They were better at receiver under Dooley. They had D-Moore, Stocker, G. Jones, D. Rogers, J. Hunter. Poole was highly driven but I don't know that there was much difference between him and Neal.

Defensively, you had a group that had confidence because they had had some success.

But the biggest difference is that in Dooley's first year he was playing with alot of NFL skill guys.

SIAP - But this is from Hubbs on the VQ message board, comparing the 2010 Vols to this year's squad. Rather sobering. Hubbs seems to think Dooley's first squad may have been a notch better overall than this year's team.

Personally, I still think our OL and DL are way better, but time will tell.

Doesn't matter what DD had. He could lose with the '85 Bears.

They were a lot better overall. Sad, but true.

The only standout difference is the OL. Otherwise, there really isn't a superior position on this squad than in 2010.

Not sure I agree with that, and I agree with you. Dooley's first team may have been the worst roster in my lifetime, and I am 33. Even having Moore, Rodgers, and Hunter, the two latter were true freshmen. The OL were all true freshmen. The defense was worse- we started Tyler Wolfe at safety against UAB! The only position that was really better was FS with Janzen.

This year, the OL is fantastic, and the defensive talent is much better, especially with the correct coaching. Sure, the WR are young, but once North and Jenkins make it in, there will be talent just like under Dooley.

The other standout difference is that the players of 2013 will be well-coached and disciplined...a huge,huge standout difference.

On WR performance:
"I don't have a leader now," a frustrated wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni said.


The hands team does have MarQuez North, Ryan Jenkins and Josh Smith coming on board this summer, but it's going to be very tough for them to crack the lineup quickly with so much to learn.


"God love 'em. They're all the same. They all think they're going to come in and hit the ground running," Azzanni said.

Redshirt sophomore center Mack Crowder has the boyish face of a 10-year-old but he's starting to "man up" for the Vols these days. When asked recently which of his backup linemen is making the most progress this spring, O-line coach Don Mahoney replied: "Mack Crowder. Mack Crowder had a heck of an offseason of lifting, training and so forth. Through this point of spring ball he has really stepped up his play. I'm really pleased with the progress he's making, the way he's attacking the days mentally, the way he's attacking practice physically."


Mahoney also mentioned Kyler Kerbyson, Marcus Jackson and Alex Bullard by name, adding: "There are some positives. We're moving in the right direction. We have just got to every day demand more and more. And you know what? The players are responding. That's the positive. It's a group that has responded to the challenges put before them and the demands put before them. That's encouraging."

Concerning RBs...consider that our fortunes seem to be swinging in the right direction finally. We have missed on several high profile RBs and the ones we have signed have not been anything above average. We are DUE for a RB to exceed expectations. With that said I submit that Jabo Lee will play a major role this fall behind our talented OL and become a consistent play maker.

A lot of NFL players ahead of Posey, makes sense we haven't heard much. He'll be just a RS Soph this fall. He has plenty of time to make noise and he'll get his opportunity in 2014.

I expect to hear that he's making progress as a player. Kerbyson is the same year and same position. Why are we hearing lots of positive information about him?

By all accounts from spring camp, nothing has been mentioned about Posey.

Mack is as well - yet it does seem to be crickets for Posey

It could be mental. It may take until fall or another year for schemes to click with him.

we had no OL, no DT, no QB with a start and Matt sims started half the year at QB, no pass rush, no cover corners - really just had no depth in the secondary at all that year

we did have Janzen Jackson, Gjones who was mediocre, Dmoore who was good, and stocker who was good

Gjones didnt get drafted - JJ wouldve had his head been on straight so that team had 3 legit NFL guys on the team that played key roles that were not freshmen

this year's team will have way more than 3 NFL guys playing key roles - the no QB, no corners, and no pass rush sound familiar to this year but having mutliple seniors who have starting experience at DT and all over the OL is not something that should be diminished - it is a HUGE difference from 2010
