Am I missing something?

All I know is...

I am flat out ticked that Ole freaking Miss and Vandy....VANDY...are out recruiting us. I live in Bizzaaro World.
I hope this is a one year anomaly or we land a few on signing day that at least get us in the 20's. We could seriously be staring at complete irrrelevance for the foreseeable future.

We are only out recruiting Mizzou (barely), Arky and Kentucky.
Next year I would not be surprised is KY fared better that we do. The bleeding continues...

Let's see here......

-former head coach doesn't know (excrement) from shine-ola about coaching football?? CHECK.
-former head coach hires a DC that doesn't know (excrement) from shine-ola about coaching a defense?? CHECK
-former head coach all but quits recruiting with six months to go?? CHECK
-back to back losing seasons?? CHECK.
-the (widely rumored) commitments of C. Lawson and V. Bell automatically jumps us in front of the teams you mentioned?? CHECK.

I think you get the picture. I wish some of you would forget your login information for about a year, that way we ain't gotta put up with your nonsense until there's a basis of work to judge it from.

In other words: calm the hell down and quit overreacting.

I don't often respond to the posts of slow people, so count yourself lucky. I really like how you just happen to KNOW all these things....can I borrow your crystal ball sometime, so that I too can see into the future?? I'm just gonna go ahead and shoot your argument all to hell, you ready?? Mmkay, here goes.

1: "ahh does the truth about our football program hurt you this bad?"

Your version of the "truth", and that of others is laughably dissimilar. However, you keep on with your doom and gloom if that's what works for you. Been there, done that, gonna try and see the positives now.

2: "We are stinking it up in recruiting"

Where?? Let's see......(arguably) the #1 RB in the nation had us at #2 on his list.....we stand a very good chance of landing the #1 DE in the nation (Lawson), I forget what Levenberry's ranking is as a LB, but we're certainly in the running for him as well, among others (Jaylen Miller, Vonn Bell....IIRC, the #1 safety in this class, etc, etc, etc). All this with a coaching change, new staff, and all the changes. Contrary to your belief, you can't hold a gun to a 17 year old's head and MAKE him play for Tennessee if he doesn't want to.

3: "we blowed the coaching hire, and the best staff in the nation is laughable! Just look back a year from now and don't forget how Hart refused to hire a coaching search firm and panicked when he hired Jones. Jones says the right things, but his staff is full of no namers who can't compete in recruiting with other SEC schools it's being proven every day so far!"

Lemme guess.....you wanted that sack of fail Jon Gruden, didn'tcha?? Words cannot describe how glad I am that that POS isn't anywhere near Neyland Stadium. But, in the interest of fairness.....how did the coaching search get blown?? How do you know that they can't compete with the others?? Christ amighty, man.....how long have they been on the job now?? You're one of those types that likes start and park NASCAR racing, ain'tcha?? Pretty much the same thing you're saying here.

4: "No I don't do Meth, but I'm not a panzie like you . I'm not afraid to say what I feel unlike some of you who think a football message board is about popularity"

(chuckle) Maybe the meth comment was out of line....nah, it wasn't. I'm tired of playing nice around here. You're right on one point, this ain't a popularity contest. I'd be willing to bet there's 100+ people on here that have me on ignore over the Gruden fiasco (the fact that his name was even mentioned for the job still makes me want to projectile vomit). Simple rules for dealing with me......try to spell correctly, and if you're going to bash the coaches/players, have facts to back them up. Don't use emotion because your sistermomma or your aunt/girlfriend didn't give you no cuddle time last night. That's the kind of garbage that's far too prevalent around here, people letting emotion (and bovine excrement) rule what they say. Think about things for 30 seconds before you type them. And as for me being a pansy: drink bleach and have sex with a woodchipper.

5: "Answer Me this would you as a high school player rather have Mahoney or Pittman ? It's stupid hires like this that keep setting Tennessee back! Line of scrimmage wins in the SEC!"

