'13 GA DE Carl Lawson (Auburn commit)

Alpharetta, Georgia defensive end Carl Lawson is one of the hotter names on the recruiting trail. The peach state product has been and is still committed to Auburn, but that hasn't prevented visits. After going to Clemson last weekend, he was in Knoxville to see the Vols this weekend.

"It was a great visit," Lawson said. "I learned how great their fans are and how big the city is. They have so much tradition there and a great history. You can just see it everywhere you look. It's a valuable program."

Like most weekends, prospects were tweeting and instagramming their pictures out from the Tennessee locker room. Lawson and several others were sporting their jerseys that Tennessee uses in it's presentation to what could be each prospects football future. It's actually the past that stood out to Lawson.

"I love all of their former players," Lawson said. "Sure I know who Reggie White is, but they have such a great history here. You can see it."

Lawson spent time with Tennessee head coach Butch Jones and the top Vol made it clear that Lawson is very important to his inaugural recruiting class.

"I get a good feeling with coach Jones," Lawson said. "He's a really good guy and he's won everywhere he's been. He's a cool guy and I feel like he relates well to the players."

Also on the visit was his friend and former teammate Ryan Jenkins. Already committed to Tennessee, Jenkins has let it be known that he wants Lawson in orange and white, but doesn't pressure him.

"He's always cool when we hang out," Lawson said. "It does help that he's committed to there, but I have to make the decision that is best for me. He's always just my friend and he doesn't pressure me."

Lawson was hosted by Tennessee offensive tackle Antonio "Tiny" Richardson. He spent time with a lot of the players and coaches, but Richardson made an impression.

"He told me how everything is there," Lawson said. "He's a cool dude and a person I like because he is focused on his craft."

Rivals.com rates Lawson as a 5-star defensive end in the class of 2013.

I guess Saban gets his own set if rules cuz he visited bell at school and at home. Sounds like either unfair playing field or vq crew is misunderstanding the rule. In home should be what it is an in home visit. NCAA pisses me off with their stupid rules

Gotta love Tiny....that dude is going to be an all-timer by the time his career here is over.

I hate to be internet tough guy, but the writing over at VolQuest is horrendous. That article wouldn't have sufficed for an entry level journalism course. They're solid investigators, though.

Sounds promising! Fans shoutout was a nice touch. Maybe its his name on the rock he's referring to? Lol

You're not going to get any commitments from big name recruits if they aren't OVing to your school. Its definitely something to be excited about to get such big names on campus. Especially with how little time he has been here.

This is true but we have had big time recruits take officials the last few years. Our track record under Dooley was that the big time recruit would spurn us when we were getting excited like this. I understand bUTch and Co. are not Dools and I am cautiously optimistic that the new staff can get it done. However, I am not going to drink the cool aid just yet for my own sanity.

It must have been a great visit he is usually more reserved in his comments

One of the things that impresses me most about Carl, regardless of which school he chooses, is that he's not let this recruiting cycle go to his head. Usually, a top-10 ranking is a recipe for an a$$hole on the recruiting trail.

From the VQ Jenkins article on Lawson:

"Jenkins also stayed in close proximity to another official visitor, five-star defensive lineman Carl Lawson. The two are former high school teammates and have maintained a close relationship.

"It went good. Me and Carl, you know, we go way back. I went two years of high school with him. I was with Carl pretty much the whole time, just in his ear and letting him know he needs to come to UT," Jenkins said. "He liked it, and Carl, again, he knows what he wants in a school. I feel like he liked Tennessee, so we'll see what happens.""

If you do both in the same day it's legal.

I have said this before, but I was on VQ for 10 years. Brent is not a true journalist. He is a radio guy who happens to own a website. Just look for the info, not how it is presented. JMO.

I don't feel good about this one. Wasn't it said this won't go to signing day? I feel like we needed to close this out this weekend. The fact that he's still committed to auburn and is visiting there next just really worries me. Hopefully it's nothing...

True. One of my buddies -- who actually failed out of UT in his freshman year -- is the beat writer over at Florida's Rivals site. A big part of his job is punching up info from radio guys that makes it presentable for print.

If anything we've learned out of Carl is that he's a very introspective person, and this is simply par for the course. I feel he'll be a Vol, and while it's not guaranteed, I think the the momentum is on our side.

I think it is relatively rare for the announcement on the commitment to come out on the actual visit - it feels like a lot of times it happens a day or 2 after the visit - hopefully we hear something good this week

He'll probably want to talk to his parents and other family about it first. Don't blame him for that.

In recruiting, my hope is that we are in the top 2 or 3 with as many prolific recruits as we can be. Then, if we land a handful of those guys, it will be a success. Despite the coaching change, we're clearly in it for Lawson, Green, North, Gibson, Boyd, Levenberry, Morris, Bellamy, Bell, Bryant, and Grace. If we get 2 or 3 of these guys and hold on to the current commitments, I will be satisfied for this year. Next year's class with CBJ will be stout. Remember, we've missed bowl games 3 out of the last 5 years.
