Carr could make a little noise as a true freshman this year. I know it is early, but he has the physique to be an All-American DT. I think Strip is going to have a blast coaching him.

Plus Croom being a RS FR and expecting great things from him this yr and throughout. We have some potential studs and gamechangers at WR if they all develope like we hope. Plus Pig, Blanc, Carter, Johnson, Young and Harris is another guy with great size that once the light comes on can do great things. We really do have a nice combo of big, physical receivers along with speedy slot type guys than can change field position quickly for us. We have a really good WR Coach and cant wait to watch the development as the yr goes on, hopefully sooner than later.

I'm excited about our WRs. I continue to believe the concerns from the spring were overblown and that these guys will do very well this year. I hope I'm right. When you just think about raw WR talent on campus and committed in the 2014 class, we are absolutely stacked.

I'm anxious to see how all these guys are used. I don't really have a vision yet for what CBJs offense does with the WRs and why it seems to be so demanding on them. Should be fun to watch, once they get it down.

If anyone on the team has the physique of an all-american on the DL its Smith but he's yet to pull it together, completely. I'm hoping he gets it this year bc man, we need him too. We haven't had a significant pass rush in far too long.

Saban has the edge at safety right now with Therezie, Eddie Williams, and Collins about to be in the line-up. JMO.

UF is up there with their CB's lately, but can they compete with LSU? Their entire secondary has been a machine for the past 4 years now, and now they have Ed Paris and John Battle committed already this year. That's the status I want UT to be at with the secondary.

Practice opened up with a bang as, shortly after stretching, Jones called out wide receiver*Cody Blanc*to go one-on-one with freshman cornerback*Malik Foreman. Foreman had good coverage on the goal-line play but Blanc caught the pass from quarterback*Riley Ferguson*for the touchdown.

Offensive administrative intern Derrick Lett is not a small human being. However, he took the brunt of several blocks from tight ends while holding down the blocking pad. A pair of tight ends took Lett off his feet. The players apologized but Lett was proud of them for finishing blocks.

The second-team offense had*Nathan Peterman*at quarterback,*Alden Hill*at running back with*Jacob Carter,*Vincent Dallas*and*Johnathon Johnson*at wide receiver; tight end*Alex Ellis; offensive line (left to right)*Marques Pair,*Marcus Jackson,*Mack Crowder,*Kyler Kerbyson*and*Jacob Gilliam.

For whatever reason, Dallas doesn't look like the player he did the last two seasons or so. As one of the few experienced pass catchers returning from the 2012 roster, it seemed obvious he would start this fall. However, he's been with the second unit since the spring and looked sloppy Saturday.

Jones continues to press special teams as much as possible on top of sprinting onto the football field and to drills. A pair of freshmen didn't sprint to punt coverage and head all about it from the head man on the Haslam microphone.

Friday it was JUCO tight end*Woody Quinn; Saturday it was freshman cornerback Malik Foreman who was the target of ultra-intense coaching. Foreman, a 5-foot-10, 177-pounder from Kingsport. heard his name over and over during some of Saturday's early work. Finally, Jones left his observation tower and hurried to the section of Haslam Field where Vol defensive backs were working so that Foreman could feel the heat of his glare. As noted yesterday in regards to Quinn, coaches save this level of intensity for players they're counting on. Secondary coach Willie Martinez also spent a considerable portion of drill work giving Foreman individual attention, underscoring the fact that the Vols are counting on the first-year player. Really, the Vols have no choice but to get Foreman and fellow rookie*Cameron Sutton*ready to play immediately.*Justin Coleman,*Nyshier Oliver*and juco transfer*Riyahd Jones*are the only scholarship corners who participated in spring practice.

Another cornerback who could help immediately is Maryland transfer*Michael Williams. Although he competed only in track at Maryland, the 5-foot-11, 171-pound redshirt freshman played football in high school and shows very little rust. He exhibited great quickness and surprisingly good hands in picking off a pass in a coverage drill. Fellow Vols say Williams looked exceptionally athletic in offseason workouts.

For what it's worth: The Vol assistant who was chided via microphone by Jones for being to lackadaisical in switching from one drill to a sudden-change drill during Friday's workout was sprinting from station to station between drills today. Lesson learned.

Last fall*A.J. Johnson*led Tennessee in tackles, helped on special teams and scored six touchdowns as a direct-snap tailback in short-yardage situations. Just when it appeared he could do no more to help the team, he expanded his repertoire during Saturday's practice. When student managers were rushing to move blocking pads from the field to the sidelines, Johnson grabbed one of the pads, trotted to the side of the practice field and deposited it himself. When a star player is humble enough to help student managers with cleanup duties, you know he hasn't let success go to his head.

Coaches were so upset with the pace at which first-team Vol defenders took the field for one drill that they sent the whole group back to the sideline and made them do it over. The Vols raced onto the field this time.

Redshirt freshman linebacker Kenny Bynum (6-feet-1, 247 pounds) looks like a future defensive end. Freshman safety Jalen Reeves-Maybin (6-1, 210) looks like a future linebacker.

Safety Brian Randolph, who missed all but three games of 2012 with an ACL tear, showed his old agility by leaping high to pull down a deep pass in a coverage drill. Randolph's absence was a key reason Tennessee's defense came unglued after Game 3 against Florida last fall.

Linebackers*Christian Harris*and*Justin King*were dressed but did not participate. Both did conditioning drills with a strength assistant coach either off to the side of the playing surface or in a netted off area marked as "The Hole."
