Neither of the quarterbacks exactly lit things up at any point during the day, but neither threw an interception and both seemed to handle the demands of running the offense with minimal organizational issues. One thing that has to be taken into account when trying to assess what Peterman is getting done, and that is that the talent at the skill spots on the second unit is not close to being up to SEC standards.

On fourth-and-six late in the scrimmage and with quarterbacks live, Jordan Williams decked Peterman in the backfield for a 10-yard loss. Corey Miller also notched a sack of Worley on a third-down play.

Late in the scrimmage in an "overtime" setting, neither offensive unit could get a first down. Palardy closed the first one when he easily converted from 43 yards out. George Bullock hit a 37-yard field goal for the second-team offense.

Offense down three and second possession of overtime was the next scenario. Trying to convert a 40-yard field goal, Palardy pushed it left.

Peterman provided one of the offensive highlights of the day when he broke containment on first and goal from the two, bought some time and then side-armed a jump throw into a sliding Joe Ayers for an apparent touchdown. The play was called back due to having an ineligible receiver downfield, but Peterman hit walk-on Tyler Coombs on a slant for the score.

Jones isn't remotely shy about using the loudspeakers to make a point. His best one of the day came on the Vereen dismissal. Another notable moment came after Pig Howard nearly fumbled a kickoff return (the ground caused it) when Jones stated, 'Alton, we've got to take care of the football. 107,000 people just groaned.'

Not sure what to make of the scrimmage reports. Sounds like there were some good things, and some things to be concerned about. Now that we are entering the back half of Spring practice, I'm taking note of the continued concerns about the QBs and receivers. Still a lot of time for them to improve, though.

We have talented guys coming in summer and they have the whole summer to improve. It will take hard work just to get to adequate, but hopefully with the run game, adequate will be good enough.

Yeah, I agree. Sounds like it was a perfect moment for two reasons:

1) Showed Vereen's got fire in him
2) Allowed Butch to take control as a disciplinarian on the field; I like the fire too, but you can't act like that with your teammates.

You can do that at practice with your teammates. It'll happen again, just not in a game. Tempers flair in competition but on gameday you've got to be able to think under pressure. Which is what Butch was preaching today. Fights always happen at practice though.

The Vols took to Neyland Stadium Saturday morning for their second scrimmage of spring practice, which proved to be mainly situational. Butch Jones and his staff focused on a lot of overtime scenarios.

The usual suspects were non participants for Saturday's workout.*Jacob Carter,Jalen Reeves-Maybin,*Tom Smith,*Justin Meredith*and*Allan Carson*were all lead through various abdominal exercises and other work by linebacker*Curt Maggitt. Left tackle Tiny Richardson was fully dressed, but he did not participate.

Wide receiver*Vincent Dallas*was injured on a kickoff return drill. Butch Jones added after practice that it wasn't serious. He didn't return to action.

Freshman wideout*Paul Harris*came up limping after a hamstring injury on a deep pass route. he didn't return either.

Mack Crowder*was a great example of a player-led team Saturday. The No. 2 offensive line had a rough day, but Crowder was a leader after every series bringing his teammates together to correct mistakes.

Justin Worley*had a quarterback-keeper touchdown in an overtime period and running back*Marlin Lane*punched in a two-yard run for the game-tying two-point conversion in that particular situation.

Quarterback*Nathan Peterman*had a game-winning touchdown in overtime delivered to walk-on wide receiver Sam Cranford just inside the checkerboard.

Overall, the offense sputtered under both quarterback and running backs struggled to find holes most of the day.*Alden Hill*had a long run and tacked on a few more yards after a horse-collar penalty.

Freshman linebacker*Corey Vereen*had a sack in the scrimmage, but three plays later he was involved in a fight and thrown off the field. He returned later on in what Jones called a great coaching moment.

Defensive end*Corey Miller*had a nice sack coming off the edge against the No. 2 offensive line.

Jordan Williams*was able to record a sack on a fourth down that won the game in that particular situation. That also came against the No. 2 offensive line.

Geraldo Orta*had several bone-crushing hits for the No. 2 defense, including a jarring hit on running back Alden Hill on a screen pass that could be heard in various Knoxville suburbs.

"Our margin of error with this football team is very slim," Jones said. "You all see it. We all know. Let's not hide between it -- we know. We can be a good football team, but our margin of error is extremely small. It's limited.

This was the quote of the day for me. Seems to line up with the thoughts of some of us that this is probably a 6 win team.

Overall, sounds like the defense may be solid this year. I like what I'm reading about how they played today. Just further proof that Sal Sunseri was a uniquely bad coordinator.

Ouch. That doesent sound good. I think 6 wins is reasonable. I thought the talent level might be a bit better than that, but that quote doesent sound promising to me.

Got a different read...not enough mistakes will be tolerated for this to be a 6 win team
