He absolutely looks faster now than he ever did in college. Must be the deer antler spray.

He completely remade himself - changed his diet, changed his workouts, trimmed up and did in fact get faster. i remember reading about it - there was an entire page on what all he did and the improvements that he was able to achieve. Makes for a great read. Maybe someone can find the link.

This.

You could see the God-given natural ability with the way he ran the ball at UT. You could also see, as did the pro scouts, that he was out of shape and did not carry the ball correctly. That relates to attitude - personal choices only he could make. Arian only has Arian to blame for not being drafted. The coaching staff back then could also take some blame for not getting through to him - that was their job to make happen. Maybe they tried hard and werejust ineffective doing it. To Arian's credit he used the adversity to remake himself.

A true football redemption story IMO.

You don't have to agree with everything ST18 says and people can have different opinions but i don't see why him saying a good coach would get this talent to 7-5 is crazy

we will be considerably more talented than 6 opponents - austin peay, WKU, SAlabama, MO, Vandy, UK

auburn went 0-8 in the SEC last year

7 wins is just not a Herculian feat

Agree.

It's important to remember that 2/3 of our HC, OC, and DC were the worst in the conference.

Joker Philips could have coached the 2012 Vols to 7-8 wins.

this is a VERY good read...what I like most is the personal approach Jones seems to take with the players...open door to his office for them to stop in for a chat...walking through the locker room after practice to just make sure everyone is OK on a personal level...to me, if you are going to work with teens and early 20s young men this seems like an obvious way to function...but apparently other guys prefer to keep their distance. To each his own, but I certainly like that Butch is taking somewhat of a father role with these young men.

No. That's not what I said. Not even close. He needs the 6 he should win then an upset. That's 7. He then needs to win a bowl. That's 8.

Why? I have explained that ad nauseum. If you don't think a 6 win season followed by what is likely to a worse '14 will have Jones on a hot seat in year 3 then you are simply deluding yourself.
If he is an above average coach then he can win games with this roster. If he's not then he is not the coach that UT needs.

I'm not saying he's a failure if he doesn't win in year one. I am saying that if he can't win with this roster then he will struggle with the next two... and that will get him fired.

Why do you automatically assume our record will be worse in 2014 than it will be this year?

I understand we are going to graduate a lot of good Olineman and some very average DLineman and LBers.

But we actually have solid depth at the Oline and we are going to bring in some solid JUCO's to help as well.

I could make just as much of an argument that 2014 will be better because we will have a more experienced QB (whoever wins the job this year), better more seasoned WR's, will be bringing in a gamechaning RB and all of our players will have a year in Jones' offensive and defensive systems.

It isn't all about roster talent...hell James Franklin won 9 games with Vandy's roster last year.

I think the main thing that worries people with our schedule is that we have @Oregon, @UF, UGA, SC and @ Bama all in our first 8 games with only 3 easy wins mixed in.

How healthy will we be, how mentally strong will we be if we are 3-5 when we get to the games that are actually the make or break games for our season? @Mizz, Aub, Vandy??

This is a heartening positive...I'll say energizing approach by our new coach...when I heard the name Butch Jones as a candidate early on after Gruden was deemed a pipe dream, I felt defeat, my hope was Charlie Strong would lead us back...Butch Jones is BETTER...WAY BETTER...get ready for great things...SOON

I read it too. It sounded exactly like articles about Lance Armstrong, Barry Bonds, Ray Lewis, Javy Lopez, on and on. Sorry - just don't buy it. I never saw a guy with the ability to be the best back in the NFL.

I agree. One of the best articles I've ever read from VQ. I'm fired up now after reading it. I almost ran through my wall a minute ago.

We really should be able to beat SC or UGA. It's time. We are due.

I felt the same way when Butch was announced...in part because I bought in to Grudenmania and in part because I didn't know anything about Butch other than we whipped his Cinci team. Time will tell but I think we dodged a bullet with Charlie Strong. I'm not saying he isn't a solid coach but there is a reason he has had such a slow climb up the coaching ranks...and don't say its because he is black...clearly something is missing with Strong that have caused other big-time programs to be reluctant to hire him...more and more I'm buying into Butch...I am remaining cautious in my optimism but his recent recruiting has upped my belief.

I agree...one of the best I've read in recent years...a lot of that has to do with CBJ being so open to the media.

EVERYONE in the nation would view it as a massive upset.

I am hopeful we can get one of them this year, especially SC since I live down here, but both of these teams will be top 10 preseason and we are expected to be 13th preseason in the SEC.

Yes, everyone would view it as an upset but we were close this year and they didn't run away from us the year before that...so basically two of their better teams in their history didn't run away from some of our worst teams...I would say it is a decent possibility we beat one of those two teams this year.

I'm with you and I think your points are accurate. Just as we can upset someone on our schedule, we can be upset ourselves. I won't be surprised to lose @Mizz or to Aub this year. (I refuse to believe we'll lose to Vandy or Kentucky).

All told, I still think 6-6 is reasonable and a good standard for Butch's first year.

(Secretly, I think he has the ability to exceed this standard, but I won't hold it against him if he doesn't, given the circumstances).

It is possible...having them at home certainly helps.

I like catching SC at home after our bye in the middle of a 3 game road stretch for them.

UGA loses their entire defense. If we can stop them at all I think we have a good shot at them. Especially at home. That team is consistently overrated.

We'll have a chance. That aggressive defense they run might be worn down by our tempo. I think that Georgia game is our best chance at an upset.

I still think expecting more that 6 wins is a little premature, though. If we get to a bowl Butch has done a fantastic job.
