I finally just got to watch Butch's presser from yesterday. The guy impresses me more and more every time I hear him speak. I've said it before and will say it again, we got lucky when the other candidates turned us down and the job fell to him. I don't even wanna think about where we'd be right now with Gundy, Strong, or whoever bc it wouldn't be anywhere close to where we are with Butch. Not just in recruiting, either, I'm talking about in every phase of building a championship program.

I have to say, I dont think we could've gotten a better HC that truly understands so many different aspects to having a championship caliber football program. The guy is a machine and he really does "get it" when it comes to all those different aspects. To be one of the top programs in the nation takes a coach that is really good at so many other things outside of x's & o's and so far I think he's done extremely well with all of that.

I had my doubts when he was hired along with about 99% of the fan base but I'm now convinced that he'll not only bring UT back to the top but we're about to witness a special time in this storied program. The giant is definitely awakening and once we rise to the top we're gonna stay there for a long time as long as CBJ is in charge and, imo, he'll be here a long time.

I've been listening to and watching the Vols since Bowden Wyatt was head coach and there has been some very good coaches in that time period. I've not seen anyone that pushed the team and fan base and the former players like Butch has. What he is creating is unlike anything I've seen in about 55 years of following the Orange. I know he doesn't have the status of being a former Tennessee player but he is showing that it's not necessary (to be a former Vol player) to be a leader of the Vols. If we start winning like we did in our best days Butch will be raised to the pinnacle of Vol football lore. JMO

I have had some thoughts about CBJ pulling the "we're not as talented as the top programs" card yesterday. Its dangerous territory and as we know a pitfall DD fell deeply into. CBJ followed this up as a motivational foundation in indicating that it could be overcome with work, commitment and consistency. I was fairly impressed that he used the "meet the press" opportunity to continue the drum beat of his coaching message.

The other thing that has my attention is that the veterans on the team seem to be all in more than on a mere superficial level. The depth of his passion and preparation is fairly evident. DD did fairly well with regard to the character of the player he left. I am optimistic that we see a team that exceeds expectations this year and glad the pieces fell to leave Jones as our head coach.

CBJ is definitely good. I watched his presser last night as well. The thing that stuck out to me is that he didn't concede anything about expectations for this year's team. I may have been reading too much between the lines, but I came away thinking that CBJ genuinely expects this year's team to compete for (and hopefully win) the SEC championship. I didn't get a sense that he wanted the media and fans to believe this was year zero or a rebuilding effort. No watering bamboo. He expects his team to give maximum effort every day and win. Starting now.

Very impressive. For just a moment, it made me believe I should revisit my expectations of a 6-6 regular season...

I must have heard that differently than you. He was being honest about our talent level relative to our top tier opponents (and I don't think any serious person would disagree with his assessment). But he also didn't use it as an execuse. He followed it up by describing how his less talented Cincinatti teams overcame low expectations and won championships. I came away thinking that's really what he expects of this year's Tennessee team. I thought it was the polar opposite of Dooley.

The man just strikes me as an absolute winner. Can't wait for Aug 31.

You are right about how he used this to suggest the possibility of moving beyond expectations. He has been nothing but complimentary toward returning players and so that is why I found this striking. I suppose a coach feels an obligation in appearing to be realistic in addressing pre-season expectations. His comment about having to rely of freshman for depth was interesting in this vein too. My view is that he needs to move on from talent evaluations for the 2013 because at this point it is something absolutely beyond his control. His message doesn't need it.

we finally have a coach who has a vision for our program going forward that everyone, and most importantly the team can buy into. His steadfast determination and attitude as a positive leader is something the kids have taken hold of. This is going to give them the chance to overachieve relative to their talent level. Dooley was totally incapable of giving that vision to his teams. I think this is going to cause us to be the surprise team of the SEC this year. Barring major injuries, we are going to do more than anyone expects out of us. We will win our three cupcake games, the big achievement will be to beat either GA or SC, and then win the last 4. That gets us to 8-4 and then a win in the Chick Fil A bowl.

I am officially proclaiming my full-on MAN CRUSH on Butch Jones. I love this man. He does the right things. He says the right things. He recruits better than I could have imagined, and he does it all with an earnest respect and affection for this University and football program.

I love him. :cray:

"Are we going to be the most talented team this year? No, we're not but TALENT doesn't win championships, TEAMS win championships....
