Unless they are mostly high 3 star and 4/5 star quality.

I believe we can sign up to 27 players this year. However, with the late start due to the coaching change, I feel like it would be smarter to sign 23-24 this year and leave those extra spots open until next year when Butch will be in a much stronger position with the 4 and 5 star players.

I don't like the idea of filling out the class with a bunch of unranked 2 and 3 star guys, if that's what it comes down to.

As a bonus, we can reward some walk-on guys with 1 year rides this year by setting some scholarships back.

It doesn't really work like that anymore. You'd have to make sure that all the "extra" guys you want to sign next year are all going to enroll early, or they can't backcount toward this year's class.

I believe the coaches will manage this. They know the rules, the needs and available prospects better than us armchair QBs. However, you are completely entitled to your opinion. You're welcome.

What a terrible idea. After the 2012 class has fallen apart, you want a weak 2013 class?

Who do you expect to be leading this team in 3-4 years? This is the Lane Kiffin debacle all over again.

With the attrition of the last 4 classes we cannot afford to not have bodies. Depth is absoultely critical. I agree with you to an extent but our last class only has 15 or so left. OUR LAST CLASS already has close to a 50% fallout. That does include NFL declarations but its a scary number. Not to mention Kiffins completed busted class and the 5 or 6 that have left every year since Dooley took over. Butch needs a full class if he can get enough players he thinks fit.

Just realized i combined the now sophomore class and the now seniors. But my point being we already lost bonner, taylor, phillips, bourque, etc. and thats big loss from the last signing class. Not to mention we still lack a full senior class for the 4th year in a row it seems.

K. I'll play. Why, may I ask, is this the Lane Kiffin debacle all over again?

The OP does not have a bad point. I am sure the coaches will look at it as well. If they can sign 27 that they feel we need then I think they will do it.

Because the attrition of Kiffin's signing class left Tennessee with one of the youngest teams in the country. Dooley wasn't a great coach, but his issues were compounded by the fact that he had one of the least expierences rosters in the conference.

We can't afford to hold off one players in the hopes of more quality guys next year. We need consistentcy and expierence, even if that consistency isn't as talented we might be able to land next year.

Besides what's already been mentioned, you can't forget that many a scholarship could open up due to arrests, drug abuse etc...

Take em all and do it again next year.

To be clear, I would like to see him sign 27. But I am setting the bar lower than that.

They were well experienced losers by the time Dooley left. That builds character and shower discipline.

If we keep making all these great suggestions and Butch reads them and does them, we will really never learn if he can coach without our help. I'd hate to think we had to pay so much for a coach that all he had to do is listen to us. Make him work for his pay.
