IRS admits to targeting Conservative groups

Oops, closed door hearings are shedding light on whose idea this was:

Issa Says Washington Directed IRS Targeting Out of Cincinnati - ABC News

Wait. The first sentence attributed to him in the lead paragraph is that the Cinci officials "were 'being directly ordered from Washington.'"

Then in the second paragraph he says: "this is a problem that was coordinated in all likelihood right out of Washington headquarters."

So first it is that they were ordered. Then it is likely???

And then the next sentence is: "And we’re getting to proving it." Huh?

So first they definitely did it. Then it is that they likely did it. And then next is there is no proof of either?

To make matters more confusing, he says “The administration is still trying to say there’s a few rogue agents in Cincinnati, when in fact the indication is they were directly being ordered from Washington,” he said.

The indication? What indication?

This Issa/Rand Paul/GOP tactic of taking the fact of the screening process and then implying a grand conspiracy behind it -- with no evidence -- and then using words such as "likely" or "indications are" is just so played out at this point. And sadly, though not surprisingly, stupid folks on the far right are just eating it up.

Even though the GOPers are admitting they have NO evidence of it.

Of all the posters on here I would figure you would understand this type of logic the best...

Actually, there are documented letters with Lois Lerner's signature on them and some testimony already coming in so there is significant evidence that it was not directed out of Cincinati but rather came from IRS HQ - in (gasp) Washington DC.

Also curious why you don't apply the same scrutiny to David Plouffe's contention this weekend that it was just a couple rogue agents in Cincy when he knows that not to be the case.

Plouffe and Axelrod lie? Who knew?

I find it hard to believe that Carney is still saying it was a few rogue agents.

protest over a video.

I could never do a job like that where your only responsibility is to parrot the lines you're fed by other govt officials. He has to cringe every time he reads his notes for the day

Doesn't matter to me if this was a directive from the WH or rogue agents. I am hopeful this scandal will bring about radical change. Up until now, the IRS has been viewed as a necessary pain in the butt in which the pain was applied equally to all who filed.

For the first time, the IRS is seen as an entity which can be used to profile and punish a segment of society. This resonates especially with societal demographics who have a healthy fear of government and it also resonates with those who are in the minority (and are more easily targeted in a historical sense).

This can be a slam dunk issue for a savvy politician who can make a play on a populist issue. That person can reach a huge percentage of Americans with a message to reform the IRS and the code.

We had that in Herman Cain ...until axelwad and his goons concocted their shameless smear campaign.

They were terrified of Cain. He is the man I wanted for the job. Totally eliminates the race card. Would have shut them all up

Interesting. Cain was my guy as well. In fact, he is the only candidate I pledged money to and offered to volunteer for.

How can this be? Aren't we all horribly racist and only support people who look like us.

because I never really considered him to be a serious choice. To each their own I guess

I heard him on talk radio when I was in Atlanta on business. He was better off-the-cuff than with prepared speeches, IMO.
In retrospect, I think he was a serious candidate based on his leading the polls during part of the primaries.

I don't think that he's implying it started from Lois Lerner, do you?

He's saying it was directed from Washington IRS.

Transcripts of interviews with IRS employees are coming out and sworn testimony by employees fingers IRS HQ.

Issa: Cincinnati IRS employees say direction came from Washington – CNN Political Ticker - CNN.com Blogs

One of the employees hit back against accusations that lower-level employees were responsible for the scrutiny of conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status in 2010, telling congressional investigators that the Ohio employees were being “thrown underneath the bus.”

A second "more senior" Cincinnati IRS employee said they began seeking other jobs when they were assigned to look out for applications from tea party groups, because they felt it was inappropriate.

According to excerpts released to CNN by the oversight committee, one of the employees said their supervisor told them the direction to single out conservative groups came from the Washington headquarters in March 2010.

By April, seven hard-copy versions of applications had been sent to Washington, the employee said. In addition, the employee said Washington had requested part of an application by two specific groups, though the excerpts do not disclose the names of those two groups.

So as you can see Issa does have evidence it was beyond Cincinnati and had direction from Washington.
