^^ I think we could find some UH1s laying around for much cheaper.

Sounds like a payoff the Putin.

The Marines still have 107 Hueys in inventory. There are a lot of them around, and they are still in production, costing 4.7 million off the assembly line. The contract for the Mi-17s includes maintenance. Does that mean that Russia will send crews back into Afghanistan?

From what I've read in the past, those Russian copters are safer in the mountains of Afghanistan. In fact, I'm pretty sure the US has been using them there already.

Since when are we worried about safety? UH1 can fly pretty high.

Safety isn't the issue so much as ability to fly over the mountains. UH-1s can only get to about 60% of the country, Blackhawks around 80%, CH-53s and MI-17s, 95%. Maintenance wise, MI-17s are the better platform.

BTW, they were offered a fleet of UH-1s in 2004, not by SECDEF but by Congress.

So we're going to borrow $572,000,000 from China to buy helicopters from Russia to give to Afghsnistan. Makes sense.

Yes, I'm speculating that we are borrowing the money from China.
