Attorneys pressure uneducated citizens to plea all the time. Many because they are lazy and don't want to put in the work required. Those wrongfully convicted didn't have the opportunity or resources of a say, OJ Simpson? The lower classes get a lower quality of representation. Public defenders aren't out there busting their asses for the mike McNeil's of the world. And if he is convicted wrongfully it will be a shame and a repudiation of the American ideal. Lets not act like the justice system, and especially lawyers are the salt of the earth. It's a money racket more than anything else.

As I sit and read this at a saturday clinic where we provide free legal advice for indigent persons, for which I will not be paid, I have to disagree. I bust my ass for each person I represent, no matter how much they or the taxpayers pay me.

Go Vols.

I'm in that picture somewhere. Thanks for posting it! I went to the event today, and it was wonderful. It was a good way of facilitating good will between the academic and athletic sides. Butch definitely gets people, and I think he is going to succeed here. The man looks, talks, and most importantly, ACTS like a head football coach.

Oh, and I got to touch the "I will give my all for Tennessee Today" sign in the locker room. Cool!

is this the event i saw someone talking about where the players had to cook breakfast for their teachers?

If it was, I'm not aware of it. It appeared to be UT catering services putting the food out. That's all I know about the food. It was a hell of a spread though. We then got to tour the locker room and hear Butch and Coach Stripling speak. Finished off by having photo with team and watching today's scrimmage.

As a sidenote, number 6 (I think that's Vincent Dallas) got a little banged up, but walked off the field. He was down for a few minutes though. Hopefully he's okay.

it might not have even been football, i just saw a tweet where student athletes had to handwrite invites, take them to their instructors then prepare the breakfast. what was your impression of jones in person?

On offense, starters were: Justin Worley, Rajion Neal, Brendan Downs, Pig Howard, Cody Blanc, Jason Croom, and left to right on the offensive line, Alex Bullard, Marcus Jackson, James Stone, Zach Fulton and Ja'Wuan James.

Following some special teams work at the outset, during which Vincent Dallas was banged up on the opening kickoff coverage unit, the Vols' offense took over in a situational setting at midfield. Both the first- and second-team units failed to strike in their initial possessions, though the second grouping with Nathan Peterman at the helm picked up one first down to allow a field goal attempt that narrowly missed to the right from Michael Palardy with the Vols' second-team field goal unit.

On its second opportunity, the top offense with Justin Worley at quarterback marched efficiently downfield. Worley had a couple of key pass plays to Alton 'Pig' Howard, and Marlin Lane handed off to Devrin Young on a reverse that covered nearly 20 yards. Down at the 3, Lane cleaned up the drive and scored moments later.

The second-team offense then similarly got untracked, with Peterman hitting Drae Bowles on a screen pass that covered 30-35 yards down into the orange zone. Alden Hill rushed straight up the gut for a touchdown moments later.

Focusing then on punting, Palardy was extremely effective. Palardy's first three punts carried 50, 52 and 49 yards. Matt Darr continued to have an inconsistent spring.

Jones then placed both offensive units in a tough spot, backing them up to their 2-yard lines and saying the goal was simply to gain one first down. The first-team offense did just that, and Jones coached up the defense, noting "The first play is key, because it impacts what will be done on special teams. If you keep them at the 2 or 3, it changes their punt protections." The second-team offense was stymied.

Freshman defensive end Corey Vereen made some noise early on, showing a nice burst off the edge when and coming clean for a 'touch sack' of Justin Worley. Just a few plays later though Vereen drew some attention to himself in a negative light when he got into a post-play shoving match.

The situation didn't seem to be anything other than the kind scrum you normally see after a play, but Butch Jones used seized the episode and made it a teaching moment. He called for Vereen to be 'thrown out of the game' on his mic over the loudspeakers and further instructed that his helmet and pads be taken away.

Jacques Smith, who Steve Stripling called the Vols most consistent pass rusher earlier this week, showed up on Saturday with a sack and a pass deflection, both of which stopped drives.

A.J. Johnson showed up on several occasions, but none bigger than when he delivered a perfectly timed blow to Marlin Lane on third down that broke a pass and forced a change of possession.

I know you cannot look too much into Spring notes, but Butch Jones seems like ten times the coach that Dooley was on the field. I always thought Dooley was "average" as an administrator/recruiter, but he was awful on gameday. I think even though the talent level will go down some this year, the increase in coaching ability on gameday will somewhat make up for this, especially on defense.

Unfortunately, I didn't actually get to talk with him personally. A bit too many folks there (who also were talking to him), and I knew he was soon needing to get out on the field, so I didn't really want to bother him. However, his presentation was great. Every YouTube video you've seen of him with his players here and at Cincy is legit; he was the same way with us, although obviously he wasn't telling us to go out and knock somebody's head off. haha! The man just really seems to get people, to understand what they need from him, and to actually deliver it. He yielded questions and was so gracious in his answers. He appears to me to be a very smart man. He said he wants a team avg. GPA of 3.0. Going to be tough, but I hope he gets them there.

A funny note: He was talking about wanting his players not to sit in the back of their classes, then we were shown a video of Croom's daily activities as a student-athlete. Croom was sitting in the back of his class at one point. After the video, Butch stopped us all and said jokingly that he was going to have to speak to Croom about that and make sure he starts sitting up front again.

Quick update from the Rivals Birmingham camp

I've talked to a few of the guys here Tennessee is after and here are some updates:

Charles Mosley says Tennessee is closing in on Alabama as the Tide still lead. He said Todd Kelly Jr. calls him almost every day and he talks to coach Stripling a lot. He looks like a beast out here.

Dashaun Davis, linebacker from Alabama, really likes Tennessee and talks to coach Thigpen a lot. It seems like LSU and Tennessee are at the top, although he didn't have a set top group.

Kendrick Doss really likes Tennessee, will have a top three later on this year. Lots of talent down here and I'll keep the updates coming.

Rico McGraw really liked his visit to Tennessee a few weeks ago. Said the vibe is very different at Tennessee. Really likes everything going on there.

Indeed we do. This kid will be a playmaker sooner rather than later, IMO. Some kids have talent, some have heart. When one has both, it is rare and special to watch.

Yeah, I agree. Sounds like it was a perfect moment for two reasons:

1) Showed Vereen's got fire in him
2) Allowed Butch to take control as a disciplinarian on the field; I like the fire too, but you can't act like that with your teammates.