How the hell would I know?? I've never met either of them, I don't pay a hell of a lot of attention to footwork and technique of the OL, and I'd be willing to bet that you don't/haven't either. Truthfully, if I was a beast OL in HS (and if I didn't bleed Orange), I'd CERTAINLY want to talk to Wisconsin's or Nebraska's OL coach. They always have a good OL, and I'd be also be willing to bet that there's a few more Nebraska/Wisconsin O-linemen in the NFL that what you'd think. However, you know it's stupid, so I guess Mahoney should be fired right now, huh??
You are a freaking Idiot! You never answered one question all you did with your high and mighty ass is ramble on about how right you are and how wrong the world Is! ..Close only counts in horse shoes, Who mentioned Gruden? , Who mentioned a Gun? Who the hell was talking about Wisconsin or Nebraska ? You need to lay your mirror Down sunshine and stop being so damned stupid to football! I hope you have wet dreams tonight about Gruden and wake up with a sore ass! God only knows with a mouth like that it's probably already sore! Just a little over a month ago you was singing to us about how great Jim Tressel was and now I bet you will deny wanting him! P.S. you Panzie!!

First off, teams in weaker conferences can recruit poorly and still WIN. They have little competition, but when placed against an SEC team, they are annihilated. The talent differential between the SEC and everyone else is DEFENSIVE LINEMAN . These big hosses are very hard to find and come mostly from FLA,GA,AL,MS and especially LA. We had an awesome Dline from 97-01. Look at the player3s we had. So there are 6 teams that get the big,bad Dlineman at this point:Fla,Bama, lsu,SoCar,UGAand AU. These are all located close to the recruit`s homes. we used to be THE PROGRAM IN THE SEC. now we`re another mediocre team. If we can`t do whatever it takes to get some big D-lineman,we are in for a long rebuilding process. If we can create some excitement somehow, they will come. Look at SoCar. and Bama for that matter. They created excitement by hiring NC winning coaches. I hope Butch utilizes every possible tool to create excitement this year or we may be going through another cycle of suck. Go Vols!

Finally some insightful analysis in this thread. In 45 years of following the Big Orange, I witnessed some superb defenses in the Dickey and early Battle years, ones that established NCAA records for interceptions and turnover margin which stand to this day, but their greatness was predicated on outstanding linebackers and defensive backs, not a dominant defensive front. In fact, between 1965 and 1972, we had 6 linebackers and 4 DBs who were All-Americans (see UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics - Football). As you can see, there really was a time when we were Linebacker U.

During much of the Majors era, including the Sugar Bowl champions of 1985, we had to manufacture serviceable defensive tackles out of players who did not possess the physical tools to truly excel at that position. The only time that we have truly stockpiled talent in the defensive line was the Fulmer era. Defensive end has not been as problematic, from a recruiting standpoint, as defensive tackle, simply because the rush end position does not require the same mass and strength as interior tackles must possess.

Perhaps my memory is deficient in this respect, but the only homegrown defensive tackles from Tennessee, since 1950, that would truly qualify as difference making, elite players at that position, who actually signed with Tennessee, are Doug Atkins, Reggie White and John Henderson. For empirical data on just how Tennessee fares in producing defensive tackles vis-a-vis other SEC states, see posts 29 and 30 of this thread http://www.volnation.com/forum/tennessee-vols-football/187674-recruiting-sec-orange-2.html. These data clearly illustrate why we have finished as bridesmaids so many times in competing for top-notch defensive tackles.

Reading comprehension isn't your strong suit, is it?? Hard to understand what I'm saying with your obvious third-grade education, so I'mma break it down "Barney-style" for ya.

1: The "gun" comment: You cannot MAKE a 17 year old play football for a University that the 17 year old doesn't want to go to. It seems that this is what you are wanting, the coaches to MAKE kids commit to them.

2: The "Gru-bage" comment: With all the hate you have for Butch Jones and the rest of the coaching staff, it leads me to believe you were on the "Hire that POS" bandwagon. If you were, so be it. For the record, yes, I wanted Jim Tressel. However, he didn't get hired, Butch Jones did, and I'll support the hire until I'm proven wrong (exactly what happened with Dooley).

3: Wisconsin/Nebraska: You asked who I would rather play for. I told you that I don't follow their body of work (OL technique, etc), but if I didn't bleed Orange, and if I were a 17 year old lineman looking for a school, I'd be interested in NEB/WIS due to them always having a beastly OL. Try reading sometime, please.

