U cant have it both ways. When Art Evans started at Cb everyone b*tched and moaned for change even tho he had speed to burn.

Now we're crying bc the cbs who replaced him were slow.

When the speed was there, VN cried. When the speed was removed and more technique guys were inserted, VN cries some more

This place is a walking contradiction.

Because it's just tooooo much to ask for that our corners have good speed AND decent technique. Has to be one or the other?

I can't speak for everyone else but I'm not complaining that slow guys replaced fast guys...I'm not complaining that Teague played over Evans...It is just eye opening to see the proof (not speculation but proof) that we had slow corners...that we didn't have anyone on the roster better than them....for those of us who wanted to say last years Defensive woes were all coaching...well those 40 times prove that though the coaching was bad...the talent maybe wasn't much better.

Talent wasn't great but it was the same talent Wilcox coached to a decent defense. Ocean of difference between mediocre talent being coached up to play above their heads and what Sal did last year.

No. you dont get the point.

when we had a speed guy who was RAW, people wanted him gone.

when we put in the guys with lesser speed but better skill and football IQ, people wanted them gone.

it's easy to drive from the back seat.

and btw the pass rush was MUCH worse than the coverage.

and that was the difference.

No Chris Walkers and No Malik jacksons.

This.

It doesn't matter how good your DBs are. If you can't get pressure on the QB, eventually someone will get open. We have got to get someone who can rush the passer or our defense will struggle.

First off, what are supposed to do on a message board? Of course we're back seat driving. That's all we can do.

Secondly, is it too much to ask as a major D1 school to have corners that cover whether they be slow or fast? My point about them running 4.7 40's is that Sal ran man when the our CB's couldn't run with their TE's. I don't doubt they'd do ok if in a cover 2 all day.

Finally, I'll take the fast guys and pray that we have the coaching that can teach technique. You can't teach speed.

u wanted change, u got it. now yall are mad that the guys didnt have speed. WE KNEW THIS. Everyone knew Pre and Teague werent explosive.
after decisions that you guys wanted the coaches to make were made and ended up not working; to then complain about them after the fact is the ultimate backseat driver/hindsight 20/20 move.

and playing CornerBack isnt about just turning and sprinting.

Its why a guy like Prentiss wagner actually wasnt that bad at CB. he played keys, read route combos and made plays on the ball

IMO Prentiss will make a good NFL FS if he gets a chance...

Tyler Bray everyone...

Tyler Bray on probably having to be a backup at first in NFL: "Well, they'd be paying to do it, so ... yeah, that's fine."

Probably a lot of ways to answer that question, not sure I would have picked that one personally, but to each his own I guess.

Lol. Dude still has a lot of growing up to do. Talent without discipline is worthless. Hope he can learn some humility and some discipline.

I just want coaches to put players in a position to succeed. If they're not as fleet of foot, then give them help. If they can run with a gazelle, get creative.

Can you at least admit that Teague had no business consistently playing man up coverage?

It works both ways. A good pass rush can be disruptive, minimizing (DB) exposure subsequently a good secondary can force pressure and/or coverage sack by the front seven. They compliment one another.

I agree that it works both ways, but not evenly. It takes a special secondary to consistently force coverage sacks, but only an above average pass rush to make an below average secondary look god.

Ill take a great DLine and average Secondary 10 times out of 10 over a great secondary and average DLine...

Have you ever seen a 7 on 7 secondary shut out an offense? Extremely rare...

Point I was trying to make, thanks for wording it better than I did

You're exactly right...both compliment each other. The spread up-tempo offenses of today are designed to negate the pass rush by spreading defenses out by making it more horizontal than vertical. Thus, making speed in the secondary paramount, imo.

What's wrong with having both?

Good, accurate post.

Waggs had good intuition. He read body language. The poor guy spent half his time at UT out of position at safety and as a result had too many injuries to overcome. Teague was never more than a potential starting slot receiver. That's it. When he went to D he was done as far as being a contributing player.

I feel sorry for the guys that played at UT over the past 5 seasons. They did not get coached to UT standards. Some of the best ones overcame it. The rest got an education in and out of the classroom.
