If you take spring practice reports as gospel, you're in for rude awakenings. Spring practice reports are always hyped-up, especially by the recruiting sites. It generates interest. I think it's great, but people need to step back to reality.

Our LB group is not good outside of AJ, IMO. If we want to start holding UT to a higher standard, then pretending as if Fugate, Harris, Sapp, and Propst are all of a sudden going to ge tthe job done at a high SEC level needs to stop.

completely agree - except maybe on AJ - he did not play well at all last year - was he the best of a horrid bunch, yes - does that mean he is a great SEC LB - not even close imo

check out AJ vs GA - 09/29/2012 Tennessee vs Georgia Football Highlights - YouTube

.27 mark - he is right in the hole - allows himself to get chopped, gives up TD run

1:00 mark - reads play wrong - doesnt get off block/run fast enough to make up for it and get to runner - huge play

1:50 mark - doesnt play with enough depth - gives easy throw to Murray to TE for TD

2:20 mark - cant get off block to get to hole, gives up huge TD run

people keep acting like he is a great LB - i just did not see a great LB last year - and don't blame it all on Sal - pretty sure he didnt tell AJ to get stuck on blocks and not tackle the RB

Nashville, Tenn., native and senior defensive back Eric Gordon was in the building this morning, but he was not in pads. In a Orange & White letterman jacket Gordon observed practice from various spots around the Neyland Thompson Sports Complex. Head coach Butch Jones cited off-field issues for Gordon's absence from the field Tuesday.

Joining tight end Justin Meredith in a yellow non-particpant jersey Thursday was a familiar face in redshirt sophomore running back Tom Smith. Smith, like Meredith, has been hindered by injury most of his Tennessee career. Saftey Tino Thomas and defensive lineman Maurice Couch continue to be in green non-contact jerseys.

Former Tennessee wide receiver and projected second-round pick Justin Hunter was in attendance for Thursday's workout after working out for NFL scouts Wednesday on Pro Day.

Athletics Director Dave Hart stopped by for a few minutes to get a look at his new coaching staff.

Freshman wide receiver Paul Harris must have done something wrong. The early enrollee was sporting a new number Thursday morning. After wearing No. 1 through five spring practices, Harris was wearing No. 91.

Junior tailback Marlin Lane stuck out in a big way in pass blocking drills Thursday stonewalling everyone that stepped up to the line. However, redshirt freshman Alden Hill was the complete opposite. Hill struggled mightily rep after rep.

Offensive tackle Tiny Richardson took snaps during non-contact drills, but was pulled in favor of Marquis Pair during team run. The remaining line consisted of Marcus Jackson, James Stone, Zach Fulton and Ja'Wuan James.

Devrin Young, Cody Blanc and Jacob Carter continue to take reps with the first team

Sophomore defensive back Daniel Gray was back in action today after being seen in a walking boot on Tuesday. Jones told the media Gray was held out of Tuesday's work due to an asthma attack.

Junior linebacker A.J. Johnson continues to excel in tackling drills. However, when he called out running back Rajion Neal, the junior was able to juke Johnson to pick up the necessary 10 yards to win the rep.

Your starting defensive line looks to be pretty set with Marlon Walls, Daniel Hood, Daniel McCullers and Jacques Smith.

In the defensive backfield, Riyahd Jones has joined Justin Coleman at corner on a consistent basis with Byron Moore and LaDarrell McNeil on the back end.
