon Looney

Not to burst your bubble, but that's not true.

Tobias Harris 5*
Scotty Hopson 5*
Duke Crews 5*
Ramar Smith 5*
Renaldo Woolridge 4*
Cameron Tatum 4*
Wayne Chism 4*

And there's a bunch of 3*s and top 150 3s. So far, Pearl has done a way better job. I'd compare it to our commit list, but I think we all know Pearl wins.

(P.s. I'm a Martin fan)

And that's not including the ones that listed us but decided not to come here which the other poster was including.

Also add:

J Mcrae 4* top 50 player
T Golden 4* top 70 player
and two transfers

J Maymon 4* top 50 player
JP Prince 5* top 25 player

I think he was was talking about in a single class. I hope, it would be crazy to compare Martin 2 yrs to Pearl 6 yrs.

In the first three classes, including both coaches short time on the job Spring classes, Pearl signed Wayne Chism (4 star), Duke Crews (5), Ramar Smith (5), Cam Tatum (4 star), Scotty Hopson (5), Philip Jurik (4), Renaldo Woolridge (4) and got two transfers out of Tyler Smith (4) and J.P. Prince (5).

Just misses were DeJuan Blair (5), Elliott Williams (5) and J.J. Hickson (5).

Recruiting wasn't Pearl's problem.

CCM's first three classes will have Jarnell (5), Hubbs (5), Austin (4), Cofer and Cornish (borderline 3/4s).

Just misses include Austin Nichols (5) and Jaquan Lyle (5) with remaining shots at Leron Black (5) and Kevon Looney (5).

Counting "just misses"? Seriously? Well then, why not count the #1 recruit in the country Josh Selby. How bout adding Aaron Craft also. How can those two be left off the "just misses" list? Those two have got to be at the top of the list of 2 of the biggest "just misses" in UT basketball history.

I included the "just misses" because the context of the original statment was "UT's basketball has never been considered with this much talent, even during Pearl's days."

I didn't include Selby and Craft because the next commenter said it was unfair to compare Pearl's full six years to Cuonzo's first few. So I limited it to the first three classes for an apples to apples comparison.

And, as big as those "just misses" were, I think Blair was an even bigger one. He wanted to come here. His grandmother wanted him to stay home at Pitt. Put Blair on either the 2008 or 2009 teams they have Final Four talent. He was a monster at Pitt.

And, in the realm of Tennessee basketball history, they all were dwarfed by the "miss" of Spencer Haywood in 1968. He was signed and on campus for summer school before being declared ineligible (some say because of the behind the scenes work of Adolph Rupp). Haywood went on to lead the 1968 US Olympics team to a gold medal and averaged 32 points and 21 rebounds/game in his only college season at the University of Detroit. Went on to average 30 points and 19 rebounds as a rookie in the ABA the next season. Get him on campus as the trail-blazing first African American in Tennessee history, a guaranteed first team All-America and you likely cut KY off at the knees or at least put a serious dent in their dominance.

One recruit may have been the foundation of another successful program while the other was the wrecking ball that tore one down.

CCM has a long ways to go to sign 3 top 10 recruiting classes in 6 years. Although if Looney inks his name that would give him his first.

Probably doesn't get much better than the Earnie and Bernie show. That came just a half dozen years later and that did absolutely nothing in denting KY's dominance in NCAA basketball history.

True, but you have to take into account the context a bit. From a talent standpoint, Haywood would have dominated the SEC of the late 60s. He would have been a man among boys. Tennessee might well have attained a Final 4 40 years ago. A championship would have been a long-shot, with that being the middle of the UCLA run.

From a psychological/strategic standpoint, beating KY to the punch with the first great African American basketball star in the SEC would have given Tennessee a tremendous advantage in attracting similar talent.

And, in fact, your example of Ernie/Bernie is pretty good. Tennesee beat KY 5 of the 6 times Bernard played against them. Tennessee was lining up NY talent to follow them. Then... the combination of Stu Aberdeen leaving then passing away and Coach Mears having to retire because of illness at the age of 49 dissipated all the work he'd done leading up to that point. DeVoe came in and basically tossed away the Mears razzle dazzle in favor of turning Tennessee into a fundamental, Big 10 program (DeVoe was an Ohio State grad). While he had some good years on the front end, DeVoe couldn't sustain, mainly because he was an indifferent recruiter.

The transition from Pearl to Martin is eerily similar. Again, a show-time program turned into an experiment in transplanting Big 10 basketball to the SEC. The hope I have for it turning out better is that Martin seems to be much more engaged in recruiting than DeVoe ever was.

Interesting to hear some of the history of TN basketball. Thanks.

Okafor's AAU coach came out not too long ago and basically said Duke is the favorite. So that chance of them filling up is still possible. Right now I still think Duke then UT Michigan St and Wisconsin.

I looked into that the other day...they have 9 underclassmen on scholarship, so they can sign at least 4. They have SG Grayson Allen committed, you can go ahead and chalk up Tyus Jones & Jahlil Okafor, that leaves one spot. That's why Winslow being included in the package deal was huge, it was a wing similar to Looney, and would likely have Duke at their limit. However it no longer appears he's gonna follow Okafor and Jones, and I'm guessing that's because Duke wants a spot open for Looney.

Given that Hood and Parker are likely gone after this year as well, Duke isn't going to fill up. Unless Parker pulls a Marcus Smart they'll have 6 scholarships to offer

And, Coach K apparently loves Looney. Hard for me to believe they wouldn't find a way to get him in if he wanted to go there. But, Tennessee has beaten Duke for recruits before.

Hubbs is the only one I recall. I still remember Elliott Williams.

Good post Germ. Hang out more often.:good!:

You nailed it. For those of use who remember the last few Mears years we know he was building a monster with his pipeline to New York.

This has to be a UT/Duke battle with Duke out in front. He said that his parents will be a factor in his decision with the relationships they have with each coach. When we get him on an official visit, I think we'll have a better chance with him. Adding Looney would complete this 2014 class and I hope Martin can steal this one.

I believe Coach Martin fairs better in relationship building than a lot of other coaches. Could be a positive for us.

Looney has been the guy I've wanted to land more than anything. He is a potential one and done lottery pick...something we've never had!

With how young our post will be next year we could use his talent to kind of outweigh the youth, and give Cofer/Davis/ a year of experience before they log some serious minutes.

It'll be interesting to see the dates for visits Looney sets...Okafor and Jones are visiting Duke last and it'll be October 25th, so it'll likely be sometime after that when they announce for Duke. I don't think Looney wants to wait that long, but I don't know, that's why I'm interested to see the dates of his OVs.