Final thoughts:

-FJG.
-You really need to get your GED or something, this whole ignorance thing is annoying as hell.
-Second time you've called me a pansy. Escalation of force dictates that I now tell you to auto-fornicate (Google that if you don't know it) with a chainsaw dipped in herpes.

I will calm down when I get my team back. Until them I am going to act like a fan and wonder why my team can't compete with Ole Miss and Vandy. The point of this board is to discuss things like this, no?

Did you miss the part where we have fewer recruits than they do, and are in on bigger and better recruits than they are??

Ya know what, I could have done this the easy way. Here's my response to your original premise of "Am I missing something?"

"Yeah, the patience to wait one more week before freaking out like Chicken (fornicating) Little because ERMAGHERD, WE IZ GITTIN BEET BAH O MISS AND VANDEH!!!! TEH SKY IZ FALLIN!!! WE IZ GUNNA SUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!! FAR BOOSH JONZE!!!!"

Dude, this is a DISCUSSION board. I am discussing our current recruiting situation. If we get 3 more guys and we out recruit the legendary Ole Miss Rebels my tune will change. I know that bammer isn't a dynasty right now due to being out recruited by . . .hah . . Vandy. This is no slight at Jones, he is here to clean up the mess made by Doofus. He is doing a fine job but we simply have to get some difference makers or we will continue to be hoping for bowl games.

By the way, just checked Rivals. We are now # 45. Out recruited by the likes of the pedophiles from PA.

This looks like it is going from bad to worse.

Vanderbilt went to a bowl game and won by 2 touchdowns. Ole Miss went to a bowl game and completely dominated the whole game. We went 5-7 and everyone is confused as to why we're not getting the recruits they are? Recruits want to go where a coach has proven that they can win and be competitive period! It's not Coach Jones fault that the last staff completely dropped the ball. Now he has to repair all the damage that was done and restore our competitiveness and you all think that 1 1/2 months on the job with no games to show what he can do is enough time to bring in top notch recruits? Come on guys be realistic!!! He may pull a few rabbits this recruiting class but other than that recruits are going to want to see what he can do on game day and after this up coming season if he can prove he can win then he will get top notch recruits and put us back on the map. I'm sorry but only 1 1/2 months to recruit players others have been working on for a year sometimes 2 years isn't going to happen especially when your working with a losing program of 3 years!!! I love my vols and yes I believe we should be out recruiting the other schools and competing with the top notch programs, but I also know it won't happen this year because Coach Jones hasn't had any time at all to build anything. Everyone knows that in this day of age it's what have you done for me lately and show me. 3 straight losing seasons and not being able to show what kind of team he can field here is what's working against him!! I like the energy and the passion from the coaches but they need at least a season to show what they can do so these recruits feel comfortable coming here. Now quit whining and complaining, be realistic, and realize that the fact the whole staff has gotten a lot of interest from recruits that the last staff never got which shows there is hope!!! And no it's no moral victory it's proof that this staff is dedicated to trying to get this program back to where it should be and all vol fans should be happy that we finally have a staff this dedicated!! GO BIG ORANGE!!!!

your wasting your breath with this ass clown bro.. he thinks we are in perfect shape and gona land all these studs...(don't tell him being in on and signing is two different things)

Currently this looks very, very bad. 45th. I can't believe more good players would rather play for a university that just got rocked by the biggest scandal in the history of college football. I thought we already hit rock bottom. Unless Jones can find a way to win 6 games next year...

I guess I need to try and get back into the NFL.

Ole Miss had one good year and now they have the number 11 class. How do you explain PSU doing better than we are? I have not read any explanantion that makes sense. I don't expect to have the number 1 class but I do expect to have a class that is consistent with a down but still storied program in the SEC. Even a class in the 20's would suffice but 45th? WTF?

I don't know what is going on. I hope things change between now and 2/6.

Penn St. still had a winning season... Now name me one just one program that has had 3 straight losing seasons that has a better recruiting class.. Go ahead i'll wait it will take you a while to look it up... Nm I won't wait its absolutely ZERO.. Theres not even a team with 2 straight losing seasons ahead of us! Is 45th where id like to see us at? Hell No!! But I also know how to be realistic and 3 straight losing seasons isn't going to make any recruit jump for joy at signing!!
