"Saturday's challenge to the defense is two-fold, being in the proper run fits and tackle. All defensive coaches are still baffled by just how poor of a tackling team the defense is when it comes to fundamentals, such as proper angles and playing low."

- VQ

Bad coaching finally comes to light when good coaching takes place. How many times we had to witness this last year game after game. Getting rid of bad coaching habits a lot takes longer when you been taught the wrong way for the last three years. The good news is with the young kids from the past two year classes will have more time to learn the right way. Not saying the Seniors can't this year they just have a shorter time frame to develop good habits. JMO

It's only last year's bad coaching they're having to correct, although a third system is definitely a hindrance. Sirmon and Wilcox may not have had much to work with but they at the very least had an average SEC defense.

I don't know wtf the coaches were doing last year....but the fact that we're still paying some of them sickens me.

Thanks for this post. It reaffirms that this staff sees what all of us had to endure watching all last season. I can't imagine why Hart still wanted Dools to make it as HC as late as the USCe game. Thousands of fans that never played past HS observed this in every game. Reality bites when you are on the losing end.

Every fanbase not rooting for Alabubba complains about tackling...But, it seems we have been extraordinarily bad...for years.

To those posters still trashing Chaney - you are revealing your ignorance of the game.

Chaney delivered #18 in total offense with less than SEC quality running backs and having to come from behind all of the time when the SEC quality defenses knew what was coming. This isn't the 90's anymore. You can't just pound the rock and throw an occasional pass without having Bama type talent on offense and defense. And even they lost a game. Now Chaney will actually have a real running game at Arky to go with a passing scheme that is one of the very best in the game. Once they recruit the talent they need to run it we will be very happy they are in the west division.

I don't blame Chaney as much as I do Bray. IMO, the fact that the coaches did not pull him when he refused to check a ball down is all on them. Bray has 4-5 options on every pass play. The fact that he always decided to throw it deep VS looking for the 1st down play is my issue. An OL with 100+ starts, A QB with an NFL arm, and (2) 1st RD NFL WRs, will make any OC look good if he has the backbone to pull his QB or not. JMO

Seeing all the screens being run in the practices now is a welcome sight to me at least. Something we have been missing for a while now.

J.R Sandlin, who was over recruiting personnel and tactics, is no longer with the team per VQ.

They are supposedly going after a guy in the NFL to fill that void.

A poster asked how responsible Sandlin was for all the recruiting hot stuff.

He was not solely responsible for it and I wouldn't expect any change in how this program approaches or does recruiting business.

You guys are remembering it wrong. We ran screens. On third and short DY would come in for the first time all game and we would throw a screen to him for a loss of yards. More seriously, I would love to see Tiny on a full sprint knocking heads 15 yards downfield.

Yes, I think this team does appear to have better unity that it had at the end of last year. But this team a year ago got along pretty good. There were some ego's to manage and this team doesn't have some of those, but last year's team got along well. I think there is currently more cohesion with the team and the coaching staff. But again after the Florida game (really the Mississippi State game) things went south badly last fall.

Now the problem is that this team has alot of holes and not enough talent. Based on what I have seen thus far, if they were to win 6 to get to a bowl game then I would say that's a good year. This team going to a bowl if far from a given when you look at their talent level and the schedule.

-Hubbs

SIAP. I tend to agree, although I think 6 wins is more realistic than Hubbs apparently does. In the end, I will be surprised if it is above 6 wins. And I'll be pretty disappointed if it is below 6.

Is he the guy we got from Bama? His idea to send the 102 letters to Truitt, right? Seems like a weird situation.....

Offense was inconsistent. We would do very well one quarter, and then shut down and have 3 and outs the next quarter. Arkansas had Dennis Johnson as their main runningback when they went 11-2 in Petrino's final year. That was with a terrible OL and terrible rb. UT's offense was more talented at every single position except maybe quarterback. I think Chaney is a good OC with the right coaches around him, he didn't have the right coaches here and it showed.

Need another reason to like Tennessee's new coaching staff? How about this: After having to learn Harry Hiestand's terminology in 2010 and Sam Pittman's terminology in 2012, Vol offensive linemen figured they'd have to learn all new terminology with the arrival of Don Mahoney as O-line coach for 2013. Not so. Mahoney has memorized most of last season's run-game terminology, so his troops won't have to learn a third system in four years.

-Danny Parker

This is awesome. The staff does all the small things.

Thank you Lord for smart coaches. Big strong athletic O-line should be used like crazy for screens. Dummy Chaney hardly ever called them to back the fire blitz packages off from other teams.

I feel like every screen went to Devrin. Problem is, all the other teams knew this too and promptly shut it down.

Why would you take a plea if you're innocent. Taking a plea would mean he accepts some sort of responsibility for what took place. He is saying he did nothing wrong and had no idea about what was going to take place. If he believes in his own heart and mind that he did nothing wrong and was in the wrong place at the wrong time why not stand up and fight. This is his life we're talking about here. Who's to say that at the end of the day the prosecution doesn't have enough evidence to support the charges against him. That's why we go to trial. Just sayin.

Who is the best pass rusher through the Spring so far?

I don't know that anyone has been very good. Smith has had some moments and has been the best. Before everyone goes and labels other guys as bust and all that. The right tackle is pretty good and I think LaTroy Lewis missing basically two years of football has showed up some rust that he's knocking off. I think Lewis is going to be a good player, but he hasn't really played since his junior year of high school so there's been a big adjustment there.
