Here's a curious question: does Bloomberg know that guns are used nearly 25 times more often for self defense than they are for crime?

Seriously, the ratio for self-defense uses versus criminal uses is about 25 to 1, yet Bloomberg and his ilk seem determined to spend all their energy taking away the guns of the 25 defenders rather than punishing the one offender to the full extent of the law.

For those of you interested in the raw numbers, the figures of between 2 million and 2.5 million uses of guns for self-defense annually can be found in studies and reports by John Lott, Gun Owners of America, and the National Rifle Association. These are countered by the use of guns for criminal purposes at a rate of 100,000 to 135,000 times a year.

I don't believe those figures for a second.

They must have a very skewed definition of "used for self defense". Flashing a gun in self defense? Shooting a gun in self defense? Shooting and hitting a criminal in self defense? Shooting and killing a criminal in self defense? Or is that simply the number of known guns not used in a known crime?

No way that is accurate. NRA study? And tobacco industry studies show no ill effects either. Go figure.

To dove tail from another thread, if more law abiding citizens owning guns is the answer to personal security, and more people own guns today than 50 years ago and are even allowed to obtain a permit to carry it on them at all times, then why is there a perception that the world is more dangerous today?

Folks in power are trying to take away that right.

That wasn't what I asked.

Although I did chuckle when the article said it was a "God given" right. I know a group of men wrote a couple sentences in a document granting a privilege to the citizens of a newly formed country, but I never realized it was in the Bible too.

These NRA "studies" are universally mocked, and rightfully so. Their methodology is laughable. Literally.

Don't you dare question the notion of divine inalienable rights!

John Lott is a friggin' hack. I've spent the last three months reviewing much of his work over the last couple decades, I have yet to read one thing of his that doesn't use about the sketchiest methodology available.

Interesting that he links to the GOA Website and and NRA YouTube video, but not to the actually study that he is apparently referring to. No name of the study in the "article", either.

So, I tracked down the study on the GOA website...and, these "conclusions" come from a total of 19 respondents, which represented 0.8% of all the respondents (2,375). Very tough to make generalizations to a population of over 300 million from the responses of 19 persons.

maybe it is 24 out of 25 guns purchased are purchased for self defense rather than for the purpose of committing a crime.

Might be helpful if you would expand on the "laughable" methodology instead of just making grandiose claims and shrugging it off.

But the same could be said about the gun control crowd. Things like "a gun is more likely to be taken away from you and used against you." Or when people like to point to England and say "gun control works!" while hiding and ignoring the fact they have a higher violent crime rate than the US. See Piers Morgan's interview with Larry Pratt for further explanation...if you can't win with facts or ignore facts when presented to you, just call your guest "stupid" like a childish 7 year old and change the subject.

I won't do your research for you on this since you'll just ignore it anyway, just like the remainder of your liberal friends. Why waste time since you have formatted your hatred for the Second Amendment years ago?

If you are going to talk failed gun control projects, I would bring up Australia.
