if there was a funeral/burial, the dove may have gotten seperated from the ones they release at graveside services. If you wanted to, you might could call a couple local funeral homes and get the names of who they rent their doves from and call around to see if theyre missing one. I know its a lot of aggravation though

I am confused. So they release rental birds at funerals? How do they retrieve the rental doves once released?

I think they plan on them coming back somehow.

Anyway, I put the cage outside today with open doors. He took off. I made a couple of calls to vets and bird stores this morning and they were no help.

Well trained doves. At least he/she had a good home for the nite.

its my understanding they are trained like homing pigeons. when released at graveside they make 3 or 4 wide circles then fly back to where they are kept at. I am surprised you havent seen or heard more about it, its become the "thing" to do at funerals around here

Never heard of it. I have heard of birds be released, but not trained to return. Crazy.
