You can sit there and smirk all you want because you know just like I do, the talent in FL, the appeal of UF and the success YOUR program has had will ALWAYS bring in talent.

UT has had bad decision after decision as a program, leaving us with where we are now.

If CBJ is going to do this thing, he is going to have to use whatever magic he has in his sleeve to pull off some mighty huge upsets given our talent gap compared to the SEC. I am optimistic we can win 6 games and pull a top 9 recruiting class.

CBJ is pulling in talent Dooley should have had there the last 3 years. Things are looking encouraging with this new recruiting class. I am utterly stunned we are in it with such top talent, but Freshmen rarely contribute Day 1.

Watch out with UT, because when this program brings in top talent, and starts winning again, it's not going to be a doorstep for these other programs, including UF.

Lets be real for a minute. The next two years we are probably a 6-8 win team until we get our talent level back.

If this happens, Jones is not the right coach to turn UT around. This would be an "average" result. An "average" coach will continue to produce "average" results.

Vandy, Mizzou, UK, and 3 OOC wins give him 6. I personally won't be "very happy" with that result AT ALL. That is a bar set too low. Basically that is saying he only has to beat the teams we KNOW he has a talent advantage over to make us happy.

Seriously. Don't be that guy. Scheme and coaching can make a difference, but if the talent is not there you won't win many ball games...

The talent is not up to par at UT right now.

Eric, I think I know you better than that from your posts here. Young talent is great... but not without wins. Do you think it is reasonable to expect more wins next year than this year? Remember, the Vols will replace the entire OL and defensive front 7 next fall.

This process is completely different than Dooley's.

You'd expect it to be. But it won't end any different if he doesn't make good on a team with 4 Sr OL's plus Tiny and 6 Sr DL/LB's plus AJ.

Butch has a winning history to fall back on and it looks like he may have elite recruiting to fall back on as well.

Yes and no.

He is doing very well recruiting helped by the legacy players this year. The finish to the '13 class was not "elite". I'm not saying it means he cannot recruit at a high level only that he didn't this past class. He was not an elite recruiter at Cincy... which should have no more trouble getting players than L'ville.

I like the guy and want him to succeed. But the jury is WAY out on whether he's an elite recruiter or not... winning 8 or 9 games this fall though would make things much easier.

Now on the coaching part, I agree completely. He has a 6 years history of doing more with less. He takes average talent and beats more talented teams. If he does this at UT... then he definitely wins more than 6 games in '13.

UT has better than average talent on the OL. Unless the recruiting services just pulled off an amazing feat by underrating pretty much every UT DB and DL... UT has better than average talent there too. All of those groups return with experience and some "scars".

Also I bet Butch won't have rotating staffs every offseason.

Probably not but we will have to see. Again, winning cures those ills too.

UT has the deepest and should be the most talented OL in the SEC coming back. Four Srs and a Jr who likely leaves early will start. All 4 of those Srs stand a great chance of being drafted next year.

I am not hung up on recruit ratings when it comes to particular players. But generally speaking they are accurate enough to say that if you have 8 DB's rated 4* by someone... you are not lacking talent. If you have three of your top 4 DT's who were 4* then you aren't short on talent there either.


The short answer is that Jones inherits enough talent to win 8 or 9 games including a bowl if he's an above average coach. If he's not above average then he's just warming a chair.

i am certainly not ready to throw in the towel on 2014 as well - we don't know how many OL we will lose at this point after 2013 - if we do lose all 5 starters we will have some guys with several years in the program who can step in unlike what happened under dools where we started 4 frosh OL - a system and a coach can win you a lot of games and we do still have a lot of guys on our roster who were highly recruited

we have as good an OL as you will find in the country and could start a 4star kid at every position on defense - i know stars don't mean everything but a lot of other big time schools were recruiting all these players - i just think a really good coach will be able to find enough on this roster to compete

i think all of us tend to under-believe b/c we just went through dooley - but typically the really good coaching hires make an impact in year 1 or 2 - i am hopeful that CBJ will be one of these hires

Not just Dooley. Kiffin made lots of noise but didn't really beat anyone he wasn't supposed to beat. Fulmer was in death throes the last few seasons also. It has been frustrating to be a Vol fan for at least 7 years now.

No experience at qb, no experience at wr, no depth at lb, average rbs, average dbs, and a below average kicking game. No way we are an 9 win team.

And our DL is average at best. Really RB/OL are our only solid ones, and even RB is just barely. DB is well below average.
