It's been too long. I believe they would feel support and accepted. It would be a great moment in American sports.

Also, the irony of a slur being used in a thread titled about homosexual players when the biggest issue these men face is acceptance is noted.

Honestly, I think this would be smart. Come out unified and I think it would more accepted by the homophobic players and the public. JMO.

I think you are overly optimistic about how accepted they would be. Society is radically different than it was when I was a kid, but we're not all the way there yet. As the original title of this thread indicates.

Publicly? I think they'd be good to go, although the one sport where the fan has this "macho manliness" idea is football and that might be hard to overcome. I think their biggest problem would be in the locker room.

to quote the great Agent K, "A person is smart. People are dumb, people are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it."

And I'm talking about the public, as in nationally and from a media perspective. Obviously, from a message board world, it won't be so easy.

Are you saying that being gay makes you less of a man, or are you just saying that is the general stereotype and that they will be affected by it?

I think, honestly, they'd have a better shot for acceptance if they were MLB or NBA from a fan point. I think the NBA would be the least tolerant from a player perspective.

Football is an athlete's game. What an athlete does with his genitals is beside the point.

You would think by now you would understand the inevitability of all this. American society has decided that it's not going to ostracize homosexual people anymore. Eventually this will be true in pretty much every walk of life. You can either go live on a compound in Idaho or you can relax about it.

I think I'm going to edit the thread title again and cut out all the discussion about that so we can have the actual argument instead of bickering about the terminology. OP, please note that I've put your original title in your original post so nobody will think you didn't "call it like it is."

Not sure why we should care, but I agree with those who say that some people will.

Gay men have played this game since it's inception.

this. People don't like that gay men are coming out and play in the NFL, but it is likely (very much so imo), that if one is/has been a fan of the NFL or an NFL team, a starter on a fan's favorite team or one of the fan's favorite players could have been gay.

To get all upset about it is a waste of time
